In case it has escaped your notice, please note that SGOTM 10 is now accepting sign-ups. Any Mac player with Civ3 Complete will be able to join a team, usually multi-national, play a few turns every week or so, and participate in team discussions about tactics and strategy, all in a friendly competition against other teams playing the same map.

It's a great way to raise your game and meet other Civ3 players, so why not give it a go?

i think i'll join. just need to read the rules and such first (haven't played it before). when is the last day for joining?

Why not sign up now? The rules aren't difficult, and most players who have joined teams have enjoyed it. You just need to be able to find time to play a few turns, and to join in the team discussions. We'll be starting the game on May 7th, and the teams will be set up early next week.

well ok then. i just signed up. i'll read the rules in the weekend.

q: if you find the competition boring is it ok to leave once it has started?

We build teams about six or seven members each. This has been found to result in a reasonable progression rate, with each team member able to contribute frequently enough to remember what the game is about and maintain continuity, without it getting too onerous as a workload.

If a member leaves after a team is set up and playing, that team has to carry on without them, so the remaining members have to take on more of the activity. We could try to find a replacement team member, but this is unlikely to be successful, as a new member must clearly be someone who's aware of the competition, but who also hasn't read the other teams' progress threads.

Obviously teams have to be able to survive the loss of a member - real life events, or even differences of opinion, may make it necessary for players to drop out. But these events are, thankfully, infrequent. Leaving because you're bored is not that kind of event, and would not be very good manners. So if you think that's probable in your case I recommend you don't join up.

as of right now i don't have enough information to tell whether i will find it boring or not. basically i'm next to totally ignorant about this SGOTM thing in fact. i'll know more by the end of the weekend. if i come to the conclusion that this will not be something for me then i will notify my withdrawal so i won't spoil the fun the rest of you by messing things up.

I would like to give it a Mac SGOTM succession a go again. A ducked the first one because I have been in Ainwood's part of the world (NZ) for the last three weeks although I played throught the initial stages on my own.

My location is near Reading in England is AlanH territory so I leave it to him to pick the best mix of locations for the groups.

i downloaded the SGOTM folder from the link found in the third post in the SGOTM reference thread and put it in the /Civ 3 Complete/Conquests Game Data/Scenarios folder. then i downloaded the test game found in the same thread and put it into the /Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/Saves folder. the game loads with no problem. however, i don't see the two map resources described in the thread. what am i doing wrong?

The SGOTM mod adds some resources, and these should work if installed as you did. In fact, the intention is that you should be able to put the folder into ~/Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/Scenarios/, removing the need to tamper with your Civ3 Application at all.

Unfortunately, neither of these options actually work. I notified Brad as soon as I saw the problem, and I believe this problem is fixed in the patch, which I thought was going to be out well before now .... any news, Brad?

In th absence of the patch, the workround it to copy the SGOTM resources.pcx and resources_shadows.pcx files to the Civ III Complete/Civilization 3 Game Data/Art/ folder to replace the standard files. The SGOTM files are a superset of the standard ones so you should never need to revert to play other games. However, you can rename the standard ones or back them up first if you wish.

If you want the Civilopedia images to display for these resources you will also need to copy the SGOTM pediaicons.txt file into Civ III Complete/Civilization 3 Game Data/Text/, backing up the standard file, and copy the entire contents of SGOTM/Art/Civilopedia/Icons/Resources/ into Civ III Complete/Civilization 3 Game Data/Art/Civilopedia/Icons/Resources/.
