Shoutboxes are aweful. You're forced to see it on every forum page, and they are common and small, badly run, inactive free forums. It's often filled with mis-spellings by the people talking, and take up page scrolling room.

It's not much more than that, and I doubt it will work here. Far to many people, it'll be impossible to keep track of.

At evo it's become nothing more then a spam box.
But yeah, it's pretty much a forum chat box.

one difference between them and a chat room is that the things in the shoutbox can be viewed after they have been shouted. It's like a hybrid between a forum and a chatroom in that you get the openeness of a chat room with the longer viewability of a forum.
that being said I go to a site that has one and don't particuallary care for it, but neither do i mind it. It can be very useful for making announcments (the devolpers have just confirmed civ4 will have the art of war!!!)
