Siege Towers Everywhere... Except in the Game

they are in the game you just havent seen them yet. I had an axemen with level 3 city raid ... or another upgrade not sure but reguardless it gave the axemen a siege tower but you could only see it while attack a city.

Sure there are. Whenever a foot unit attacks a city, they come packing a siege tower. Look for it.

What is seige tower any ways???????

^ old style cities all have a high outer wall for fortification purposes. Not just the castles, but outside the cities (back then, cities are usually compact within the walls, with fields outside). When troops come sack a city, they first have to somehow get through the wall, which has plenty of archers, people dropping rocks, people firing out stuff at you. One of the ways of getting up there is to have a giant siege tower, which are big towers on wheels that troops enter, walk up it, and exit on a much higher spot. These towers protect troops much better, and allows for troops to get up on top of the wall where they can fight the archers.

Ah, I see. I don't think it's all foot units, just units with City Raider promotions or an inherent +% City attack (like Swordsmen). Odd that I didn't see it during the Barbarians game I played. I'm guessing that it also only happens when the city is walled.

Cool!

I must say I do like the improved combat animations in general (there's more blows and shots fired, more action, less predictable). I hope there are more surprises in store.

One general to another:
"So I was thinking we could build a siege tower and bring it along to the next battle."
"Good idea. How big?"
"About the size of one of our soldiers."
"Yeah. Yeah, I like that."

Thats not a siege tower. Its an early porta-loo.

I guess they felt bad about pooing outside the city they were about to take.

It is as tall as the city walls.

Yeah, Siege towers are as tall as city walls that are as tall as a samuri that is as tall as a man can walk in 50 years etc.

Wow...is this just from Warlords? Or is this what I've been missing all along by having to run the game in low graphics-mode?

It's new, also the graphics of the terrain have been changed it looks like, which is good.

i had the same gripe, but thanks for proving me wrong. I wonder if there's a tech you research, too, that enable the animation (and obsoletes it ~ would be funny to see marines using the tower).

i just played the barbarians game and all my attacks with foot or siege weapons has siege towers.

I think this was a stroke of genius on the part of Firaxis... honestly, there was a siege tower unit created for Civ3, and I tried to find a way to incorporate it, but honestly, it just didn't seem to have a way to be both useful and true to life. And even with all the freedoms the Civ4 code allows, I still had nothing.

This definitely solves that problem. One of the little nuances that really makes Warlords worthwhile.

this is from the globaldefines xml. i was just coming online to see if anyone knew what it was, but i think this thread answered my question. presumably if you set it to 0, all units would get a siege tower.
