SGOTM 17 - Unusual Suspects

Getting late here, so I'll wait until tomorrow to move the worker or anything - it would be nice if our other team members chimed in?

edit: yes, given what we see now, the archer location 3W1S seems best.

Doing my best! All the easiness of my program seems to have been replaced by hardness, so I'll be less than useful this sgotm.. But I wouldn't want to not be a US (what happened to our apostrophes?), just in case I get kicked out of the program and need something to do!

Your team saves are available.

Let the games begin!

Those about to die, we salute you. :salute:

That last line has me a bit concerned.

Off to bed. Question for the evening - is it better to move the worker 1NW for exploration, or should we have him moving toward the pigs ASAP?
I actually like NE onto the hill to see if there is anything to the east that would be available along with the 'phants. I can't tell from the screen shot; if you can see in the save, then nevermind. Note that whereever the worker moves, he will still need the same number of turns to get to the pigs.

Barring something else available with the 'phants, then I agree with archer location for capital. Pigs, plus another food, plus hills. Also, since this is immortal, we have lower happy/health cap (right?).

If we settle 3W1S, we need a border pop to grab the pigs. If we settle on t1 (next turn) we would not get the pigs until t6. It will take 4 turns to get to the pigs if we move the worker 1NW.

I think we should move the worker 1NW to see what else is up there.

@kcd, Why "New Random Seed on Reload"??
Doesn't this mean if a game crashes and a team needs to replay a turn, then even if they did everything identically the same, if there were any random things (like combat), then the results might be different?
This is unlikely to have any affect on the game, but I was surprised to see it.
[Should I have asked in the maintenance thread or PM?]
Spoiler :
edit, is this the one error you map makers are obligated to make?

And remember, we should revolt to slavery this turn before moving the settler.

I think someone pointed out that if we settle on turn zero, then it doesn't matter when we revolt. But if we aren't settling T0, we really should revolt immediately.

Yeah - I noticed that too, and thought it was odd.

Re: the worker move. Onto the NE hill might be good. I'm lousy at predicted tile visibility without testing. Note that that hill is 1 tile away from the edge of the map, so we would not want to settle a city any farther east than the tile on which the settler is now standing.

OK, I downloaded and opened the save. The only tile that we can learn more about is the one N of the western elephant. It is probably grassland. May as well check it out by moving NW. No point in moving NE.
[edit: moving NE lets us see the jungle tile 2NE, still I retract my NE suggestion and agree with NW for the settler]

Also, we are once again in the lead. High score and fastest progress. Go Team. :goodjob: :mischief:

agreed, nw for the worker, and revolt to slavery now.

i think the random seed is actually a very clever idea to thwart cheats.

Deckhand actually confused me by saying "agree with NW for the settler."

I propose:

1. Move worker 1NW.
2. Revolt to slavery.
3. Stop and screenshot map.

OK?

edit - another question - is it better for the worker to farm pigs or chop first?

This was done intentionally on this game for reasons that will remain undisclosed until the competition is complete. Game crashes should not require you to replay more than 1 turn due to autosave set to 1. If we had no new random seed on reload as per usual, you'd anyhow get different results anyhow if you failed to follow the exact same movements. So this is unlikely to affect the game.

Please do not play on a computer that is prone to frequent crashes, as this could raise suspicions about intentions, especially if you are at a critical juncture.

Assuming the worker finds nothing, and also assuming the scout & archer also find nothing else to make us change our current thinking of settling where the Archer is standing.

In this case, we will settle on t1, and the worker will arrive at the forest 1W of the Archer on t3, chop will take 3 turns, finishing on t6. So he can move 1 SW and pasture the pigs on t7. To get 1 early chop into a Granary would be invaluable.

If we do not move the worker NW, and move either W or SW, then we finish the chop on t5 and start pasturing pigs on t6.

I still think it is worth the 1 turn delay, in the small chance we find a food resource up there, so green from me.

We could do an exploring WB, for sure. With SIP, the best tile was the clams, so a WB first was vital.

If we settle over by the pigs there is no seafood (that we can see) in the BFC, so it changes our first build priorities IMO.
