SGOTM 22 - Anti-TSR

Counting all owned tiles, 9barb garrisons (at least) and two barbs in Anarctica, it appears there are at most 8 roaming barbs remaining.

Better chance for Aes wonders. Anyone else tech Aes yet?

So Sal is a runaway train here. We definitely want to put his brakes on. We need to get Mecca on the first try, T+1, without fail. Chances are probably that he will keep tring for wonders there rather than building vassalage defenders, right?

Now I'm thinking more than one team will lose this game. Gonna be tough. I wonder if BSP even finished it.

We'll probably need another Great Spy to catch the last runaway train(s).

Not sure we need any cats for Mecca. I'd probably go with just prats. Not sure we can take it if it's defended by more than 2 lbms with 8 prats.

I also concluded a few weeks ago that several teams won't finish. Not necessarily lose, but just give up cus they don't want to play a fast speed total conquest. I'm not saying it's not a well designed conqueror's challenge...just saying it's not a desirable game. I would have liked to see 1 or 2 runaway trains...not 6.

I had to raze the east barb city. At least we got 54 gold for our dead chariot. We'll need to see how many and what type of units Rome will need. I sent 3 chariots West, but I planned to bring one back. Rome will need +5 new units.

Got a road and a cleared jungle tile too. Well done! :)

Well played so far. We could always upgrade a warrior or two to meet Rome's requirements. Takes on the apparency of a waste, but if it there's an opening to grab Mecca, it might actually pay off with earlier gold. The Shrine is also giving many coins a turn.

I doubt 8 attackers will be enough to take Mecca now that Sal has access to (CG3) Lb's. I expect we will need at least 12 or 14. Problem with praets only is that the odds for not scatching a Longbow are very high (40% against CG3, 35% against CG2). Cats are guaranteed to deal at least some damage. I'd probably plan for 4-5 cats and 7-10 praets. That should at least make additional axe, sword & HA defenders a non-issue.

For T+1 we'll need units/2 galleys. I think WT's plan depends on FC unit production at the expense of galley production. It also whip away some future production for immediate production, if I'm not mistaken. Do we need to re-think that?

Mecca is remote from any attacks and I'm fairly certain AIs are coded to defend remote cities less. I didn't see any wandering units around Mecca. Medina could provide mounted defenders. That's it. If Mecca doesn't build and replace its defenders, we might have a window of opportunity.

Critical to our success, I think, will be:
1. Exposing Mecca's city and adjacent defenders asap.
2. Exposing Mecca's Build Production data, so we can catch him building a wonder, other building, or settler.
3. Deciding on an appropriate attack force. How many praets per CG2 lb, etc?

We can see into Mecca on T117 by Galley 1 picking up Chariot 3 at Nubian-2E on T113, drop off at Najran-2E2S on T114. Viewing Mecca asap is an imperative. Don't worry about supply costs.

Big Picture -- Balancing the 3 Aes wonders with capturing Mecca

We should consider being patient about Mecca. Wait for a golden opportunity. Eventually, it will have 2 defenders and be building a wonder. That means we'll need to have a solution for Rome on any given turn but it also free Rome up a bit to focus on wonders.

For example, after (revolting to OrgRel and) putting the current hammers into the Parthenon, we could 1whip the spy, which is about to start decaying, for more OF into Parth. We need the 6th building in Rome anyway, so it's either Parthenon or 60h for a monastery.

Not sure how that conflicts with WT's current plan.

I would stop trying to accumulate XP on warriors and send them to Rome for emergency upgrade. I would send one warrior to Sal for our DoW(T+0) reconnaissance. Send the chariots back to defend Rome eventually, although Chariot3 still clears Mecca on T117 first. Minimize the hammers needed to provide 12 defenders in Rome.

that was kinda my original thought but it got lost. I guess I just decided instead to wander the jungle looking for a barb to gain xp on. Then I thought I would find a city and catch some roads. I did spot some new AI culture, so I might get to Mecca T117 anyway. I'll do what you suggest.

yea, I was going to abort the south XP hunt.
You want to send one warrior on the last galley space? or you want me to send WoodyII over?

I still want 2 chariots for grabbing Baghdad. I was going to send one back.

We can't afford to sit in the water paying 28 gpt (unit suppy+maintenance) on our army. I want the city and the conquest gold too, and we have to try hard not to burn gold on upgrades. I think we need enough gold to be first to Music. And we can't just beat them to it by a couple turns cus then they'll finish it and we'll have a hard time getting Sistine.

I didn't end up doing the 1whip in HC which is probably what you were thinking about when referring to immediate production.

At any rate. I'll freshen up the PPP soon. I'll probably play the anarchy turn at least. I think FC is about to whip next turn, so that might be something to reconsider.
