The Save
It is going to be a bloddy march on Beijing, coming in from the NW with no spears to provide cover.
I can buy my way out of the war with Rome and pick up Engineering for 200g+2gpt, a decent discount from beaker cost. Engineering plus some Dyes gets us Monontheism from from England plus 10g and her World Map.
Then send the Archers and cats on Canton and whip a settler out of Westchesterton for the horses.
The Romans are building Copernicus.
The Chinese make no counterattack and the strongest defender at Canton is a spear.
By 560 we are at the gates of Canton with archers and cats. And in 570 it goes down like a house of cards to six cats and two archers, no casualties. Burn the town and the rest of the stack moves on toward Beijing while the settler and escort head toward the horse colony.
Xinjan flips away.
In 580 Xinjan shows two muskets in the garrison but there are only three archers and a cat in position to take it back. So wait. Move forward on Beijing and found Memphis in a truly awful place to claim the horses.
By 590 we are at the gates of Beijing, on a hill, pop12, defended by a musket. And the Chinese build Copernicus in Beijing.
Xinjan now has a Longbow in the garrison and the two cats do little so we wait. Horsemen are on their way to Beijing. The Chinese longbow sorties out of Xinjan and dies.
In 610 wound both defenders at Xinjan with cat fire and lose three archers killing one. Cats count coup on four Chinese muskets in Beijing. Lose two archers but the Great Library is now ours. It should hold for at least a turn then goes to the torch.
And here comes the knowledge:
Monarchy
Feudalism
Theology
Chivalry
Invention
Education
Gunpowder
Banking
Astronomy
Chemistry
Metallurgy
Just for your information the flip chance at Beijing is 100-200%, so move out the forces and get out the torch.
Move on Nanking and in 630 the town is torched, defended as it was by only two spears. The archers and cats move back to the center.
Xinjan's muskets still hold. Whip another settler out of St Louis. The Greeks are crossing into the now empty lands. Looks like no rest for the wicked.
Take Xinjan and 55g from Mao for a Peace Treaty. Then abandon the town and build Los Angeles next to the rubble.
Next step is to throw the country into anarchy and draw eight turns with starvation in a lot of places. Then buy silks from Rome for Dyes and Gems and Wines from Greece for Chemistry. That averts starvation everywhere but Atlantic City, Oh, well.
I'll carry through the anarchy and another two turns so no one else must bear it...
In 660 trade Dyes and 126 to Japan for Ivory. Then get the 126 back for Metallurgy. We now have five luxes in the bin and could conceivably afford Republic with markets.
Caesar extorts 27g but I get that back from Liz and get Incense in the deal plus her World Maps.
In 670 found Kansas City trying to poach some horses from the Greek. The New Jersey towns pitch a fit however and riot even with all the luxes. Japan completes Leonardo's.
Our new government will be a Monarchy as we just don't have the infrastructure to support a Republic. And I think we need to give up on the idea of being the tech leader and just bull our way to the knowledge we need, and for that we need a war makers government. We still need to clear the Greeks out off the continent and support huge garrisons in the flippable towns.
In 710 we become a Monarchy, the Greeks finish Sistine's and start Bach's.
And the horse poop hits the fan as war between England and Rome and Japan breaks the trade route to England. There is a coastal passage which must be blocked by a Japanese galley out of Matsuyama. But I can still trade Liz Metallurgy for Music Theory, which I can use to pry Furs out of Julius plus another 100g.
In 720 Athens gets Sistine and Rome gets Bach's. Opened an emabssy with England and Rome just to keep tabs on the oppo
From 720 to 750 build some horsemen and get ready for the march on Greece, which should come soon. They owe us Wines but that should not be a problem. There are large stacks of cats and horsemen lining up in the north, along with some spears. The toughest they are going to have are maces and pikes (no saltpeter and none to buy that I can find).
Take Thessalonica first then move on Athens, but always have a settler in reserve to build an outpost in the empty lands. Just make sure there are cats and horses in reserve to deal with any strikes from the Grecian east.
We need culture badly but I have no idea how to get it and still claim the continent. Maybe the best thing is to forget culture and science and just push ahead with the wars.
So go beat up on some Greeks before those towns convert to Grecian ownership.
A little culture shock
Keep your eyes open on the luxury deals, and keep them renewed, we don't want any of them going to the opposition.
Don't be afraid to threaten war if you need to make a per turn deal. The rep is now busted so that will be the only way. Another thing to consider is an alliance with Rome against whoever their enemy might be at the moment. That usually makes trading credit good so long as you have a common enemy and Rome appears to be the head and shoulders leader right now.
Ghostwind - up
azzaman - claim it if GW doesn't check in in 24
SpikeIt - gets to fight the Greeks again I think
residuetiger - Chinese Round 2
juballs2001 - got us some horses, no?
Bede - drove the Chinese off the island and got us caught up in knowledge, if not much else.
