Newbie here!Kindly advise....I am considering
getting into a Civ game but am confused.Civ2
C.T.P looks good but its got some mixed reviews from press and players. Is this a good one to start with?
Cheers

Call to Power 2 is NOT in the Civilization series. That game is developed by Activision and is very different from Civ2. You should buy Civilization II Gold instead (for less than $20).

The best one to start with is original solo version Civ2.There is a demo of civ2 at most sites. If you buy it, it will be dirt cheap. If you get it go to the home site and d/l patch 2.42.Later try to find a copy of the Fantastic Worlds add-on.

Gold edition may look like a better buy(should be dirt cheap also) but there a bug, flaw, whatever you want to call it that makes the AI very hostile. It really messes up the diplomacy aspect of the game not to mention ruining many scenarios.
I would recommend it,but only if you are interested in MULTIPLAY online. You'll also need to get a patch for that version also.Last patch is 1.3

I think Civilization 2 Test of time would be best. You get the original game. Extended original (get to play on alpha Centauri. The world of Midgard and the world of Lalande 21185.
I have this game and I think it is excellent. Also it is a reasonable price

I think you guys are unduly harsh on CTP, you might even say you have blinders on

CTP out of the box was not a good game but after the patch(es) came out and some of the players tweaked it with mods, it did hold a certain charm. One of the concepts in CTP, public works, is defintely being considered for CIV III. Plus, they listened to the players and made changes based on fan input for CTP II (which is the game CTP 1 should have been)

I still love my Civ 2 and play it much more than CTP, but CTP is a nice change of pace and gets me thinking about different ways to do things in Civ

Yeah, I know this is civ-centric site but give the devil his due

What the hell is Seat Management?

No, don't buy regular Civ II.
A.I. play does nothing to prepare you for the real world.
Go Multiplayer Gold Edition. You can still play solo against A.I. and there are Fantastic Worlds scenarios included.
Other scenarios readily available at multiple sites.
As stated above, under 20 dollars. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smokin.gif" border=0>

It's In The Way That You Use It

You just asked civfanatics all over the world which civ game was best...this is something that is personal preference...I have a certain affinity for Classic Civ II, so I wouldn't want to knock it...but the truth is that Civ II is limited and doesn't play scenarios as well as CiC or FW....then again, Test of Time is hard to write scenarios or modpacks for because the engine is a bit different, so it doesn't do much for me yet (although I have the game). I intend to buy civ2 gold to add it to my collection, so I can't really comment on that yet. If I bought CTP, it would be so that I could see if it measures up to Civ II in any way. I would like to try to write a patch for it. Well, it really has to do with what you are into. Classic Civ II isn't a bad place to start...but I would say that you will almost certainly want to buy something else in the series later on.

If that is any help, tell me in what way.
