SGOTM 14 - Elite

Note too that the Persians have The Great Lighthouse and I don't think we have the right tech that makes it obsolete. So we have a backup for Magellan's Voyage, if we need it.

No such luck on Leonardo's Workshop, though.

OK played the rest of PBs turn and bad RNG luck continued unabated.

I attacked Tabriz killing 2 vMuskets and wounding 3 more before the first rMusket appeared. I lost 3 Cavs in the process, so I called it off. I landed the rest of our troops. next turn I will add the wounded Cavs to 2 off the Armies to allow them to heal and spend a few turns nabbing stragglers.

I would try to ship over a settler and put in a agressive Settlement where I let the AI die attacking 2 full strength Armies. In the meanwhile the other troops can go out an attack Mongol cities which should be only lowly defended.

Looking at the whole situation I would actually suggest to wipe out the Mongols completely. remember it does cost us 10 tuzrns of our end date if we do so, but it would allow us to live without the constant flips. My guess is, that it would save more than 10 turns to just wipe them out.

PS: I am standing now at 7-4 kills due to a heroic but finally dead crusader near Helgoland. I gifted the city to the russian, since we will attack there in 12 turns anyway.

That's painful. It sounds like the Mongolian campaign is going to be a long hard affair. So camping on that mountain, using armies to kill anything that strays onto the flat lands might be the best plan, as you guessed before. Are you thinking of settling over on the west coast, or near Tabriz and our current position?

About the libraries, I suppose I would agree that they can be sold. Surely we can finish this without having to restart research?

Well it needs a hill and it shouldn't overlap with any mongol cores. The spot on the northwestern tip does this bu t has two mountains next to it. But all other spots would need the destruction of a established city first.

As for the Libs: I checked and we have a noticeable flip risk, whenever we are situated next t a prison city. These nations won't grow much in culture anymore but I rather not reduce our culture rate further. We can afford these 6 gpt.

ARRRRGL

Today 6 am in the morning I booted my VMware to play the next turn.
As usually it hung up on the first start (it just need a second boot) and I clicked on restart Computer. Unfortunately I clickled on "Rollback to last Safepoint" instead and my PC is now back in November 2008.

Apart from the several lost HOF games also the temporary save of the game is lost.

I will need a few days to get some tools installed again, but it will probably be impossible to play 3 turns exactly as happened.

I think it's best for you to replay as closely as you can.

Try searching your computer for .sav files. I think a system restore should roll back your installations, but leave user-created files intact.

Its a virtual image restore. He just rolled back to the last drive image he had.

I will try to do my best in replaying, but it will take a while.

Well I am mostly back to where I left off (Turn 3).

Mongol:
Not much happened here. Tschengis has settled himself on the spot where I wanted to go and has shuffled 6 Muskets into the new town. Still it looks like the best bet and 4 Armies should be able to take it. In the meanwhile I heal and start on ressource denial.
Also he and 4 other buggers are in the IA, so Rifles might pop up soon.

Rome:
The 6 missing Cavs really hurt. as I just have not enough attacks to reduce the Roman stacks as far as necessary. So this Interturn there will be a 30% Chance of a loss of Veji. But we have got 2 new Armies here and the Arty has arrived too, so even in the worst case we can reconquer next turn and from then on his offensive potential should be crippled. I expect them to be gone by the end of this turnset.

It had to happen that the AI would reach the industrial, but I was hoping it wouldn't be quite so soon, and we could cripple the Mongols in time. The only blessing is that they aren't SCI. Remember back when no AI on the planet could even manage Feudalism in 30 turns?

Well it hasn't happened yet, so we might still cripple the Mongol in time.

Only had time for the MM and the interturn today:

Rome:
The battle for Veji came down to the last hp of the last musket but we held. And Caesar has not been able to shuffle new units on the battlefield this turn, so I guess he is gassed.

Mongol:
Tschengis has shuffled millions of units around. Unfortunately he was twice unable to find his way in the mountains and walked into our Armies. It was so laughable that one of our Army Commanders choked on a chicken bone while laughing and died.
(A Veteran MI attacked a 9 HP Army on a mountain and killed it taking only 2 damage)

Celtica:
The celts begged for peace and in honour of PB I declined. They went away again pouting and decided the best Course of Action was an declaration against the Maya (No alliances involved). Sometimes the AI reallly puzzles me.

Kulko, how is it going?

Almost done! I am at the start of turn 10 and will finish tonite.

We have conquered rome, made no real progress in Mongolia, have working shipchains to all fronts and pay 26 gpt to china for peace. (They landed on a real inconvinient spot)

PS: Why can I upgrade a Horse to Cav without having Iron, but not a spearman to Musket?

pay 26 gpt to china for peace. (They landed on a real inconvinient spot)

I trust they are still fortified in the exact same place, waiting for us to cancel the deal with a boot when it is convenient for us?

Yeah, spear should upgrade straight through to musket with no problems. It isn't just a cash shortage?

lurker's comment: Is the spear in a city with a barracks and access to saltpeter?

Well due to the destruction of Rheims There are a few unoccupied spots on the island. But the settler will land next turn and then we can regroup our cash.

Trafalgar just didn't have a barack :-)

Save is up.

German Front-:
I carry the 2 new Cavs over, but mess up the logistics. So its left up to the wounded survivors of last round.
eCav(3) kills vCav(2) and creates a great leader. (again on the wrong frontier)

Roman Front:
cavArmy kills vPike and takes Neapolis
We have conquered Italy but he is not willing to give us Roman Prison for peace. I have no units for conquest in place.
I hav aso kept both Antium and Neapolis. We will ae o see what the flip risk comes out now that the nearest city is pisa. If it is too high we should rather resettle.

I find another salpeter which i didnt pillaged yet

Turn 10:
The great Shuffling
Make peace with France.

Victory in the West

We have conquered Rome completely and exiled them to Pisae. I had to capture the prison city because he didn't want to give it in the peace deal. We a still at war, and can react to flips.

I have kept most of the cities because there were settling galleys around. They have still resistors and flip risks of up to 2,5 %. I have 1-2 troops in each for the resistors, but would not put troops in to heal.

Next Target is Azteca, with all prepared to land 3 Armies,3 Muskets 5 Cavs and 1 Knight on the red cross next turn. Afterwards you can shuffle over the 10 cannons and it should be a pushover.

Logistics

The shipchain in the west is a bit in disorder because I have just been shifting the beginning to flameborough and the end to Azteca. But there are enough ships in the area and it should work like this:
