This question was brought to the fore for me for two reasons

There was a vehicle crime in my area, and secondly my neighbor downstairs uses Cannabis and stinks up the lobby, not only that but I know who deals it or rather I know the vehicle used ( I have the license plate number)

Moral question with several off shoots:

1 Is cannabis destructive to society?

2 Does it cause things like vehicle crime?

3 Will there be blowout from this?

I don't like snitching on people so I haven't yet.

Your thoughts?

1. That's a distinct "maybe", from me. Who knows? It's just as likely it isn't as it is. What do you mean by "destructive to society"?

2. Very unlikely, imo. I've not heard of people stealing vehicles in greater numbers because they've been smoking cannabis. I've heard of people being unable, or unwilling to walk, or do much of anything at all, though.

3. You mean will someone come round and break your legs for dobbing them in? Nah. Probably not.

But if I were you, I'd probably not bother doing anything. If the place stinks as badly as you say, it's only a matter of time before they're caught anyway. If you know the number of the vehicle, the chances are the police do too. Chances are the police have got what they consider more important things to do.

If it were a meth-addict, though, I might well feel differently.

Still, how big a trade do you estimate they're doing? They're not actually dealing from your house, but simply delivering to a customer, right?

The only time I would do it is if somebody was dealing in my apartment building or next door, and the smell/commotion was causing problems in my own living space. I've done that for pot use as well.

I couldn't care less if people smoke pot, but when it begins to infringe on my ability to have a quiet (and free-of-odor) apartment, then I get mad.

To clarify 2: people steal to fund their habit, oh it was theft from vehicle I should have said sorry

I can't see anyone stealing to fund a cannabis habit. It's just not that expensive, as far as I know. Nor is it particularly addictive.

What kind of area do you live in, though?

Centre of town near the pubs

Its alright I suppose its in the Midlands of the UK, ive been in worse

Report to who? You can make a complaint about neighbors anyways. your choice if that is with property owner, the neighbors, police, whatever. You probably do not have grounds for any police involvement, morally at least

the suspected dealer is also your choice

Well, I can't see the area makes any difference as to whether you tell the police or not, come to think of it.

As for the moral issue, does a person have a moral duty to report a crime (and smoking cannabis is against the law in the UK), or any crime, to the police?

This is more or less my stance on the issue. Although I gave up on trying to report it, because every time I did report it in my area, the police would say they would send an officer and they would never show up. So obviously, the police in my area don't give a damn so I don't either.

Agree with DT/Commodore, only if it's interfering with my ability to get on with my day.

Also, I don't wish an encounter with the cops on most people. Especially with nonviolent people who are chilling on the herb. I hear it's better in the UK, though, so you probably won't end up with a dead body on your hands after a midnight raid.

I don't get the suspicion that the guys on weed did the vehicle crime. Weed mellows people out.

There are people who are employed for the purpose of law enforcement. If you aren't, don't.

Ah but how will they know about if I don't tell them....

I have trouble believing anyone stole to fund their pot habit. I wouldn't report anyone for pot unless it were disrupting life.

The only thing I am really sure I would report my neighbors for is serial murder. If a person can't find a better way to deal with neighbors being disruptive than calling the cops they need to be a hermit.

So a one-off murder is no biggie? ;)

If a neighbor were dealing drugs, the amount of traffic and unsavory characters that can bring to the neighborhood can certainly be a negative.

The guy next door to my parents was dealing. I told him that if anything disappeared around my parents house I was not going to root among his clientele looking for it, I was just going to hold him responsible to either return it, replace it, or suffer for it. His clients were uniformly respectful of my mother and her property.

I think the criminalization of cannabis is more destructive. The caveat is that we should help convince teens and young adults to delay consumption, since that's where we see the observable damage.

You should drop the dime on a dealer if he's bringing down your neighbourhood, since he might be scummy in other ways. OR if he's a piece of trash (i.e., violent). If he's merely a dealer who doesn't work 'cause he makes money dealing ... ehn.

Write your politician saying you think it should be decriminalized.
