SGOTM 13 - Veteran

We better build them while we can, then. We only have saltpeter for nine more turns or until Osman signs Cathy to an ma.

Surely we can do better than 23 turns for sanitation. Revealing bits of black on the map each turn should get us enough gold to run some deficit research. I think we could really use a monopoly tech. Units have priority over banks/universities imo as we need more territory badly.

First part of my turnset done...

Here is what happened:

990 AD - Start building 2 Privateers. Egy & Port sign embargo. Otto & Zulu sign MA vs us. Otto signs embargo vs us with Inca and Babylon.
We lost Gems traded for wines from Persia). Zulu and Persians+Babylon sign a MA vs us.
As we gave 28 GPT to the Zulu, that was not the worse to happen...
Vikings are building ToE.

1000 AD -
Buy Dyes( he adds WM+4g) for Wines from WIlliam.
Increase research rate to 80%. We get Sanitation in 14 turns.
Switch some more builds to privateers.
Otto signs embargo vs us with America & Carthage.
Vikings+Celts & Persia sign embargo.
Vikings & Zulu sign embargo.
WLTSD in Nago.

Continuing tomorrow.

1010 AD -
Sell WM to Carthage (15g), Egypt (6g), Germany (14g), Maya (6g+TM), Celts(1g), Russia (2g) & America (2g+TM)
Mongols have a spare source of coal...but a trade embargo vs us.

IT - FRA & BYZ, SC & POR, EGY & OTTO, KOR & ZULU, SCA & IND sign embargo. Otto & France, IND & CHI sign alliance.
A stack of American boats arrives a few tiles NE of Osaka.
We gave 146 gpt to France (10 turns were to go) and Iron to China...
1020 AD - Set research to 100% (Sanitation in 10 turns, still +11 gpt)

IT - CEL & BYZ, CEL & OTTO sign trade embargo.

American units move away.

IT - Spanish bombardment hurts us. Spanish & Maya, EGY & FRA sign embargo
America declared war on us, without alliance and bombarded our first Privateer.
PER & EGY sign alliance (costs us 29 gpt)
Ragnar builds an embassy.

1040 AD - Now more are at war with us than at peace (15 vs 11).
Next one might try to sell WM again.
So far, we didn't receive much damage, quite the opposite as we saved a lot of money...

Next player might have a chance to get Sanitation!

Uh oh, it's not my turn to get pummelled by the Spanish is it? :scared: I need to get GOTM77 finished (well, the tussle at the top of the GPR is getting hotter...) so I won't get to play the SG until Monday night - if someone wants to take it tonight or tomorrow, just post a got it.

Okay, got my courage up. Got my laptop working. Got my nigerian export Guinness (I wouldn't normally drink while playing an SG, but this game requires special measures). Got It.

Slow going of course... interturns tend to take so long that I fall asleep while waiting. But we are about to get that Sanitation monopoly. :bounce:

A little monopoly goes a long way!
I have uploaded at 1110 ad because we have a fairly important research decision, as well as new options about what to build. In short, there is plenty to think about. The main news is that we have traded through half the industrial era, and now only the Celts and Ottomans are ahead of us in tech (if you ignore Fascism). We are also at peace with everybody except Portugal (I'm still hoping we can attack Henry) and 5 civs who won't yet talk to us: America (natch, they are bothering us with bombards), Scandinavia (they have a caravel combo somewhere in the fog to the NE of Kappa, which is pretty dangerous), Russia, Maya, Egypt (they have a galley combo just E of Kappa).

Here is the turnlog (lots of map trading :cringe: ), but I will also try to post some actual analysis this evening...
Spoiler 1040ad to 1110ad :

So the basic tech decision that we need to make now is to research Combustion (not known to anyone), Atomic (known to 2 civs), or Ironclads (not known to anyone). We don't have oil or rubber of course, and there are still lots of embargos in effect, so we haven't been able to secure coal either.

The diplo / trading situation...

Okay, what else needs saying?

Privateers
We have about 5 of them (one American), but they haven't seen much action, and they look like they may be a bit of a liability  The trouble is, they haven't had their movement points doubled for the differential movement, although they do seem to ignore the movement cost for sea tiles. So when leaving port, they are going to get 3 moves at best (city > coast > sea > coast/sea/ocean). Port-to-port hopping is only possible when the towns are two tiles apart, and with only 1 DEF, the privateer stuck out in the open is a sitting duck for any frigate to come speeding out of the fog. Furthermore, if we put privateers in port (and we do have one wounded at the moment) then we risk the pirate-hunting bug whereby one of our friends sends a frigate to bombard the privateer, and thereby starts a war with us. So... do we want to keep trying to build more, and what do we do with the ones we have? They do at least have the advantage that we can use them against any AI ships, even those of our friends. There are two main threats right now; large numbers of American frigates to our south, and a Viking combo somewhere in the northeast, that may be carrying a berserk. The privateer stack is better positioned to head northeast I think, so I would suggest heading in that direction. Also, we should be able to get peace with America pretty soon now.

Portugal
Are we still going to try taking that island from them? Our military buildup is going pretty slowly. I have been concentrating on samurai, even though cavs are available, and we now have about 3 of them. Scary huh? We still have a golden age owed to us of course. Henry doesn't yet have ocean travel, but he can "see" both Magnetism and Navigation.

Workers
Keep them coming. We still need more population to max out our towns, and more workers to keep going on the clean-up, to blockade the islands if we decide to send our military to Portugal, and to be ready to build rails in case we can trade for coal. So both our granary towns (Osaka and Nara) need to keep building workers as fast as possible. In Osaka's case, that means downsizing to pop 6.

Cities
As Edo is our capital, we may as well aim to bring it to size 12 (needs another 2 pop). This then leaves the other cities in the north to all max out at size 11 (no more pop for Sapporo, 1 more in Satsuma and Nagasaki, 2 more in Nagoya). Nara will still make pop 12 eventually, but is currently pumping workers, hence the pop 6. In the south, Matsuyama, Yokohama can take another 4 citizens between them. This then leaves Kagoshima and Toyama to take another 2 citizens (as Ise can only now expand at the expense of less corrupt towns).
We now have Electricity of course, so we could use irrigation to grow faster, or to increase our total population at the expense of shields. Do we want to do that?

Research
Combustion will take 20 turns, but I wouldn't expect it to be a monopoly by then - at least the Celts and possibly the Ottomans have Electronics already, so they have only Ironclads and Combustion as current research options.
Ironclads will take only 13 turns, and is a possible monopoly, as the AI shuns it about as much as the human player. Of course it is pretty useless, and even if we do get a monopoly on it, it won't trade for much as it is so cheap, and we are no longer trading in a market where the techs we want to buy are widely known.
Atomic is very expensive (24 turns) and already known, so it doesn't seem like a very interesting choice. It seems to me that we should either go for Combustion or Ironclads, or just stack up cash - but that runs the risk of someone extorting it from us. And I think we can safely say that we not in a position to refuse the demands of anyone except the Inca, Aztecs and Mayans.

The CIA
We can build it, although given our shortage of shields, I would probably hope to do it with a leader. As I mentioned before, I don't really know much about the tech-stealing strategy. Maybe CIA is actually the single most important thing we can build right now? :dunno:

Tough choices...but first of all I am really impressed that we were able to catch up even without that GLib thing...

I'd say let's research for Combustion, I guess we will be able to get something useful out of it. And we don't want Ironclads to be around...although we might want to have some.

The summary is we've gained combustion, fascism, and ironclads and are 15 turns from mass production at 100% science with only a single clown in Edo. Four civs have atomic theory and/or electronics ahead of us. We have completed our markets and are currently making units everywhere. We only have four luxes as the Dutch can no longer trade dyes and we no longer have saltpeter. We can trade with only 4 civs as embargoes continue to tie us up. We are at war only with the Maya, Russia, and Portugal. We have 3 guerillas, 3 samurai, 3 cavalry, 7 artillery and 3 galleons and can start to think of going offensive against Henry. We are weak versus everyone but the Byzantines.

No deals have been done yet in the save, but many are possible. William will give 74 gpt + WM for refining; Isabella has 176 gold and a WM for refining; Caesar has 151 gold + WM for steel; Gigamesh has 1 gpt + 14 gold + WM for scientific method; Theo has 15 gpt + 10 gold + WM for steel; Abu has 199 gold + WM for steel. Good luck to the next player.:)

Those embargos are killing us - it sounds like getting the resources to build SS parts might be quite a headache. And there's not really much we can do to end them, I don't think. Once the AI has got into the swing of making embargos, they tend to just self-perpetuate for the rest of the game. :( Buying or selling any resource wherever possible might be a defense, as the AI should give a "will never" response to any offer of embargo which would cut an active trade. Resource trades also have the benefit that we are so small that we can sell any resource for more than we would buy back in for.
Production: perhaps we can build a factory in Edo? It won't be very impressive without rails or any kind of power plant to back it up, but we will need some kind of production base to be able to build SS parts. We could then re-micro the towns to give Edo all the best land tiles, to make the most efficient use of the scrap of territory that we own.

I agree. The wars haven't really hurt us. We got out of some big gpt payments and have caught up in tech. The embargoes really hurt, though. I think when the time comes some aggressive settling in the war-ravaged territories might get the resources we need. Also, Henry has a source of rubber which is one of the three necessary to build parts. The backward ai on tundra islands may also have extra sources of aluminum or uranium.

I think Edo, at least could use a factory for military production and parts. Also, engineers may be key as they also help to speed up the building of parts. Building the Intelligence Agency at some point may be a good idea as well. It is a scrap of territory we have, isn't it? I don't think I've ever played a game on a map this huge.

Any ideas if anyone else is playing a turn-set or when?

hello, team members, since last two months I come to a campus,
many happened in my real-life , mmm... and many happened in China.
Now I still stay in the compus and this should last until Oct. or Nov.
I am very regret to miss this good game and a good teamwork.
I am sorry that I cancel my activity during sgotm twice(including last sgotm), a childish behaivor, sigh.
and
Best wish to you all.

@soc: we've got the same number of posts! Well, not any more...

Anyway, I think we are past the point of worrying about turn order. Anybody that wants to pick up the save, just go for it. I planned to play some turns a couple of days ago, but got sidetracked into writing a spoiler for the COTM. I will try to get some turns played this weekend if no one else has it at that point.
