[BTS] SGOTM 26 - Unusual Suspects

@ChrisShaffer - good thoughts.

I also noticed that we're very far behind in power - do you suspect they're rushing SB - or do you think they just got the power-increasing techs earlier, like BW / IW?

.....I'm happy with Poly or BW. After thinking about it, Pottery is too early - if we're going to work 2 scientists in Vienne, then we don't need it yet.

WB - we're building one in Bib now. I think Greg should build one ASAP to scout. 2 should be enough.

Peter seems a better first target.

I am a little concerned about our economy. There will be no cottage economy for sure... so if we want a decent tech rate, then a specialist economy is needed - i.e. Rep via 'Mids. The only alternative I know of is an out-of-the-box idea, and that is an espionage economy. I have never tried it, but I read about it some time ago. CoL would be higher priority in that case.

BTW- judging by the stonehenge (not yet) date, I think we can get any of the early wonders we decide to want.

Sorry I've been awol for a few days.

Agreed. I only know the basics with espionage.

Other econ move is GLH. +2 foreign overseas trade routes in 4 cities will be pretty powerful (once we open trade to Peter), and makes any island settlement immediately beneficial. [But that eliminates UN and Eiffel Tower, so we'd have to research Mass Media to get the broadcast tower]

Specialists seem like a best fit for us. Food is key. We'll struggle with production, compared to Slavery, but I don't see a better alternative. Tech path something like BW / Masonry / Math / Poly / Priest / CoL / Mono / MC.

Also since we MUST build a temple everywhere anyway, AP / UoS plan might also be superior to GLB / Oracle in this situation, even if we don't get an AP victory.
  • UoS more raw beakers
  • GLB more flexibility about when we need to build temples, and more great scientists. More bulbs.

PPP:
  • Research BW.
  • Grow cities to good tiles, work scientists to bad tiles. Vienne works 2 scientists ASAP.
  • Scout West as soon as possible.
Should only be about 5 turns.

My vote is BW. I'd like to see copper and start working any mines in a BFC. Plus enables slavery/whipping and chopping :nono:

PR has been uploading a save pretty much every turn, which seems like overkill to me.
That's how they play. Intense micro with lots of discussion. And Fippy (Mylene) is Amazing. That's really what you need to do so everybody has latest save if you are going to discuss each turn in detail.

edit,
Green

[I refreshed page to see that I had latest before posting. But forgot I was responding in a previous page and there was a later one. kinda like how I play, forgetting to switch civics etc]

Ok - I'll can play in 24 hours if nobody has any objections.

While we mull that - why don't we think about what's next after BW?

Green.
After BW we should, idk... math?

We should also have a bulb plan...

Math is good for me. Or something similar like Masonry -> Math, so we can start mids, and pre-chop while we tech math.

Are we pretty much agreed on Mids at this point?

We're talking the smooth kind of pyramid that you use any government type, and not one of those stepped pyramids that lets you fend off invaders better from the high ground, right?

(joke)

3 turns.

  • Great Wall and Stonehenge get built.
  • Bronze location is uninspiring.
  • Running out of things to build and work for workers. Nothing worth chopping.
Suggest Masonry, and have workers pre-chop forests. Opens up hammers in Mids, and potential for fail gold in GLH.

SH investment should let us go 100% for ~ 10 turns.

Code:
Turn 60, 1600 BC: The Great Wall has been built in a far away land!

Turn 61, 1560 BC: Tolosa has grown to size 5.
Turn 61, 1560 BC: Vienne will grow to size 6 on the next turn.

Turn 62, 1520 BC: Vienne has grown to size 6.
Turn 62, 1520 BC: Gergovia will grow to size 4 on the next turn.
Turn 62, 1520 BC: You have discovered Bronze Working!
Turn 62, 1520 BC: Stonehenge has been built in a far away land!

Turn 63, 1480 BC: Gergovia has grown to size 4.

Agreed. Maybe we'll have better luck with Iron.

WB should be ready in ~ 5 turns on Gregovia to explore. Bib's workboat is about 4 turns behind that.

  • V is working 2 scientists. It can grow to 7, but I think chop is better than farming plains?
  • Tolosa can probably build a library / another worker?
  • Bib can pre-chop. Bib can send more work boats over to 4-food city. I have it making a galley at the moment.
  • Greg's worker is busy.
Any thoughts on which city should build the mids?
Any thoughts on when we should switch to Slavery?

I think it'll be 7 turns to get Masonry and Math, since the SH fail gold means it's full-steam-ahead on beakers.

Of the cities we have now, Bib makes the best Ironworks city (='Mids). Second would be Tolosa, if we need Bib to be something else. I almost think the Horse/Deer/Silver site would be pretty good, and has enough forest to chop the needed big-ticket items. I almost think we should settle that and the 4-food site asap. I don't see it likely finding a better useful site any time soon. It leaves us 2 settlers to grab resources as needed... but maybe we should be on a gunpowder military path anyhow. Slavery right away, as it could be necessary to whip something quick in an end-game threatening emergency (and the anarchy turn costs the least when we are small).
