[BTS] SGOTM 26 - The Indecisive

Hi guys!

I just signed up for this game a few hours ago and AlanH pointed me to this fine team.
Hopefully this is not a problem with you.
Not sure if anyone remembers me, I was an active player in GOTM/HOF in the past but haven’t played a game for the last five years...Still I am happy to be allocated in a group with so many talented players! Can’t think of a better way to learn again how to play this game :)

Cheers

For the record, I was able to download and open the initial save without any problems (no moves of course).
Might have helped the fact I just had a fresh install of my old discs in a Win10 laptop that had never been used to play CIV until recently this week.
I also took some pics of the actual save that might help with building sims and strategy discussion (forgot how to capture screenshots , and also how to insert those files here), so will list initial findings here.

  • AI Civs already had their 1st cities settled
  • Game settings: high sea level, arid climate, Aggressive AI
  • Spoiler Demographics :

You will find your screenies in Disk:\MyDocuments\My Games\Beyond the Sword\ScreenShots\ (took by pressing PrintScreen button while ingame).
You can upload them using sites like imgur and the

Anyway, with some delays :mischief:, here is the test save I've made:

I still need to change the starting tech, I will modify the climate. But it's a starting point at least

Here is the save with correct techs (didn't bother to do it again with agressive AI and arid climat).

From quick testing: settling more than 4 cities will put us on STRIKE, and workers are as expected immediatly disbanded. Not settlers though.

IMO settling more than 2/3 cities before doing at least TW/AH/pottery (sailing might be a good too) will put us in a bad situation.

Test save much appreciated. Pleased to learn that settlers will not be affected by a Strike.

(BTW, am I correct in understanding that you reside in or near the City of Lights?)

Welcome CQ63! Good to see you back!

Back from hiatus myself, I already screwed up. Alan has given me a reprieve for making accidental, inconsequential, moves on the real game. I suggest everyone considering pausing their game, and when uploading, pausing the game. My dinosaur laptop pauses by pushing Fn + shift. Every PC may be different. Note, if the game save is paused, always reload the save before unpausing and playing the turns, because some moves that were queued before unpausing will be executed once the game is unpaused.

All test games should have "test game" in the name so no one accidentally plays the real game thinking it is the test game.

Thanks for the test save RRR. After a test game, it is clear that CPete's novel idea of a mass settling does not provide a significant benefit. Research is severely hampered and hammers can only usefully go to buildings. At the start, those are monumunts and barracks. Once four cities are built, a palace can be built, but only in one city, so palace fail gold is not an option. Monuments provide no fail gold when Stonehenge is built.

"After a test game, it is clear that CPete's novel idea of a mass settling does not provide a significant benefit." I trust but will verify that conclusion. Monuments are useful to expand cities, and granaries, when available, certainly will be valuable.

Recommendations re pausing and labeling test games are points well taken.

God I hope that the "heavily modified" game is nothing like the test game. I fekkng hate an archipelago map. Building naval units and setting up galley or galleons chains is so annoying and exploititive. For anyone who has looked at RRR's test game, it has 989 land tiles vs 773 in the real game. So... lots of water. We will have to consider TGL instead of the UN...

Can we start a discussion on T0 moves for exploration and SIP at the fur/crab/deer/cow site.

It could be tested to see it might be feasible after turn 4-5. If there are amazing settling sites not visible on T0, it could be viable, but doubtful considering the map looks to be filled with ocean with limited land tiles.

Thanks all for the warm welcome!
Nice job with the test map, RRR.
Do we care to guess our rivals’ initial moves? PR & HS already submitted some saves.
From the score graph in the progress pages I would guess they settled 3 cities within the first turns (score=50).
They also settled at least 1 city @ t0 from the culture graph, I would guess the coastal site.
I would also guess they researched AH as their power graph went from 3 to 5.

@shulec: good point, we could discuss t0 scouting moves. Obviously the 2 candidates to SIP would move last, if at all.

EDIT: I would think each new early city's initial build would be a worker, is that a no-brainer?

Setter configuration:

______S4_____S7
S1
______S3_____S6
______S2_____S5

Settler 1 - SIP
Settler 2 S1E1
Settler 3 wait for 1st moves
Setter 4 N1W1
Settler 5 S2E2
Setter 6 wait for 1st moves - Poss SIP
Settler 7 N1, then E1

I think S7s moves are up for debate. What I have proposed gives a better view of the ocean utilizing the +2 vision across water.
S6 has wet plains rice as a decent tile, but, IMHO, the jungle gems render this a better support city than capitol.

S1 opening with WB vs worker will be my first test.

Workboat first is better. The best tiles are the crab and cows. Worker first, he is done before AH is in, 6 turns in the test game with no 2nd city settle. I don't see how this could be better than workboat first, especially with more cities being settled cutting into research. WB allows for growth and research before settler is out. WB -> Warrior(or SH) partial build until pop2->Worker while researching AH.

I'm fine with these moves, but here are my 2c:

S1 - probably SIP but wait for other moves before settling?
S3 - S1W1 (looking for more seafood?)
S4 - W1NW1 - it looks like there are 3 forested tiles NW,N,NE of the tundra hill, while it looks unforested N of furs PH
S6 SIP doesn`t look too bad in the long run, but will suck until border pops (and as it won`t be the capital, may take a while to happen)

Definitely wait to settle S1
Good thought for S3

I see something different on the real game, not the test game. I think there is one forest N of the tundra hill. I think NW of the tundra hill is an unforested flat tundra tile (+2 vision from hill) and NE of the tundra hill is ocean.
