SGOTM 9 Signup Thread

I am confirmed with the Idiots, er, Woodpeckers.
Quite why I'm not sure, I'm far too sensible.

For the same reason I'm still a Cubs fan after 41 years, you're comfortable with failure as long as it's with a group of humorous, lovable losers. :)

Ah, but surely this time next year, if the past two years have been anything to go by, you'll be celebrating? At least you only have to win the NL Pennant to break your curse! :mischief:

It can be very disruptive for a team to lose members during the game - more so than in a non-competitive SG, because we can't often draft new players in to replace those who leave.
So please read the threads and check the levels of activity and involvement that are normal in the games we've played so far, and make sure you are happy with that level of commitment for this one :)

As a crazy noob, it looks like I'd carry this risk... While I'd be honored to face these good teams from the uh, inside of another team that I'm honoring :crazyeye: , well, I've lurked 1 SGOTM. I wouldn't quit, my commitment level would be stopping by once-twice a day, 5 days a week to catch up. Next day completion of my rotation, except Sundays and most Saturdays. I honestly don't know if that meets SGOTM standards. And I'm a total noob. Should I reconsider?

Nope. Drop in "will actually contribute to the discussion" and you'd be any team's ideal member.

@Jove: That level of commitment would be absolutely no problem for any of the teams here .

@Everyone: The main behaviour problems I see while lurking the threads are:

- Players just disappearing off the face of the earth. No apologies, no indication of a return date. Maybe they lost interest, or didn't feel competent to play at the team's level, or took umbrage at something someone said, or discovered they over-committed their time. Common courtesy would dictate that they discuss the issue with the team rather than just go AWOL.

- Players taking the save away for a week or more at a time, with no feedback on whether they are making progress or have fallen under a bus.

This is just a game, so we shouldn't get too up tight about it. But when four or five people are expecting you to participate, then surely plain, civilized good manners should prevail if it becomes difficult or impossible to comply. Post a skip if you can't play. Ask for advice of you are out of your depth or don't understand the team's direction. And my plea is simply for players to think just a little bit about their plans for the next two months before they sign up.

We can even accommodate players short of time - build a larger team from the get-go - maybe nominate volunteer reserves to step in for you, so that they know they can't wander the other threads .... But we need to know in advance, not half way through the game.

On a different note, please check out the poll I've posted here. I welcome discussion of the issues around the progress charts we publish, and whether theyy add to, or detract from, your enjoyment of the game.

I would like to sign up.
I can thrash Demi-God, and if I can force myself to concentrate long enough, I can do just fine on Deity.
I would like to be on team CDZ, I think they are putting together a team.

@Niklas,
Thanks I'd like your team if the staff assigns me there. But as I'm a noob to SGOTM it probably not up to me. As for my strong points I'm a good warmonger so this game will have a learning curve for me. I can play other styles but I like the war part. That's why I not moving on to civ iv, the focus there is more on building with little wars and none early.

I went on an unannounced AWOL from team Obormot and a few other SGs, but it shouldn't be an issue this time. So I'll sign up again.

Version: C3C
Level: Comfy on deity, can beat Sid
Team: Doesn't matter, or I can start my own Idiot B-team.

I'll sign up as well, we can try to assemble a CDZ team for this one mostly from those who still don't have civ4 or cannot run one.

I am going to have to withdraw my sign up for this SGOTM. I really would have liked to play, but my situation has recently changed to the point where I cannot guarentee I will have internet at the end of November. If it changes back before teams are compiled, I will definitely put my name back in the hat.

We're 6 7 already, and I don't know how much the other teams will need your psychotic maniac knife-crazy bunny of doom's help - but in the event everything rounds perfectly up well for all the others, and if you feel like it, know that you will always find shelter with us idiots.

This sounds like a really interesting scenario. I will be lurking eagerly! Maybe one day I'll actually have time to try one of these SG out. Good luck everyone!

This is a really weird variant. Should be a fun game.

1) C3C
2) Emperor or so
3) The Team Formerly Known As Cutlery

1) [c3c]
2) ~Emporor
3) Team Woody Woodpecker

Hmmmm, it could be awkward if I were assigned to a team without an invite. So, if I get an invite (no philanthropists please!), sign me up. If not, no prob, I'll persue other interests :)

@Jove: You shouldn't feel like that, invites are rather rare afaik (though there have been quite a few in this thread I see). Those that are, are due to people already knowing someone from some previous SG, or (like in our case ;)) a desperate need (for PTW players). You play C3C and you haven't played SGs, don't expect an invite. Doesn't matter, you'll certainly end up on a team that will be lucky to have you in any case. :)

@Niklas: thanks. It really isn't a matter of hard feelings though. I'm noticing that the SG's seem to already have established teams. My concern is being assigned to a team that has already developed a rapport and knows what they're doing, I make some huge error, and wind up getting sent to Noob Island. I plan on doing well of course, but you never know. If things do go sour, it'd be easier to take if the team in question 'asked for it'.
But maybe I'm being too hasty, I don't really know how the sign-up is supposed to work... I'm just a noob! :yeah:
