Should I get the expansions with RTW?

I'm thinking about buying RTW in the near future, but wanted to know if I should buy the expansions. And what differences do they add/change?

As far as I know, neither Barbarian Invasion nor Alexander add anything to the original game; they simply add additional campaign maps and factions to use in custom battles.

I don't think either of them are worth it.

Both of them add improved AI, but it doesn't apply to the original game. However, patches are included that would presumably be a pain to download?

Barbarian Invasion is more or less worth it, because it essentially contains a full campaign comparable (IMO better) to the vanilla game. Alex isn't, because it doesn't.

In Barbarian Invasion AI performs more naval invasions, and in Alexander AI performs better overall, and it is moddable to make some factions not attack each other.

:agree:

Buy Barbarian invasion, because a lot of cool mods which are way cooler then the expansion packs need it to run on!!!!

Some great mods need Barbarian Invasion.Besides, its sorta cool to build up the Romans in vanilla, then destory them in Barbarian Invasion

Buy barbarian invasion so you can play Fourth Age: Total War "The Wars of Men" and Viking Invasion II. Both are worth the price for a normal expansion pack.

Barbarian Invasion is good. Alexander is okay, but not great, and not very replayable. The gold edition of RTW comes with BI so you should get that.

Europa Barbarborum is a great mod for Rome.

BTW, do any of you know about EB 2's ETA?

Last I heard it was lurching along but not really going anywhere due to RL and getting too in-depth into designing the factions.

They turned out a lot of new material for previews in winter and spring 2010, which is when I last checked.

Previews yes, but I didn't recall seeing any ingame screenshots. Plus after a year of work they have what, 2.5 factions finished?

They've been putting out ingame screenshots and clips since 2009, mang.

Okay. Clearly my memory was faulty. I knew they had some stuff done with the Romans, Celts, and possibly Carthage but I didn't know to what degree.

even vanilla BI is pretty good. BUY IT. :)

edit - last I heard, EB 2 was in beta 0.4 or something

Hardly anyone plays online battles (if you like those) on the expansion pack BI. Still, Barbarian invasion is slightly more complicated than vanilla.

It´s got too many rebel places though :(. The main campaign is hard and could do with a little improving, but the battles are pure awesomeness.

Main campaign of BI is hard? I don't think you should try Invasio Barbarorvm then, you'll blow a gasket. :p
