SGOTM 14 - Elite

910 Capture Satsuma without damage. Bring some units in to protect.
Germans have rifles. :(
36% land and 43% population.

IT
920 Knock down a pile of Japanese in front of Satsuma. Knock out 4 rifles and leaves Hamburg with a cav protecting. We didn't have enough but should get it next.

IT
930 Take Hamburg and Osaka with reasonably little damage.

IT Leo's flips.
940 Get back Leo's. Move on the Japanese capital. Abandon Satsuma and establish a new city. Heal in Hamburg.
Have to declare on the Arabs since they took out a Ottoman pike and there's only a spear left.
IT Greeks land on one of the islands.
950 Take care of the Greeks. Land next to Berlin. Take Kyoto, Edo and Tokyo. On to the Greeks since we can get there in two because of the oceans.

960 Take Franfurt and abandon the city when our settler arrives. Move towards the Greeks.
We're at 38% land and 46% population.

The computer blew out on me before I saved this so here's a summary of the next 7 turns.
The Germans have been difficult with their rifles and reinforcing has been a pain. The Greeks are done and we've made peace with them. We're now taking on the Egyptians since they'll lead to the most land. Here's how it works out...

We're at 43% land and 53% population.
Egypt has 3.8% but unfortunately I forgot to gift a city. :(
Sumerians are to their south and have 3.9%.
Hittites are south of them and have 5.2%

Mayans are south of the Germans and have 3.7%
The Chinese are to their south and have 6.1%

Incans have 3.7% and Mongols still have 1.5%. That should about do it with expansion from some temples too.
1030 Take down Leipzig with great cannon support. Wait a turn so I can plant another city in their territory.
Take Memphis with good arty support but we're not ready for Pi Ram yet.

1040 Set up a city on the German island and make peace. Take out Pi Ram and Helipolis. Once we take the capital we'll make peace with them and move to the next target which is Sumeria.

1050 Prepare to take Alexandria and settle some town on the island.

Summary We're at 45% land and 54% population.
Started ships south towards Sumeria after we take Alexandria.
I would settle a city inside the Greek borders before you make peace.

I'm trying to muster something for the Mayans and have an army ready for a landing.
The units on the German island can start to be sent towards the Incans.
Check Tlaxcala since I think I missed it for happiness.

I'll be back with some pictures...

The Save

In 810 Satsuma goes down.

Azteca in 830

Teno flips

Ta Tu and Leo's are captured in 840

Arabs are threatening the Ottomans so we need to intervene in 940.

Ta Tu flip to the Greeks in 940. We get it back the next turn.

In 980, the Greeks are a little too late and end up in no man's land.

For the next player. Here's Greece and the start of a ship chain. Make sure to plant the settler inside Alexandria's borders before stopping the war. It would also make sense to plant inside the Sumerian border you see here.

German stack should be ready for the Mayans once the musket gets there.

The eastern ship chain.

I can continue playing on tonight if no one is interested in picking this up.

I'm not able to get to it anytime soon (before Saturday). I don't mind if you play on.

OK then I'll try to get some turns in so we can speed this up.

A few drop offs that will easily be dispatched.
1060 Take down Elephantine without an issue and move the settlers in place. Bring the ships south for invasion of Sumeria. Send the army near the Mayans towards Mongolia since we'll have peace in 3 turns. We'll also have peace with the Russians next turn so we'll take the city on the German island. Get some spears ready for the Mayans later...

IT Tlaxcala flips to the Persians. Persians land units next to Mayans.

1070 Land on Sumeria but it's not next to the city. Gift Istanbul to the Mayans and declare. Land next to a stack of Persians. Hopefully, they'll knock them back a bit and not take the city. Land the units on Mongolia and we have two turns of peace left.
Declare on the Russians since they have a city on the German island. Take the city easily.

IT Persians don't give them nearly enough. We get a counterattack from the Mayans and they kill our musket. Crap...
Lose Osaka since I didn't see a Roman sitting next to the city.

1080 Hit the Mayans once with an elite and get a MGL. Load everyone on a boat so we can bring back a army. Take out a few Sumerians and land a huge stack next to Sumer. Don't have enough to take back Osaka but help is on the way.

IT Persians look like they got bludgeoned on the Mayan island.
1090 Kill the LB in Osaka with a crusader. Knock out a Incan musket/Mace pair on old Iroquois.
Fill the army on the German island. Kill a Mayan trying to sneak up on Faro.
Bombard Sumer and reveal 6 vet pikes. Take them out and Sumer is ours. Whack some units in the way towards their capital and land right next to them.
Investigate Kazan.

Ikes...4 vet rifles and 1 regular. We'll need to move another unit into the army since its 50/30/20 to win but 75/16/9 with 3 cavs. I'll probably need some cannon support for this job. They can't get there for 6ish turns so I'll aggressive settle and play a defensive counterattack by drawing them out and reinforcing.
There's a couple keshiks running around and they'll have to go first.
We're at 46% land and 56% population.

IT The Mayans are battling with both the Persians and Hittites. Lots of damage on both sides. See a ship leave Kazan. Let's hope it took some rifles. The Chinese land cavs on German island but that's a big mistake. Incans land pike/mace on Iroquois island.

1100 Lose a cav on Iroqouis island but take out the mace/pike with two elite wins.
Take Ur without any losses and gain the pyramids.
Check out Kazan and the situation is the same. Aggressively settle near the city.
Have to gift the Japanese some saltpeter and the Iroquois iron since the Persians port is allowing us to have extra.
We're at 47% land and 57% population.

IT We get huge luck as the rifles on a hill decide to land on desert.
1110 Start with Copan and knock 3 muskets down to 3hps.
To Lagash: Lose an army and redline a 2nd. Wow..but take out the rest with vets and a few elite wins. Make peace with teh Sumerians.
To Copan: Take out two of the muskets with our army. Take the city and fort our cannons with the crusader and a newly minted elite cav.
Declare on the Mongolians. Start with a 3 cav army and take out two rifles but the army is 4/13.
Take out the vet keshik but lose to the reg keshik with a cav.
Send a vet cav and beat a rifle.
2nd retreats doing damage. We're down to a regular in Kazan.
3rd redlines the rifle but loses.
4th retreats doing 1hp damage.
5th takes down a 3/4 rifle.
Elite razes the redlined rifle that's left.

Summary:
We're at 48% land and 59% population.

Here's what's left for us. We're already hitting the Mayans. We need to move to the Hittites and Chinese afterwards and continue to move north towards the Indians.
The Persians have 4.7% land but they are an absolute beast holding 14,000 gold and are likely running 4 turn research.
3.8% land Mayans. Still using muskets but we could use some reinforcements.
5.5% land Hittites who don't have astro or metallurgy so should be an easy target. We'll need to gift a junk city.

6.1% land China. May have rifles so adding a unit to a army or two will probably be necessary.

3.3% land India who still don't have metallurgy.
4.3% land Korea who don't have saltpeter. Both need junk cities.

3.2% land Incans. Still have muskets.

Everyone else is around 1% or less. We'll need more temples and settlers to finish the job.

The Save

Woo, brutal stuff. I'm going to try to have a look tonight, make some maps, count some tiles. Then get some turns played over the weekend. Just judging from the graphs, it looks like we should expect to hit 67% in about 20 turns, so now is the time to start thinking about when and where to rush temples.

Erm, I haven't played any turns yet, but I have counted a lot of tiles. Over 500 in fact, as we are 499 tiles short of dom. Specifically, we could reach dom by taking out the Mayans (campaign already started, but needs a lot more troops), the Hittites (a large force is already en route), and the Inca (close to Portugal, and there are ships here, but few nearby troops), and by filling out their lands with extra settlements, as well as throwing up some temples in regions we already control. That way we don't need to take on the Persian and Chinese rifles.
The problem is judging how long it will take. If the military gets finished doing its job before the temple culture is ready, then it can move on to the next victim (India and Korea are the last two easy targets). That in turn reduces the need to rush temples. We are looking at between 10 and 20 turns, and I would guess that the military gets as far as taking on at least one of the extra two civs. There is a slight logistical problem that both the Inca and Hittites are a bit isolated with respects to shipping the troops on to other targets (unless we want to try taking on the Persian rifles).

There's a pretty good ocean route from the Hittites north to the Mayans, Indians and Koreans so that might be better than taking on the Chinese. It might be worthwhile splitting the forces headed to the Hittites and send them towards the Mayans.

mm, so the Inca look like the odd ones out. We should concentrate on the southern hemisphere civs, with new military builds targetted at Korea (industrial, but as yet without Nationalism). I'll bring some ships down from the France-Quoia-Mongolia area to ferry units over the Jutland straits.
I'm going to try getting some turns laid down tonight. :please:

Update: one interturn played, and my plan is unravelling already. Greece went industrial and drew Nationalism. Looks like they traded it to Korea, so Wang now has access to rifles and drafts. So do we (a) target the Koreans anyway, hoping to catch them before they make too many of them, or (b) bypass them for now, hoping to pick up enough territory without Korea, and come back to either Korea or Inca if we need to scrounge a couple of extra tiles once we are done with the medieval civs? My current inclination is to try skipping Korea, as we don't have any military there right now anyway.

Okay, sorry about the huge wait. Here is 1200ad; 33 tiles over dom.

SG14_Domination_1200ad.jpg

SG14_1200ad_score_graph.jpg

I was crunching some serious numbers with respect to expected shield-per-tile-gained costs for all the possible settler and temple builds, and recalculating every turn, so I was only getting through about one turn per day. After playing the first 3 or 4 turns, I became convinced that it would be possible to reach dom within 10 turns, so then I started crunching the numbers even harder, trying to figure out when exactly the culture should be rushed. I think I picked the right turn for that, given that we ended only narrowly over the limit. The Mayans and Hittites both went down easily, although the Persians snagged one of the Mayan towns. I ended up invading both the Inca and Indians, but didn't make much headway with the Inca. I only had one turn to operate in India, so I deliberately over-extended, knowing I would be looking for peace at the end of the turn anyway.

Well done, Elite. :goodjob:

We'll get the results out later today.

Congratulations!

Great Going PB!

That saves me the headache whether to find the time for the finish or to skip.

Thanks all who tagged along on this rather bumpy ride.

For the record, here is my full turn log of what happened in the last turnset...

And here is the (slightly) summarised version...

Wake up the idle slaves. Camp Elite and Flamborough are still over on food, so can take a bit of forestry. There are other tiles still to be improved, though not to any purpose. I just like to see the toil of the chain-gangs.
Start looking for towns which will need a temple or settler to grab domination tiles, and switch some builds over.

1110 - 1120

A French longbow trespasses.
The Mayans drop a landing party at Lagash.

Builds: 2 temples, 17 settlers, 1 carrack, 4 horses, 1 cav, 1 crusader.

Greece goes industrial and gets Nationalism. Wang gets Nationalism from him.
The Inca also go industrial, but of course they can't get hold of any decent techs.

Autoboot the French. No dow.
Give Abe peace, just to get an extra smile in one ex-American town.

Dow the Hittites and drop a cav stack onto a mountain at the northeastern end of their territory, near Tarsus.
Advance the cannon stack in the Mayan campaign towards Tikal, the town closest to the edge of their territory; trouble with cannon is they take so long getting to their target.
Kill the stray Mongolian rifle and the Mayan landing party, and sink a couple of Incan galleys.

Found 4 new towns.

1120 - 1130

French, Americans and Zulus all try trespassing.
The Aztecs drop a landing party at Copan.
We lose a cav in Copan to a Chinese cav which appears from Mayan territory.

Builds: 1 harbour, 1 worker, 3 settlers, 1 carrack, 3 horses.

1130 ad

Autoboot the French, Americans and Zulus. No dows. This dance becomes a regular occurence, every turn for the rest of the set.

Capture Tarsus, but lose an army mopping up stray units nearby.
Drop a cannon stack next to the other north-coast Hittite town, Hattusas.
Kill the Aztecs at Copan.

Found 7 new towns.

1130 - 1140

The Indians drop a landing party into Germany. I guess Gandhi is looking for a fight. Suits me.

Lagash flips back to Sumeria. Infuriating, as we are at peace with the Sumerians.
Builds: 1 barracks, 1 harbour, 6 horses.

1140 ad

Give Mao peace as he is threatening our Mayan operation.

Dow the Sumerians, after forgetting to gift them a newly founded prison city up in the tundras. Pft. Take back Lagash.
Gift newly founded Indian Prison (next to the Mongolian Prison) to the Indians, and boot them for a dow. Kill the landing party in Germany.
Lose an army attacking Hattusas. There isn't enough muscle to take it this turn, so bring over plenty of cavs from Tarsus.
Capture Tikal.

Found 4 new towns.

1140 - 1150

The Hittites get a stack of units next to Tarsus, but I'm not worried. There are plenty of cavs still arriving by ship.

Builds: 1 settler, 2 cavs, 3 horses.

1150 ad

Give Mongolia peace on the assumption we are getting weariness from that war. But peace doesn't seem to help our happiness at all... give peace to Rome and Aztecs as well. War weariness abates somewhat.

Capture Hattusas and annihilate the Hittite stack at Tarsus. That should be the Hittites pretty much spent.
Land a small force of troops on an Iroquois hill, with a view to starting a campaign against the Inca.
Cavs not needed in the Hittite campaign land at Palenque, the southernmost Mayan town. They find Persian units already beseiging the town.

Found 2 new towns, and rush 20 temples, using disbands in some cases. I have decided domination in 1200ad is achieveable.

1150 ad - 1160

The Persians take Palenque from under our noses.

Builds: 20 temples, 2 settlers, 3 horses.

1160 ad

Advance cavs into the Hittite tundra forests, ready to strike at 3 of their 5 remaining towns.
The frustrated cavs at Palenque head north towards the Mayan capital.
Get a leader picking off stray units in Hittitia. Use him to form an empty army, then chain the army up to Lagash and disband it into a library; I couldn't rush there because it is resisting.

Rush 3 more libraries, whose culture will catch up with the temples in 1200ad.
Found 1 new town.

1160 - 1170

Tikal flips back to the Mayans, taking 2 units. No problem for our cavs.

Buils: 4 libraries, 4 settlers, 1 carrack, 6 horses, 1 crusader.

1170 ad

Take Chichen Itza and Tikal. That is effectively the end of the Mayan campaign. Units can now sail west from the Maya to attack India.
Move off the Iroquois hill into Incan territory, where I want to found a foothold town. There are a lot of Incan units shuffling around though, and I still don't have much military comitted to this campaign.
Take Ugarit, Aleppo and Hattusha, leaving the Hittites with one more townb to take, and one in which they can spend the rest of the game.

Sell culture buildings which aren't needed for any more expansions, to raise cash for settler rushing.

1170 - 1180

India drops a landing party next to Copan. Ooo I'm scared. That's a marshalling ground for cavs bound for the Indian campaign...

Builds: 7 settlers, 4 carracks, 6 horses.

1180 ad

Capture Machu Picchu and pick off some stray Incan units, but there are still more hanging around in our territory, and it doesn't look like I will be able to make much more headway in this campaign.
Take Tyrana, the last town in the Hittite campaign, leaving their town on the southeast peninsula; it is too remote to easily approach anyway, so is a fine place to leave them.
Brush away the Indian landing party, and drop 6 carrack-loads of units in India, next to Delhi.

Rush the final round of settlers; they will get to move and found in 1190ad, and count for dom in 1200ad.

1180 - 1190

The Incans kill one of our stray units with a cav. That wasn't expected!

Builds: 14 settlers, 2 carracks, 6 horses.

1190 ad

Capture Calcutta, Delhi, Madras and Lahore. Try to push on west to Bangalore, but run out of troops. As the Indians will be left with some of their own towns, reclaim the 2 tiles I gave them earlier by autorazing Indian Prison.
Try to grab the only reachable Incan town, Cuzco, but fail, losing an army in the process. No more Incan territory taken.

Give the Inca and Indians peace as both are capable of serious counterattacks on our overstretched forces. Give Babylon peace, and we no longer have war weariness.

Found 27 new towns.

1190 - 1200

Persia demands 51g. Well, I'm sure we aren't going to need it for anything. Hand it over.
Osaka flips to Persia. Irritating, but I still expect to reach dom.

Builds: 1 harbour, 6 horses.
The culture all comes through, and we hit domination.

With perseverance, skill, and a good dose of luck, we claimed the Spoons!

I am curious to read the other team threads and see if their AIs learned Feudalism faster than our group of boneheads.

Thanks for finishing it, Paper Beetle. And nice that we finally made it!

I'm back and it's good to see we've finished this off. Thanks for putting great effort into the finish PB.

I haven't checked the other threads but I'm interested to see what happened on feudalism too.
