Should I auto-explore?

I was just wondering what people think about setting your warriors/scouts to auto-explore. I used to do the exploring manually, but now it's starting to get tedious. I usually only play on small maps - even standard size seems too big for me :).

So anyway, my fear for using auto - explore is that maybe my units will miss out on a goody hut thats right next to them or maybe they won't automatically go to the higher ground where they have a better view.

What do you guys think?

I agree. Auto-anything is almost certain to be inefficient. Every once in a while I'll set a frigette or something I'm not using on auto-explore just to finish mapping the oceans. But it's rarely a priority -- just hunting around for little desert islands. Who knows? Maybe you'll find Ginger and Mary Ann.

I once hit the auto-explore by accident one time. Hitting buttons by accident is something I am good at, and thankfully disband has a dialog box! But that is a different thread ... Anyways, it didn't look good: The scout had two choices. Go north into some clearly tundra tiles or go south into some hills/grassland. He chose north. I cannot recommend auto-explore.

Auto explore will go to huts automatically

SG's and SGoTM out the wazzoo, 1100+ posts and I didn't even know there was an auto-explore option.

I think I'll be playing Civ III for some time to come.

Not a good idea unless you're an Expansionist civ or playing at a very low difficulty level. The higher the level, the more likely you are to get barbs from a hut and they get stronger at each level too, so your exploring warriors will get killed.

I only do this after I am satisfied that all the areas available to my immediate early game expansion is exposed. Once that happens I can't be bothered with the manual exploreing anymore. ( no real incentive to do so,, main reason doen allready )

Don't worry, they automatically go to the higher grounf where they have a better view. And they never go to a goody hut but it's good because what if it's guarded?

Didnt know that, might be usefull with scouts?

I always auto-explore with my scouts and warriors. They finish the whole map around 950 AD, and usually with the world maps of other civs. And they do go to huts auto

Oh, well. On the higher difficulty levels, you're more likely to need the experience for the warrior ;)

Think im misunderstanding maybee. Do you mean they have an uncanny knack of finding them or that if one becomes visible they pop it?.

Also what happens when they find another civ?

Not really. The AI will not cheat to see huts under the blackness. Auto-explore units do like popping huts they see though.

I never automate anything, full stop.

By that of course you mean the AI available to the player, as the Comp seems to beeline right to them.

Most frustrating when you're Expansionist and have your scout ready to pop a hut and then some German warrior come by and pops it just ahead of you, leaving your scout to get ignobly slaughtered by the barbarians the German just stirred up.

Just thought I'd share.

BTW, any confirmation that a human player's scout on auto-explore will be able to "sense" where huts are under the blackness and head for them? If so, put them on auto once you've got your immediate neighborhood sussed out. If not, keep moving them manually till every civ has been contacted and every hut has been popped. IIRC, goodie huts will respawn in unclaimed territory just like settlements will.
