SGOTM8 - Xteam

As a BTW: I need to start low on the roster for the next sgotm cause a vicious e-mail virus has disabled my internet conn.
I thought I was safe behind a hardware + a software firewall

Lurker Comments?
lurker's comment: Well, since you ask so nicely. :)
It seems the only way to get pushed off the island is if there are no tiles on the same landmass to get pushed to. Others have tried and failed as well. Of course you could always gift away all your holdings on the English continent (and make sure all tiles are covered) but then you'd have the problem of getting back again... ;)

I don't think I'm being spoilerish since I doubt you would have tried again, and may the moderators take me if I am. :mischief: But they would, wouldn't they?

No, I don't think it's spoilerish. Sorry it didn't work our for you, Captain.

It's entirely up to you guys whether you finish the game or not, but this is exactly the kind of converstation that I referred to in my poll question about the progress charts. If you didn't have visibility of the other teams' progress you would finish the game, and later discover you'd not won the laurels, but feel some satisfaction in having accomplished the task. You'd also find out how to make best use of adv.flight/helicopters, which was one of the rare opportunities afforded by this variant.

I actually voted for earlier cut-off date, partly because it's pretty easy to see when the teams accomplish their goal.

That said, as long as we tried so hard to win this one without going to adv. flight, it doesn't take a clairvoyant to come to the conclusion that we were beaten when our approach to the game didn't work.

While I understand your point, I'm not so sure the graphs made us ask the question concerning the time needed to finish or not. We have all played most of these games and many GOTM's. I think we are aware of the caliber of our friendly competition and of the flow of the game.

While the goal that you and Gyathaar, as designers of the game, set for use of heli's and flight was not met by our team, we developed other goals. We chose a high risk strategy and made a concious decision to try to complete the game before the Industrial Age, i.e. not to use Heli's, etc. It is now 1515 AD and I think we know, rather through experience, that, while we would be able to win this game eventually, we certainly will not achieve a date that will garner us any laurels. The painful part for us is coming to terms with our failure to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.

While we have not met our primary goal, we have learned that it is possible to jump water gaps without boats and without flight. Given more time and practice, we may have developed a technique to "get ahead of the RNG". So, to the point, I don't think the information available to us, in and of itself, has been the reason we are questioning our current status.

Good try, Gator!

I say let's let the game rest. If a majority of the team wants to push on, though, I'll go along.

I should also note that I'll have limited internet access until Sunday; I don't know how much I'll be able to participate in any discussions.

I offer to challenge the RNG one last time :p then let it rest.

Nice try, gator. :)

Sorry, this is a double. :)

What about a SGOTM9 testgame? Maybe we could pass around some accelerated production tiny map game with brief reports letting India win? :crazyeye: :)

I guess it is decision time.

There is no doubt that we can win the game and since we are no longer in competition for the laurel and fast approaching a time limit finish to our game, is there any point in pushing forward?

Nice try, though Gator. I'm sooo ready to let this slide now

It sounds pretty clear to me that we are ready to throw in the towel?

Just want to confirm before I say for sure... :crazyeye:

Is there any objection to a last ditch effort if anyone wants to give it a try?

I still have the temporary cable connection at the house and apparently our recent rainy weather has affected it. This is the first time I've been able to connect since my last post. The cable company is suppose to be here tomorrow to run another temporary line.

@Niklas - I almost did the gifting of the entire continent but I would have needed more settlers to fill in the gaps. and then there would have been no safe place to leave some troops on that land mass. So we would have handed over complete control of 1 continent to ggain control of another.

@AlanH - I liked the variant very much and I do not feel deprived by us not using helicopters. As leif said we choose to go down a different road and we hit a road block. We knew almost everyone would make the tech race the top priority, so it was actually fun to try something different. I have to say I think I learned more in this game using our strategy than I would have learned had we got in the tech race. Just like to say this was another fun SGOTM. :)

@Team - I'm not opposed to a test game, but we don't want to tip our hand on any good strategies.

Only if he has his playing beverage in hand.

BTW, how's the tooth doing leif? My eye is healing nicely, so I'm losing that excuse for missing work ;).

Glad to hear your eye is in good, or shall I say better, shape. It is doing better than my tooth!! :mischief: Now I'm a toothless tiger.

I had it removed on Monday. :aargh: :thumbdown It was one of my big molars, way in the back. It was cracked and they couldn't do anything to save it. Just as well, but I'll be glad when the hole fills in and life gets back to normal, as I am sure you will.

Think we'll be in shape for SGOTM09? :hammer: :spank:

How that? Did you bite on something??

Klarius isn't getting on we we still have more territory than anybody else. We could give it a last try. I'd play it out if gator doesn't want to commence. Just post the save.

The theory is that it must have happened many years ago. The nerve was pretty far from the crack and, over the years, the tooth decayed through the crack and only now reached the nerve. They drilled it out first and found the crack, then said it had to come out.

If you get tired of working with it, I would be willing to take a shot at it for a while as well. :crazyeye:

Here's the save. I did no propaganda activities during my troop jump attempt and have spent most of our money buying cannons to take on the dreaded Viking spears, since our jump was unsuccessful.

One good thing about all the land the VIKs have now is that we might be able to sue for their remaining island city while they have a large number of cities on the mainland. So I'd declare on them immediately take a city or two and wait for peace before recapturing the bulk of the gifted cities.

I've got a Gator game this weekend and will probably have to work Sunday, so I don't think I'd have much time to play.

Umm! Why aren't you passing the save along via the SGOTM upload page?
