If one of my neighbors goes insane and burns down my home I won't have to deal with him/her anymore in any case.

For the record, "getting the rat even if it takes burning the woodpile" was a metaphor. Arson is not my gig.

Also for the record, I do not consider meeting violence with violence to be insane at all.

The thing with cops investigating noise complaints is that noise complaints are boring. Non-criminal drug use is boring. But if you know what you just said, cops know what you just said, and trying to figure out if you have enough baggies or substances in your house that you can be categorized as being in distribution? Now that is more exciting. If somebody is having a party there are enough people in this country that smoke dope that I figure the odds aren't bad that somebody at that place has wacky weed or whippets or something they "shouldn't be doing." If they simply won't keep the noise to a reasonable level after being asked to, sure, an official complaint might be warranted. But in that situation they've at least had the warning shot to put their recreationals away if they don't want Barney calling for backup so he can search their place.

I suppose this is my fault. :) In my original post, I made the assumption that NC was a non-pothead telling on his pot dealing neighbors for giving him a noise complaint, maybe after doing loud non-pothead things like playing Counter-Strike or watching hardcore pornography that bears audible resemblance to domestic violence. I did not realize that someone else could make the same assumption, but with the condition that NC is in fact a pothead. However, I doubt this to be true, given NC's stated belief that pot is destructive to society.

I agree with your quoted post most sincerely. I would almost never call the cops on anyone unless I suspected violence, theft, sexual assault or child abuse. Most often, the police it seems make situations worse, not better. The overarching philosophy should be "no victim, no crime". I've dealt with loud neighbors before, and of course the solution is almost always to talk it out.

Further questions I have after rereading these posts:

1. Yes, but criminalization is far worse.
2. No.
3. Depends on the situation, it won't make you friends. But it's unlikely anybody will come cap your knee.

Personally I wouldn't unless it was directly disrupting your living space. All that said if they ever called a noise complaint on me I would rat them out in an instant.

You say that cannabis is destructive to society. Why?

And the people who are affected by it? I guess they don't matter, so it should be just perfectly fine if my neighbor decides to make everyone else in this wing of the building miserable.

My opinion about smoking anything: Fine, as long as you do it in an enclosed environment that doesn't let any smoke, vapors, smells, or other pollution into the outer environment. You can poison your body all you want. You don't have the right to poison mine.

And yes, I'd report any illegal drug dealing I knew about.

Would you report a close friend or family member if you found out they were using/dealing drugs? Wouldn't you rather at least have a talk with them first, maybe tell them your honest feelings about how they are making a bad choice to use/sell drugs? Would your response depend or not depend on which drugs were being used/sold?

For those who'd report a pot dealer, how do you feel about tobacco, alcohol, and pharma dealers?

Yes, I know those are legal... I'm curious about your moral argument. I cannot understand how you can put the pot dealer in a cage while other drug dealers remain free.

If a tobacconist or a bartender was causing my hallway to smell like a skunk then, yeah, I probably would.

Yeah, I mean, if someone got sprayed by a skunk and walked through my hallway, I would totally report them. I mean I could just talk it out with them, maybe suggest taking a shower, but why do that when I can make a mountain out of a molehill?

It's interesting, but I think what distinguishes your skunk example is that one is forgiven because it's clearly accidental (the skunk) and the other is disparaged because it's deliberately rude.

I can tell you're late to the thread.

Isn't "skunk" what the "kids" are "calling" "the" marihuana?

In evaluating whether or not to call the police, I would think that whether or not the independent small business owner was in my hallway would be a significant factor.

Should I care if they are in your hallway?

Eh, I don't think people smoking pot in apartment complexes deliberately stink up their hallway, it's more so a mistake on their part. Sometimes it's hard to be aware of it if it's not brought to your attention. They might think that the fan in their window is keeping the smell down when in fact it isn't.

I lived in the dorms once and people would stink up the hallway with pot smell not because they were smoking pot, but because the pot they had was such high quality that it reeked even without being lit on fire. They would take these buds out of their stash to look at or admire, and 5 minutes later the RA would knock on their door.

Well, nothing lets them know that they're stinking up the place better than letting them know!

Exactly! No need to get the police involved.

I can't wait until legalization in Oregon goes into full effect this summer. No doubt this sort of neighborly bickering will flare up a lot at first. People will call the cops on their neighbors, and the cops will have to tell them there is nothing they can legally do about it, and to not waste their time any further with these complaints in the future.:D::goodjob:

Yeah, but if my boss and his wife are coming over for a hot game of auction pinochle and your dobbie is reeking up the foyer, that'd really harsh my buzz all the same.

Hey you never know, maybe your boss would love to catch a buzz before that hot game!:smoke:

But I digress...while the smell might be unpleasant to you, I don't think it would reflect bad on you personally, though it might be embarrassing. After all, you're not the one getting stoned in this scenario, I'm assuming. Like I said, your boss might even be a bit pleased at the odor! Just look for the tell tale poo-eating grin.
