Hmmm... Since there has been some interest in a PTW version, I think I'll provide it.
I'm thinking of turning Mace and Rambo off for the human player only, though I'll go along with whatever people want. The teams can decide themselves which save they play from.

Are we creating our own teams? I thought this was like the past games where you do a blind draw and group the teams. If people are allowed to form their own there may be some imbalances.

People are going to be allowed to pick their own teams of 4 people. Of course the staff broke that rule immediately

But 4 men teams were specified so that I could add a strong or a weak (me) player or two to the team to balance it a little.
I am going to spend a LOT of time getting people into the types of game they want to play and at the same time try to keep them at equivalent strength.
The majority of people will sign up as individuals and get pot luck as usual. But there will not be any closed shop teams. There was a discussion thread where this was chewed ove a little, and it seemed the best way to go.
I will let the staff team slide. If they want to field such a motley crew, then that is entirely their look out IMHO.

I guess mad-bax is willing to allow a mix of the two. We can propose formed teams, or just sign in and let him make the selection.
Mad-bax is going to have the final word on teams composition in any case, I guess.
Of course, there will be a number of procedural issues to refine and consolidate if the interest on SGOTM stays as high as it appears to be right now (
). I think everyone's feedback from this game will help a lot in establishing some support to this thing (well, at least I hope ).

Since AW+5CC is a rather specific type of game, it would be difficult to assign players to that condition by mad-bax. People should then specifically indicate that 5CC+AW going for Conquest (and RBC rules) is OK for them. May be, most would prefer just to play straight game without something brutal. It would be great if there are 5 people willing to play that. Got 3 so far. If total would be 4, we can play then. If 4th player does not show up, we would have to go with other teams.
Edited: Re PTW and Civ3. It should be discussed. PTW has some advantages with upgrade paths in general but not for Persia except guerilla. Typically, there are 3-4 guerilla units in the game and the issue is not so improtant IMO. If played by RBC rules, worker purchases on Regent may not be allowed probably to 500AD, so nothing there as well. Don't know about scientific civilization bonuses. Depends on how many of these are in the game. Other things may be not so important.

IMO, everyone who wants will play. Teams can be 4-6 players which adds flexibility.

If you bought the game yesterday you may be on a team with one of the best players in the world. This is kind of the whole point in my view.
I am keeping track of who wants what and who has played with who, and what everyones GOTM results are and if they haven't played GOTM then what other SG's they've played and if I'm still not sure I've PM'd them to find out what level they play if they have a cat I know which brand of cat food those that express a preference would choose... So akots and others need not worry. The 5CC AW team will be filled as will all the others. MAy have 7 or 8 teams this time round since I'm keeping teams down to 4 or 5 members.

Dear all, I follow Babilonian SG of 3 teams (play shadow game myself) and like your discussions very much. I'd like to participate with team who will play civ 1.29f (if any). (I have PTW but do not like it and allways play Civ3). I can play 5CC and/or AW but AW+RBC+5cc looks too difficult. May be it is OK at Regent, I did not play Regent for years. I prefer 5CC without other restrictions and would go to space or Diplo win.

If you have not played Regent for years, sounds like AW+5CC+RBC is the right variant for you.

I'll just use multitool to convert the save to a bic, use the ptw editor to convert the bic to a bix and regenerate the start in PTW.
It works I think. If it doesn't, then I'll just look stupid... but I'm used to that. I'll try it this afternoon.

It would be such a great fun to see Aeson playing Regent! Why not? It is first GOTM after all. Kind of a milestone. IMHO, if it is possible to organize that dream-team, they should go for OCC+AW+Diplo victory.

Thats almost 30 players that have expressed an interest in playing . Are the numbers per team going to flexible or are you going to fix them at 4 or 5 M.B? I think you or Offa has already mentioned that this map may be more suitable for smaller teams so that everyone gets significant playing time.
By the looks of things there could be as many as ten or more teams competeing this time around. What about giving out other awards similar to the GOTM proper to keep players interested ? Having just "won" the bronze with Roster C I'm keen to add to the trophy cabinet
