[BTS] SGOTM 26 - The Indecisive

Do we have an updated testgame?

I suggest we move the settler on the sheep 1 N and then 1 SE

I like Shulec's suggestion of moving S7 1N before deciding on its second move.

"Moving 1N1E is essentially the same as moving 1N then 1E" I'm suggesting moving 1N then 1NE, but concur with S7 moving 1N and then delay for screen shot and discussion.

Folket, are you recommending the second move of S7 as 1SE onto the tundra hill in conjunction with not moving S6?

Don't we want to wait at least until we've complete T0 to update map? Decisions on T1 regarding research and builds will depend on testing. Not sure how testing will help us to determine remaining best T0 moves.

S7 has moved IN. Screenshot attached. Save updated in maintenance thread.

I like SE to have vision from the hill.

What might we learn from the tundra hill that would cause us to settle S6 as the capital? If we are not going to settle S6 as the capital (and not saying that would be a mistake), then there's not great advantage in leaving it in place (as it's not a great second city site), and the greater information would be gained by moving S6 to the east and moving S7 NE.

We don't have any sites for a super capital city, S1 is marginally better than S6 but it is still marginal. They're both better than any other sites visible from the start but that isn't saying much.

We could send S7 NE to check out the peninsula there, we could send S6 east to check out the lake, we could also send S1 west (either NW>W or N>NW) to see what's the other side of the fur.

I wouldn’t expect to find much better sites than those ones in an Ice Age mapscript. It is explictly stated in the game description that “Food is scarce, the land is tough, little grows, some animals are extinct”.

I am now leaning to settle S6 SIP as our capital both for the more central location, for the easy border pops (S1 can work ok tiles before border pops), and maybe even also for the long term levee effects on a bureau capital.

As I have already mentioned, score points from the rival teams that already submitted saves suggest that they setlled 3 cities within the 2 first turns, and at least one city @t0.

I'm thinking we should settle settler 6 first and then settler 1. But we can't decide anything before we have a test game. Does anyone have time to make the test game and then we have the current player as responsible to update it with moves?

On the basis of our current exploration we haven't found anything to change locations for S1 city or S6 city. If we want to explore further before settling this will involve moving S1 and S6 so we wouldn't be settling this turn. Other teams have decided to settle first turn rather than explore but that's gambling on S1 and S6 sites being optimal for the map.

It may well be worth running some tests to decide on initial research. At the moment I'm favouring getting mysticism early, maybe as first tech, because we don't want to overbuild units and I'm not sure of the value of putting hammers into early barracks.

If we research Mysticism first, then settling S6 on T0 would only seem to make sense if it is the capital; otherwise, perhaps better to wait until Mysticism and monuments are available for its first build.

The best way forward is certainly not obvious. Here's a suggestion for how we might proceed:

Move S7 onto the tundra hill as Folket advocates, then look at the water tile 2SE of that hill

If it is coastal tile, then (unless some new and valuable resource(s) is also revealed from the hill) it is unlikely that there is abundant land and multiple good city sites well to the east, so the probable distance-maintenance advantage of settling S6 in place is significantly lower. So we settle S1 as the capital (and probably move S6 to help explore, as settling the S6 site before we can build a monument is not particularly helpful).

If, on the other hand, the tile is fresh water, then there is likely much more land and good city sites to the east, and the distance-maintenance advantage of settling S6 as our capital will probably be significant. So, we settle S6 as the capital (though we could first move S1 onto the fir hill just to make sure there aren't two very good city sites to share the furs)

It seems like someone made a test game. Could you please share it?

We know its fresh water because the rice east of S6 can be irrigated.

I agree we should explore with S1 N>NW onto fur plains hill to check what's up there before settling.

We could either move S7 SE onto hill or move S7 NE and move S6 2E to check out the lakeside.

S6 site if pretty naff even with monument because there's isn't one decent tile in the first ring, does better as capital because we get border pop in 5 turns to work stronger tiles.

The water in the east is a lake since the rice has fresh water.

We're not getting very far very fast.

I propose moving S1 N>NW onto fur plains hill, moving S7 SE to look at the northern part of the lake, attach a couple of screenshots and update the save before moving onto a discussion about whether to settle S6 this turn.

If no-one posts objections and/or suggests alternatives I'll do this tomorrow morning/afternoon.
