[BTS] SGOTM 26 - Unusual Suspects

Esp on Peter at least until we can see his demographics.
wheel-sailing route is green... best to reassess after, because maybe we want alpha and trade for cheap techs or maybe we want metal and found another city or two.

Agreed. I'm Green to keep playing - with ESP on Peter now.

Anyone have any thoughts on my city-micro comments?

Micro is something I seldom focus on, so no, no advice. Just do what makes most sense. I guess we should decide if we meet anyone else; I'd advise OB. Nobody seems to have met others yet, so there isn't a worse enemy list to follow, and no need to pause. IIRC neither AI has adopted a religion yet, but if we do get some spread somehow, perhaps worth a pause. I hope someone builds that Henge soon... hate to start losing invested hammers.

yeah, no religions yet. usually Zhary has something to say about my micro suggestions, given enough time.

I just got the keys to our new house, so I'll be unavailable for some days. Just carry on without me and good job. When I got time again I drop by with something clever. Hopefully after you guys oracled liberalism or something.

Hi Yamps, great to hear from you!
What games are you playing these days?
It's all work now, and some work-related education as well. And family life, as I got married in the meantime. :) Life brings different things at different periods, right? But the time for play will come back as well. :D

Hey all - especially @kcd_swede - I have time tonight or tomorrow during the day (I rarely can play during the day) - to finish up our current plan until we get Sailing.

Looking for a positive ack from KCD - since he's the active player.

UPDATE

  • Wheel and Sailing are in.
  • Scouting revealed basically nothing new. SB's East coast is lousy. He has bad land.
  • T-60, no henge yet - or any other wonders.
Turn 57, 1720 BC: You have discovered The Wheel!
Turn 58, 1680 BC: The borders of Gergovia have expanded!
Turn 59, 1640 BC: You have discovered Sailing!
Turn 60, 1600 BC: Tolosa will grow to size 5 on the next turn.

Great... and with more options, we have more choices to make! What real world date do we need to be done?

Here's my thoughts.....
  • Tech choices grouped by my preferences - order in groups is flexible
    • YES
    • Pottery - Good econ tech. Granary can help. Cottage is only of limited use. Keeps workers busy.
    • Bronze - I like this one too - good econ, and good map knowledge. Opens up MC and IW.
    • Poly - I like this one to follow up with Priesthood. Open up Oracle, CoL, halfway to Monotheism -> Theo. We need a religion.
    • MAYBE
    • Math - Good, but better after BW. Option to head to Currency -> CoL.
    • Alpha - Interesting now that we met Peter. But we have nothing to trade yet.
    • Masonry - Gut says 'meh.' Mids can get started, but not finished without BW / Math. GW is an interesting play for the Spy though. Cheap and Great Spy potential is always fun.
    • NO
    • Mediation - Meh.
    • Aesthetics - Meh, not until after Poly or Alpha at least.
    • HBR - No. Horse Rush is dumb against Castled SB.
    • Archery - No.
    • Future tech thoughts:
    • We're going to want a Great Engineer, so Engineering Wonder + Forge would be good. ...the slow wonder pace in the game has me intrigued. Can we maybe get OR (through CoL or Theo) in a city with a Forge and Math to build Mids? Maybe not. Probably so for Hanging Gardens. ......I'm not sure early REP is that powerful here, with limited food [aka limited specialists]. Though the 4-food city up north has potential for a specialist rich, National Wonder bonanza (which is unrestricted in this game).
    • Bib is a weak Buero cap, so Civil Service seems like a less important objective.
    • I think if we go AP, we should also go UoS (+18 :hammers: :science: based on all the rules). They go together well and fall on the same tech path.
    • I like the Great Library if we're also going Mids.
  • Scouting
    • Looks like we are about to max out scouting the East. We gotta get some boats going West. I want a WB or two over there 10 turns ago :(
  • Settling
    • That 4 food-site is looking better over time as a settle-sooner than later. I know, we discussed waiting until IW - but it's out of our way on the tech path, and the AI's are moving slow, and we have 3 settlers left.
    • Sheep / Gold / Ivory island is pretty weak, but +2 happy, and overseas trading bonus. Not very compelling. North of Bib looks good, but I'd like to see metals before settling there.

anybody?

How about I simplify - I think we should pick one of the following [Pottery, Bronze Working, Polytheism] next. I'm happy with any of those. Am I missing a critical immediate option?

Keeping workers busy seems like it shouldn't be the main reason to get Pottery, especially when there are roads they could be building to connect our cities (not that roads are our top priority, but hey, it's something). I would be happy with Bronze Working or Polytheism, with a slight preference for Poly. BW would also give the workers something to do (though I'm not sure how much chopping we want to do if we're never building any settlers).

A western exploring workboat should be a priority. Build it somewhere. Build two if you can.

If we choose Poly, I would settle the four food city now. If BW, then I'd be torn between settling and waiting to see the metal.

I also like Great Library + Mids. It's weird that there are no wonders yet. I can't imagine why.
