SGOTM 12 - One Short Straw

While I await further advice I fill you in on other developments

We are De Gaulle worst enemy
Gandhi started Iron working after finiishing Theology :)
switched to Christianity as expected
T104 Gandhi popped a GS

N work boat discovered clams near a small island

S work boat exploring a large land mass near copper/iron planned site, so far has found sheep on that island.

Edit: gobble gobble

Yeah, forget diplo demerits. Not like we're getting Mao to Friendly in this game.
I'm confused now. You CF-ed and now have more worker-steal opportunities? Go for it, as long as you can keep chariots in a pair.
Edit: x-edit. :D

upload the save 200 BC (no lucrative gold trades so far :( ) took 1 more turn in real game to get MC than test game

spy is in Gandhi city you can look at the espionage modifiers.

I sorta blew it. When I got a ceasefire with De Gaulle the last time, getting the 3rd worker, the chariots got teleported to our lands (sorry)

Gandhi bulbed Philosophy

De Gaulle built Buddhist holy city

De Gaulle had 4 archers and 1 axe in his new city (so maybe recalling the troops wasn't all bad)

more detailed report soon

Good job, bcool! Those three workers will come in handy.

There were a lot of attitude changes. Did you happen to catch the corresponding change in value? LC may need them to determine/verify hidden modifiers. At last he seemed to be keeping track.

Edit: it looks like you ran 100% science. The difference in science is likely due to the extra commerce from trade routes in the test game, not lack of gold trades.

Looks great.

Just a few quick comments, gotta run:

We can probably get peace with Stalin now for MC.

All the islands make me think we really need a settler pump. Fish would be ideal, but it will be tied up for a while now with Colossus. Marble kinda sucks. Pigs is busy with GP, as is St. Pete most likely. I'd love to relieve Moscow, but not sure how. The banana site has two 5fpt tiles, 2 hills and ivory. Could be a decent pump, but it would take quite some time to get going. :dunno:

I'd trade Calendar to Gandhi, rather than Currency or MC.

Could you update the test game, bcool?

Updated test game

Realized I didn't move a worker to board the galley on time

I did only minor map changes to reflect what we see of De Gaulle's lands.

@bcool

I thought that worker was going to finish his road before boarding so that future workers/settlers could move quicker...

How many more turns are you going to play?

I noticed that we're approaching our health limit. Have we considered building another work boat to net the clams since our two current wbs are exploring?

One of the workboats in on its way back, ~8 turns away from the clams.

We will have a few turns of exceeding our health limit.

There was to be a 2nd worker who would use the road the next turn (the turn it is completed) then the worker who finished the road would board the next turn at the beginning. The galley would move and the worker who boarded first would get off. Sadly now both worker will board 2 turns from now and the worker will not have movement to off board. It pushes LC's settlement of the island plan back 1 turn.

I'm not sure how many turns I should play, De Gaulle is a serious threat I think and I'm not sure if Machinery next might not the be the best play. I wanted to stop here and discuss a bit more. We have less gold in the real game than in the test game too, so we are going to run into gold limits very soon.

I haven't had any significant gold trades (got 30gold from Rosey for Priesthood) but that was it.

Edit: I could play until the completion of the forge/market in Moscow.
That sounds ok, but let's make some decisions first.

We already see 10-11 more city sites, and there should be a few more in the islands. Getting all of this, while also getting a few wonders, killing at least DG, building Oxford and rushing to Liberalism is a tall order. We need to set a longer term priority list, I think.

Right now I see the lack of secondary production as the main problem. We're behind in getting 6 cities ready for Education, and the Moscow build queue is really stretched. I think a market would pay off huge, as would a forge, but we also just need settlers/workers and units.

The corn/clam/copper island site is pretty awesome. It can't usefully contribute to any war effort or worker demands on the mainland, but it could certainly build a University, and possibly spam some of the galleys and further settlers for the east islands.

Bananas is a pretty decent shorter term production site, as well.

Wonders: We're decided on Colossus and TGL already, so I think we should beeline those in Fish and Pigs. I'm not super convinced that skipping MoM is a good decision (along with TGL that was the wonder I initially really wanted), but given the current constraints, it's probably for the best. Engineer wonders - I still think the jury's out on Corporations in this game, though it is looking more promising every TS. We won't get a 100% GE shot here, or anything even close. I prefer just popping some mongrels throughout and hoping to get one. Ducks did that last game and it worked, whereas we overspent on GE and failed. In other words, it's a crapshoot either way, so we may as well not overcommit. IW also gives a decent late shot at one, if we plan for it carefully. Anyway, I'm not sure that GE points alone justify a wonder build. Mids and HG are great with stone, HS maybe a bit less so (as bcool's analysis yesterday showed). :dunno:

Diplo:
  • I think we should take peace with Stalin asap. The cost of DoP will keep increasing, so there's not much point waiting, IMHO. BTW, I kinda expect him to be on an island in the east. We might actually meet him sooner rather than later.
  • I'd love to sign OB with Roos, and the cost of that will keep increasing, as well. No one said anything about tech gifting to him yesterday. What are your thoughts?
  • I'd like to hold back Currency from Gandhi. Let's trade crap like Aesthetics, Calendar...
  • Need a spy in France asap to watch the troop situation.

Another issue that we need to discuss is trading for open borders with Rosey. I think it might make sense to get fair trade bonuses for Rosey at the same time we trade for Iron Working, Polytheism, Masonry from Gandhi

edit: x-post

@bbp why do you want to hold back currency from Gandhi? He might build up more gold to trade if he has it...

If we want to steal Philosophy we might have to leave the spy in Gandhi's city. I don't know if we want to build another spy. I suspect we will get to see the military situation for De Gaulle soon when he declares on us.

'Cause we're boosting him too much, IMHO. I don't want him gunning for Lib by 500 AD. Maybe I'm wrong on this point, but I saw him get Paper way too early in the test game.

Yes, I meant we might wanna build another. I don't really wanna wait 'till he starts moving his troops, though. His SOD won't be that far from Pigs, so we're better off prepping a bit in advance, I think.

No one is WHEOOHRN at the moment, so we should have some time before anyone attacks, right?
