Shall we play a game?

Cathy is only 1 tech away from elephants as well. I would strike at Yaroslav first (or cut off the roads) to limit her elephant protection while going for her more developed cities.

Finished my turn set for the day. It seems to be going well although I made a couple bad decisions during my war with Cathy, mainly halting troop production too early to build a couple markets.

civ4screenshot0034fk1.jpg

I started off with making the recommended currency trade. I should have seen this two turns ago.

civ4screenshot0035yx6.jpg

I decided to get Cathy's last tech before the invasion. It seems like a fair trade. Hopefully I can get a lvl 3 unit after the war so I can build the heroic epic. I'd rather not waste a GG just to build it.

civ4screenshot0036cf1.jpg

And so it begins!

The plan was to send the first wave to Rostov. Then send a second group to Yaroslavl to capture Cathy's ivory. Then march to St. Petersberg and Moscow.

civ4screenshot0037kd6.jpg

I made this trade to help fund the war effort.

civ4screenshot0038gw8.jpg

I finished researching CS, so I made a civics switch to Bureaucracy as well as org religion. Org religion so I could quickly build some missionaries for my new cities and build up the infrastructure there. I would prefer theocracy but no one would trade it to me.

civ4screenshot0039cc9.jpg

I took Rostov with zero troop loss and gave my elephant a medic promotion to quickly heal before I moved on to St. Petersberg.

civ4screenshot0043yk1.jpg

Hatty made this trade with me. I think she still tolerates me because I'm running her favorite civic. She been a better friend that Roosevelt anyway. That punk is a tightwad! And we even share the same religion!

civ4screenshot0045pc9.jpg

Yaroslavl fell. I barely had enough troops to take it and actually thought I wouldn't be able to.

civ4screenshot0046ca1.jpg

I moved on to St Petersberg and met a city defender 3 longbow on a hill. It wasn't pleasant and it took way too many troops to take him out. I did get a GG for my efforts.

civ4screenshot0047lq6.jpg

I barely managed to take the city and got a cease fire with Cathy. I wouldn't be surprised if she attacked first coming out of the cease fire.

civ4screenshot0049ts9.jpg

Here's how things stand now. I need to build 3 settlers to build two cities between Rostov and Yaroslavl and another close by the capital by the incense. Another 5 workers would be helpful too.

I have a GG that I don't know what to do with and I now have no army.

I really want to take out Roosevelt for the GLighthouse and be able to use it before it obsoletes. I also need to finish off Cathy.

Also, once I finish Engineering, I'm focusing research on Liberalsim.

Any suggestions?

That's close to what I ended up doing.

Seems like you are having hard time with cathy too!

I kept on playing, got Liberalism easily. I picked Nationalism, but coulnd't finish TM, as unknown civ built it! Then I was stuck in endless war. I had almost finished with Cathy, when Monty decides to attack me too! I killed his endless stacks of obsolete units finally, but I think that domination is out of question. I just see that Hatty has artillery, infantry etc. and I have only lots of cavalry and trebs, and only some grenadiers.

I'll post my game when you have met the last opponent.

Did you start the game from the beginning or from a later save?

Why do you need the extra cities near Rostov and Yaroslavl? So far it looks great. If you can build up an extra army then you propably could take out Moscow next. Great game so far.

I started from your save, 1000BC IIRC. You had a good start!

Thanks. I'm a couple turns from paper so I think I'll find out who the mystery civ is soon.

Why not? One would be nothing but cottages and the other could work two gems. I agree that building all three cities now would be a mistake but I already started one settler so I'll settle him before going on to Moscow.

Hatty beat me to Liberalsim by 2 turns all because Cathy wouldn't trade me Philo. She took Astronomy. 940 AD.

Other than that setback, things are going pretty well. I should be able to finish off Cathy around the time I get grenadiers.

I'll post the round later.

Hatty got liberalism in 940 AD at normal speed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cripes, what kind of super land does she own. That is totally crazy. Even Mansa the tech whore usually needs time to 1100 ad. That is incredible bad luck. I guess no GS then to bulb philo? Bummer. Keep the game going. This is very interesting.

I've had carthage getting liberalism in 560 AD in an immortal game. True, I had to gift him philosophy for peace, which helped him out.

That's exactly what I thought... I wish you had better luck!

What are you going to do with Monty?

Monty is allied with me in my war against Cathy. Unless she becomes his vassal he'll likely stay out of my way until I attack him.

I really had no city with a big food surplus to run scientists other than my capital and I needed it to focus on troop production. I could have gone for the GL like Civseta but I wanted to go to war first.

That is still way too early. He must have had a huge landmass or he never went to war to tech that quickly.

both!
he was alone on his large and good peninsula, was trading peacefully with most AIs (and me for a while), then to prevent him from running away, I attacked him and got whipped out. He took 2 cities from me, good ones he used to tech even faster, and I had to sue for peace (giving him philo) to save my life (temporarily! he back back with a vengeance later and I lost).

One spoiler, don't read it Pete!

Spoiler :
After that speculation, I think that everyone should know right now which one is the last civ and where it is located...

Overall this is a boring round that ends with me getting beat to Liberalism. Apologies in advance.

civ4screenshot0050cl4.jpg

Fred still liked me so I continued to trade with him. Cathy also agreed to sign an open borders agreement with me. Go me! She had Philo but it was redded out.

civ4screenshot0051ip5.jpg

I settled the GG in the capital so I could build some decent troops. I finished Engineering and tried to trade it to Cathy for Philo. She declined. I guess she was researching it as well. So that forced me to self research Philo which took at least 4 turns. Not good.

civ4screenshot0052ux5.jpg

Every round I checked for trade opportunities. I begged gold from everyone and made bad trades so I could get cash and run my slider as high as I could.

civ4screenshot0053zn6.jpg

Eventually all my trading partners ran out of gold so I decide to make money the old fashioned way.

civ4screenshot0054py8.jpg

I brought in a war ally. Fred was cheap and could distract Cathy a bit. Plus it would probably make it less likely for Monty to declare on me if I have a war ally.

civ4screenshot0055ar3.jpg

I didn't go for Moscow directly. I didn't have enough troops to defend St. Petersburg and take the capital. So I went after her peripheral cities first while I continued to build more units.

civ4screenshot0057sg1.jpg

Monty decided Fred and I were having too much fun without him so he decided to join the war. That made me pretty happy (look at the stupid grin on my face).

civ4screenshot0058zi6.jpg

I was running the slider at 100% but Hatty was still kicking my ass to Liberalism. I tried to bring her into the war as well but she wasn't interested. Stupid peacenik.

civ4screenshot0059gb5.jpg

I continued making one-sided trades for cash. I'm taking Roosevelt out next anyway so I doesn't matter if he gets this early.

civ4screenshot0061yi6.jpg

That trade gave me a complete world map and it looks like the unknown civ is Mansa. Fantastic! Just what I need. It also looks like Hatty is #1 in land and in tech. Good thing my gunpowder troops will be the strongest in this game.

I next sold Hatty my world map for 230 gold.

civ4screenshot0063ma0.jpg

And she took the prize in 940 AD. I blame Cathy for this mess.

civ4screenshot0065ha0.jpg

I took Yakutsk and ended my turn. I should be able to finish Cathy off this next round and maybe even start on Roosevelt.

I started my shadow game from 1000BC save. I only wanted to try if building GL was a right strategy in that situation. And the start was great anyway, I probably couldn't get better start.

Well, here is the game. Cathy started to be the traditional nice girl and asked me some tech. No way!
Civ4ScreenShot0000a.jpg

Soon I met next opponent, Frederick. He soon converted confu. and became a long time ally.

Civ4ScreenShot0001a.jpg

I started to explore and found Monty soon. Argh!

Civ4ScreenShot0003a.jpg

I soon grabbed literature and started to build GL. Next was math, as no one was willing to trade it for me. I wanted it for chopping bonus, I was pre-chopping around capital.

Civ4ScreenShot0004a.jpg

I got it 270BC easily. Then started to build invasion army.

Civ4ScreenShot0006a.jpg

Made a nice trade with Roosevelt.

Civ4ScreenShot0009a.jpg

And finally it was time to attack Russia!

Civ4ScreenShot0011a.jpg

I got my first GS around that time and was preparing to lightbulb philo. Then I noticed something weird, it was already discovered one turn before!!! This was the point when I suspected first time that Mansa was around. I thought that he had a island of is own, though. I lightbulbed Philo anyway, as I needed it for liberalism.

Civ4ScreenShot0012a.jpg

I went for Yaroslavl first, I wanted to deny elephants from Cathy.

Civ4ScreenShot0013a.jpg

Soon I met Hatty and made a nice trade asap:

Civ4ScreenShot0015a.jpg

And more trading with Freddy:

Civ4ScreenShot0016a.jpg

Then a civic change to generate more scientist soon. This had a negative impact to my war, but I thought that winning liberalism race was more important on the long run. I changed back soon after I had generated GS, it didn't take long!

Civ4ScreenShot0017a.jpg

New York wanted to be Korean!

Civ4ScreenShot0018a.jpg

Roosevelt didn't mind about me taking his city, he wanted to trade.

Civ4ScreenShot0019a.jpg

More trading, with Hatty this time. I wanted to take advantage of getting CS first.

Civ4ScreenShot0020a.jpg

Continued on next post...

Continued from the last post...

One more trade with Roosevelt, I wanted trebs because our UU had hard time attacking LBs.

Civ4ScreenShot0021a.jpg

I traded philo away as everyone already had it. I wanted music asap to start MT as soon as I reach liberalism. Hatty traded me her map and I realized that Mansa was in a game. That was frightening sight and I feared that I might not be #1 at liberalism.

Civ4ScreenShot0022a.jpg

Roosevelt liked me so much he gave me compass!

Civ4ScreenShot0024a.jpg

I was first on Liberalism! I asked money from everyone and made some stupid trades, but I got enough money to research liberalism in 7 turns instead of expected 15 turns. I picked nationalism and planned to build TM soon. But it was already built! It made me nervous, because researching nationalism by normal way needs some effort. Mansa must be very advanced!

Civ4ScreenShot0025a.jpg

Cathy had only one city left. She was willing to capitulate, but I thought she would be a lousy vassal. I decided to capture her last city instead. Monty had declared her war some turns before, and I didn't want her to capitulate to Aztecs.

Civ4ScreenShot0026a.jpg

I soon had more things to worry about, Monty decided to attack me! He had a huge stack of obsolete units and I had to let him capture one of my cities. I didn't had enough defenders and I thought that it's wiser to let him have the city, and then take it back with CR units. It was a good move, and after two turns massacre Monty was threat no more. I asked Roosevelt to join me and he finally captured one poorly located Azted city. That was a very first time when my war ally managed to do exactly what I wanted them to do.

Civ4ScreenShot0027a.jpg

Rest of the game is hidden just in case.

Spoiler :

It was a 300 year war even when I had two stacks advancing through Aztec territory. Finally I met Hattys troops, she attacked Monty after I had already almost finished him. I had to hurry, but I managed to capture rest of the Aztec cities before her. i was finally able to send a scout to meet Mansa. That was frightening meeting, I was really backward compared to him.

Civ4ScreenShot0028a.jpg

I had no change to invade Egypt. Look at that power graph! I thougt I was going strong, because I was ahead of her all for a long time.

Civ4ScreenShot0029a.jpg

And the techs... who wants to try domination/conquest now?

Civ4ScreenShot0030a.jpg

It seems like GL was a right choice for getting liberalism first. Until that I was doing the right thing, but after that things got complicated. I thought that I was doing fine, and I could easily beat Hatty, but I was wrong. Probably she and Mansa had a nice tech club of their own. I should have concentrated more on teching instead of building only units. Around liberalism I thought that game was already won, but that was not the case.

Here is a savegame attached if somebody is brave enough to give it a try! I think that space race win is not impossible, maybe internet beeline is the only hope.
