Update 2 – 1961

Welcome to 1969. As MAD Magazine pointed out on its cover for the March issue, this was the first "upside-up" year—i.e., one that looked the same upside down—since 1881, and the last until 6009. Here are the major events shaping your world today.

Venice falls to the Werhchmact.

The German Werhchmact, backed up with Ustiad units from Croatia began Operation Adriatic Port immediately after the decleration of war against Italy and the Med Sea Pact. Venice was captured early on after it was declared an open city by the Italian authorities, rather than letting the monuments of the city to be destroyed.

However as the Germans pushed into the Alps troubles began brewing, and soon the Croatians were forced to leave Italian soil as the Balkan Front collapsed, and while Germany still holds Venice, its holds little else.

The Balkans Front

Three days after the Croatian and German invasion of Venice the Italian Sixth Army in the Balkans began Operation Novo Dacia, the invasion of Bulgaria and Croatia, with Turkish assistance. In fact it was the Turks who were to get first blood with the quick fall of Sofia and the Bulgarian government fleeing to Belgrade in the far north.

Croatian Ustiad units were pushed back as the Italian generals began applying more pressure and the Balkan Front began collapsing. In many parts the residents Serbs greeted the Turks and Italians as liberators after the fall of the oppressive rule of Croatia and Bulgaria against their people.

The first Turkish units reached the Danube in early September and by the end of the year all of the Balkans south of the Danube was under Med. Sea Pact control.

Finland's African Gambit

The Second Army of Finland under General Mammenheim was the Finish contingent in the war against the Med. Sea Pact. The Finish Army protected by the Royal and German navies made a landing in the Ivory Coast region of Western Africa.

Within days the Italian defenders in the region, who will ill prepared and lacking confidence were driven out of the Dakar Trade Centre.

However as the push became more stringent in an attempt to link up with German forces, Finish troops began to suffer under the adverse conditions, the complete opposite to the climate that they had lived in their entire lives. Scores of soldiers died or were taken out of front line duty due to heat exhaustion, dehydration and a whole manner of desert related disease.

By the time Finish and German soldiers were shaking hands, the Finish army was in a woeful state and the Italian army which had retreated rather than electing to fight for worthless desert had begun regrouping and was looking ever more so towards the offensive.

British on the Nile

With the decleration of war against Italy and the Med Sea Pact, Britain declared support for Germany and began operations in the Sudanese plain in an attempt to enter Egypt through the back passage of the nile.

Italian forces stretched thin elsewhere in Africa, retreated the whole year however stunning manovers along the Nile Valley confined the advance and kept it away from the Red Sea. Futhermore at several battles Italian forces subjected the numerous British with heavy casualties before withdrawing to prevent themselves from being overwhelmed.

With the Brits not gaining any of their objectives this turn and already paying more than what was forecasted before the operation, Sir Oswald Mosley is having a tough time in the House of Commons as of late.

Islamic Republics Unite!

With the detonation of the first Iranian nuclear warhead, the Islamic tribal group called the Taliban in Afghanistan took power and deposed the Shah, who then went into exile in Delhi, India. By June the Taliban had entered into negotiations with the Iranian Revolutionary Government, and by September the act of Union was signed causing the international border between Iran and Afghanistan disappear and creating the United Islamic Republic.

(Iran and Afghanistan become the United Islamic Republic)

Fillipino Decleration of Independence Signed

After the defeat of the statehood for the Philipines bill in the US Senate in April, on Mindano the Fillipino Liberation Front met with the Nationalist Alliance to conclude the decleration of independence for the Republic of the Phlipines. So far majority of the islands have fallen to the new government that bases itself on Mindano island and the US stuggles to hold on to what it has, facing harsher resitance then ever expected.

Colombia No More!

After the US- Venezuelan occupation of Colombia to restore peace and order, there was a quick treaty signed stating that Colombia would be restored. However in April with the death of Comrade Gelion in Venezuela and the rise of a new Chairman to the leadership of Venezuela the deal was called off.

In August, Venezuela officially annexed with portions of Colombia it controlled, declaring itself the Socialist Republic of Grand Venezuela. In October the US was forced to do the same to the western portion of Colombia it controlled by annexing it onto the territory of Panama.

Sweden’s Future Uncertain

German and Finish leaders suffered miscommunication of the issue of Sweden this year. The Finish tried to recreate the Swedish state, however the German Reichstag approved the Furher’s annexation decree in May, seriously weakening any future Swedish state.

Swedes meanwhile continue to pour across the demarcation line into Finish controlled Sweden. In August the Finish government tried to negotiate the return of the Swedish government in exile in Washington DC. However during the negotiations a bomb was planted in the Finish embassy killing both negotiating parties. Both sides immediately claimed it was the other and broke off negotiations. The American CIA began looking for who perpetrated the bombing. Dead were the Chief Negotiator and the Prime Minister in exile of Sweden, the Finish Ambassador to the USA, the Finish Chief Negotiator and 55 other staff from both sides.

By the end of the year the Finish part of Sweden still continued to lie in limbo. Effectively run by Finland, however still nominally independent just occupied, the Swedish people have begun to grow restless with uncertainty.

(-1 Finnish stability)

Peru and Brazil move in to restore order in Chile.

With the collapse of the central government in neighbouring an allied Chile, Peru and Brazil moved in to help resotre order. A series of negotiations is planned for some time in 1962 to discuss the future of the Chilean Republic

New Uprisings in the Asia Co-prosperity Sphere

The uprisings against the Japanese in China started to die down as a new US-Japanese trade deal on food helped feed the populace of Japan and China. However the trouble had not completely gone away for Japan. There was still a rebellion in China against the Japanese for the brutal treatment the Japanese overlords subject the Chinese peasantry to. IN Indochina the Khmer Rouge have arisen in Kampucheua looking for independence and ultimately recognition from Japan. Finally several islands in the East Indies have began rebelling seeing the feeding of the Chinese people a weak action by Japan and thinking that their chance for independence may be here.

How Japan will continue to fair in the coming years lies heavily on how it regains control over these and other provinces like this.

(- 1 Japanese stability, - 7 Japanese regular div, - 140 Light Tanks, - 30 Med. Tanks, - 5 Heavy Tanks, - 45 Prop Fighters)

Republic of Georgia Declared

In Tiblisi the rebellion against the German occupation authority continued unabated with Georgian leaders meeting there to discuss moves to make the rebellion more legitimate. With the war between the Berlin Pact and the Med Sea Pact beginning, the Republic of Georgia was prepared under the Georgian Nationalist Party, and the Georgian Liberation Union.

German attempts to pacify the continuing rebellion were repulsed as German strength was diverted to help stem the collapse of the Balkan Front. So far the Republic of Turkey and the Islamic Republic have recognized the government of Georgia and have sponsored its entry into the Med. Sea Pact.

(Germany: - 7 regular div, - 1 mech div, - 50 Light tanks, - 15 prop fighters, Gerogia becomes a independent nation)

Nationalists surrender in China.

With the Nationalist held countryside seething with communist rebellion and the death of Chiang Kai-Shek from a long illness, culminated in the complete collapse of the Nationalist Army at the Battle of Yuhan and the complete rout at Wuhan. By September Nationalist central authority was all but destroyed and by October, surviving Nationalist units started announcing their surrender to the People’s Liberation Army.

It remains to be seen that with the rise in fortunes of the People’s Republic of China if the Empire of Japan will do something about the growing threat Mao Zedong poses.

(- 5 PRC div regulars - 40 PRC Light Tanks, - 40 PRC Med. Tanks, - 5 Prop Fighters - Republic of China as an independent faction)

Multiple Nuclear Tests take place – The Age of Proliferation Begins!

They got their nuclear technology through different ways but nuclear proliferation is definitely on the rise, with several more nations joining the nuclear club.

On February 5th the Soviet Federation successfully conducted its first nuclear weapons test at a facility in the Kazakh desert. Closely following the Soviet test on March 1st, the Islamic Republic of Iran tested its first nuclear warhead triggering the union with Afghanistan mentioned elsewhere. On April 11th two tests occurred that added the Republic of Turkey and the Kingdom of Portugal to the nuclear club. German scientists then oversaw the first British test in Africa on June 5th. In October 10th the Socialist Republic of Venezuela exploded its first nuclear warhead, making it the first nuclear power in South America, followed three days later by the test in the Northwest Territory, adding Canada to the growing club. Finally on December 10th, South Africa exploded its first nuclear warhead. 13 individual nations have the ability to build nuclear warheads now, is the world doomed to nuclear holocaust by the greedy actions of a few?

(+ FSSR, Iran, Turkey, Portugal, Britain, Venezuela, Canada and South Africa all become nuclear powers)

The May Trek of the Freedom Riders.

May 4 - Freedom Riders: 13 black and white students with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) leave Washington DC on 2 buses, to test integration laws in bus stations throughout the deep South.
May 14 - American civil rights movement: A Freedom Riders bus is fire-bombed near Anniston, Alabama and the civil rights protestors are beaten by an angry mob.

Meanwhile the USA brough Fiji and few other Pacific ISland territories expanding its sphere of influence

(- 1 stability for Britain, + 1 stability for both USA and Carribean )

As of yet no chemical or nuclear weapons have been used in German-Italian War. This is a good sign.

You agreed to allowing elections to take place in order to move back forward to recreating a Finnish state? We need to improve the situation there before it becomes too unstable.

Lets end this war. End your embargo and allow the Germans to decide what to do with what they wish with their colonies. Continued fighting will only lead to further needless deaths. The Suez Canal and the Middle East territories are rightfully Germany's colonies not your own. Even the great and ancient city of Venice has fallen you must cease your aggression or we will dismantle your empire.

The spread of nuclear weapons is concerning and we urge all nations to act responsible in the development and testing of such weapons.

Nice update sheep!

Warman, it is for the sake of the NES, so we don't go nuke happy like they did last time (all cities in Russia nuked, etc.).

Also, I like the fact that I got nukes w/o trying to purchase them.

IC - Canada will NOT sell nuclear EDIT: WEAPONS technology to ANYONE. We also sign all nuclear treaties (non-use of, non-sale, attacking all who use...)
