SGOTM8 - Bede

Do you just stack up some cats and archers, with maybe some spearmen for defence and have at em? In my own games, although I have yet to try it, I have thought of having separate stacks of say, horsemen, then cats with some spears or archers, and attacking in waves with the cats first, archers, then finishing with horsemen perhaps.

The game rewards concentration of force so first thing is keep the troops together if you are marching on an enemy city. Do not chase stray AI troops unless they are cripples and you can get the attacker back into the stack after it is victorious.

Best attack sequence is cats/trebs/cannons/artillery first, then fast movers (horsemen/chariots/knights/cavalry), then finish with the slowest mover. The ideal assault wounds all the defenders with artillery, kills all but one with the fast movers and the ground pounder takes the city. The wounded move into garrison and quell resistance and the healthy slow movers stay in position to cover the artillery.

Whether to raze or keep is both a tactical and strategic decision outside the scope of the article. :D

Thisw getting to be like herding waterbeetles:

SpikeIt - up and gets to finish the Greek war
residuetiger - on deck
juballs2001
Bede - stung the Chinese, now what about the Greeks?
Ghostwind - autoskip till heard from
azzaman - took the skip

The team does seem to be having its share of RL issues.. Not too far behind at this point but it would be good to get a couple sets in soon.

I apoligize again for my unexpected absence, but I'll be ready to go after Spike finishes his set. I'm kinda itching to kick some butt.

P.S. Can we check out the first spoiler forum yet?

P.S.S. Where is everybody?

Wow. Just got back into town and see that I'm up. I have some catching up to do reading what happened. I expect to get churning tomorrow. Seems there have been a few skips a happening...

Anyhow. Got it!

Edit... Hmmm quick reading sees we are now fighting the Greeks instead of the Chinese. That doesn't bode well. The Greeks have those hoplites still. Sounds painful.

Its taking a bit longer to get things in order at home after my vacation. I'll start tonight, but likely won't finish until tomorrow. I hope that's not a problem.

Okay. Decision time for the team. I'm 5 turns in. Delphi is no more. The Greeks are bringing minimal troops so far. I can talk peace with them, but we'll have to pay a bit. We have 11 turns on our deal with China. I really think we need to have a go again at China ASAP while their offensive capabilities aren't too overwhelming. To continue to war with the Greeks will only mean fending off meandering troops. We really cannot bring the war north without signing an ROP with China committing us to more peace.

So, what's does anybody think?
1) Sign ROP and take the battle north to give us some not so easily defended cities.
2) Make peace with Greeks asap and ready the troops for Beijing in 11.

I'll finish up tomorrow.

Another question. Research. We still have it shut off (I believe I shut it off on my previous round). We're lagging everyone by at least Mono and Feudalism. England still lacks Engineering, but everyone knows that as well. Are we pinning our hopes onto capturing China's Great Library to catch up, or should we at least continue research on Engineering so we can work toward <shiver> longbows? Thoughts?

Resuming the Chinese wars would be best. If we connect up that second gem source and a second dye, I wonder if we could find someone with iron who would trade.

Sadly, at last look there was no iron to trade for. I was thinking along the same lines and will at least have a city in place to grab more dyes. I'll have to look into connecting more gems as well. Most of our workers are buried in the jungles.

i think getting bejing from china should be priority 1. greece is just a nusence to us.

china who houses one of the biggest cultural centers must be taken down.

we need bejing that was while research is turned off, we dont fall behind, this will give us the time we need to become a solid monarchy/republic
and prepare for all out war against greece and china.

if we can capture quickly, we may learn chivalry and prepare to build knights templar which would help a lot. a trebuchet crusader spearman army could be very useful in a quick sneak attack on any major town.

The knights templar would be nice, but other civs are already building it, including Greece. We are defending against Greek knights now. Its pretty clear our priority should be China. But when? We have 11 turns on a peace deal with them right now. We are also recieving gpt for this deal. I presume we wait the 11 turns before taking Beijing.

Speaking of governments, we only know Republic at the moment. Revolting to republic could very well bankrupt us. Monarchy wouldn't be bad, but alas we don't know it. If I make peace now I do have 11 turns to switch governments presuming we wait the full 11 for the peace terms to expire.

Notes:
At war with Vikings, Rome and Greece. Besides a small war right now with Greece, I'm figuring we try and settle before we get run over with MDI's. We need to replace Maui.

We have a nice stack of archers and 'pults. Delphi or bust.

[0] 250AD
Don't change a thing right now. We are building d-men and ducts.

IBT
The MDI at Resiopolis is dies attacking. Rome will talk but aren't being reasonable.

[1] 260AD
Just some troop movement

IBT
Two MDI's pop out of Delphi.

[2] 270AD
One archer dies attack rogue MDI. 2nd clear him. We're attacking strays to protect workers. 'pults redline the other MDI and our elite archer takes him out. We head to Delphi next turn.

IBT
A Greek archer is sighted.

[3] 280AD
More movement. Approach Delphi.

IBT
A greek knight appears outside Chatham. And a galley sets sail from Delphi.

[4] 290AD
At Delphi, we bombard two hoplites to red. Two elite archers wins and Delphi is ours. We raze and will replace. The rest of our stack heads back north.
We bombard the knight outside Chatham. Only one 'pult their so we'll have to defend.

IBT
The Knight retreats and a sword and archer replace him.
Greece will talk, but we'll have to pay. Our choices are... 1) settle now and ready the battle again versus China. 2) we can bring the battle north, but we have to travel through China, which require an ROP, which then puts us into waiting 20 for China again.

[5] 300AD
Ocean City is founded to replace Maui and starts a 'pult.
60 gold buys us peace with Greece, getting us out of a war we didn't need. We'll build up for China again.
Time to set us up for another go at China - in 11.

IBT
The Vikings land a spear/warrior pair at St. Louis. The Greeks start sending a settler down and they start on Sistines, plus they complete Sun Tzu in Athens. Chinese start on Sistines. Japanese start Leonardos. Japanese complete Knights Templar. At least its not on our land mass.

[6] 310AD
I move troops to handle Vikings and start blocking settlers from the north.
Oh. We have a slave heading south to colonize more gems.
Son of a b**&#. Barb camp popped up next to workers chopping? I move warrior out of Ocean City to protect until I can get an archer or two there.

IBT
Viking warrior attacks and falls. Spear runs away.
Rome and China start Leos.

[7] 320AD
Warrior clears barb camp. Bombard Viking spear and clear with elite archer.

IBT
Rome wants to talk. They'll take peace for 100 gold. Apparently our army has suffered much in this war. Um, where exactly are the Roman troops? Bah, go away.
In my weed move of the game I put a nice stack of workers next to a barb. Um, they are no more.

[8] 330AD
I clear the offending barb.
Just a thought. If Vikings have invention, they'll have beserkers. We should be ready to defend our cities soon.

IBT
Vikings land an archer.

[9] 340AD
We bombard and clear the archer.
Cape May is founded on the dye delta.
I bombard the Viking galley for good measure too.

IBT
Japanese want to trade territory maps.

[10] 350AD
Moving troops north to ready for China again.

The SAVE

REpublic will definitely bankrupt us. Need to end some wars and concentrate on China. And ask the Greeks to help.

Nice progress. Too bad about the workers.

Roster check:

residuetiger - up
juballs2001 - on deck
Bede - stung the Chinese, now what about the Greeks?
Ghostwind - autoskip till heard from
azzaman - took the skip
SpikeIt - ended the Greek War

Regarding Chinese - our not so wise military advisor said we are strong compared to the Chinese. I don't believe they have iron yet which is still a plus. I imagine they have chivalry though. Please refresh my memory - do Chinese riders require iron?

I pumped out a few settler to fill in the jungle. One is enroute to fill in on coast south of Cape May. We have at least one spare, but we'll need more to help fill in the Chinese front as we move along.
