Sirian's Sand Box

We may only acquire AI techs (and maps and resources) through offers made by them on their own initiative, taken as-is.

We CAN sell our mpas, resources and tech to them, but only for cash and gpt, no maps or techs or resources.

Inherited Turn 750 AD

Fire musicians. Several clowns retrained as taxmen. Move a couple of workers left unmoved.

760 AD (1)

Kolhapur rax ->vet sword training. Chittagong rax -> vet horse training. Lake Sirian walls -> court. Worker movement. Shift slider to 0% and hire a scientist--myst due next turn--give us 40 more gold..

IT: Lincoln wants to trade WMs--with us chipping in 100g. No thanks.

770 AD (2)

Myst learned--poly up next. Hyderdad market -> library. 20% science gets poly in 4 @ 115gpt income. couple of swords complete.

780 AD (3)

2 more swords and a horse. Bangalore market -> library. Same for Karachi. Coastal flats temple -> granery. Palace expansion. more worker movement--trying to get good teaming--for jungles I think teams of 3 are the best balance between clearing speed in game turns and wasted worker turns.

790 AD (4)

Lahore rax -> sword production.

800 AD (5)

3 swords. Bengal court-> market. New Lahore granery -> market.

810 AD (6)

Polytheism discovered--feudalism is next--in 4 turns. . 2 swords and a horse.

IT: Hiawatha wants a straight-up RoP. I decline.

820 AD (7)

Sword and a horse.

830 AD (8)

One sword. New Dacca temple -> granery. Center city temple -> granery.

840 AD (9)

4 swords and a horse. New Kolhapur court -> market. Kolhapur switches from sword production to aqueduct.

IT: France is building Coopernicus!

850 AD (10)

Feudalism learned--monotheism next. I have the slider set to get it in four turns @ -19gpt. With 2 turns left, dial back the slider to still get it in two turns with positive income. One horse. Dacca court -> duct. New Delhi walls -> court. Macaw walls -> court. 11 swords upgraded for 220g. Two workers are in the forests by New Lahore to start chopping--this will speed the library that should be built after the market completes.

Nota Bene: All the AIs have gone up the top half of the tree--no one has engineering yet.

The Game

Ozy--As far as I can tell--we are just behind four techs on the upper half. They have not gotten Music Theory, otherwise Bachs would have started, and no one has anything on the lower half. I do not advocate leading the charge there--but we COULD get engineering in about 8 turns.

All we need do is follow them up the tree--hopefully all of these are about 4 turns each, with only deficits coming in the first two turns.

That's what I was planning to do, follow the AI up the tree to save us some time and money instead of researching at first rate. Since we can't trade for tech's there doesn't seem much use to getting any tech first, as far as I can tell anyway. :)

(EDIT: Double post. I hit "preview" then went back to add something I forgot and found the post had been done twice. oh well, the real post is down below including the save. Have fin!:D )

2 turns out from the FP. I started slowly moving workers toward Punjab (FP site) so they could help chop forests to hurry the aquaduct once the FP is done but some of the workers are 4-5 squares away.

One lone settler is on auto, heading for the last dot left south of Punjab.

I gathered all of the "free roaming" MDI we had and a couple of horses (upgraded to WE) near Kholapur (sp?) to the SE of Delhi. All of the MDI/WE are in sentry mode except for the top unit so it's easier to find them.

Mono was discovered early on and all of the cities that seemed to immediately need cathedrals built them so our unhappiness seems more under control, although it wouldn't hurt to still keep an eye on things.

Almost all of the cities that weren't on fresh water I now have building aquaducts with the thought that once our FP comes in we'll have the ability to support more people easier, and they'll be more efficient.

Military count:

11 Warriors
8 Swordsmen
17 MDI
6 Horsemen
2 War Elephants

47 Spearmen
2 Pike's.

IMHO, we have enough offense and need more/better defense! WIth this in mind I have the cities that produce 14 shields building WE, since they upgrade to Cav later, and the cities on 15-16 shields building pikemen. Some of our southern cities had a Swordsman and Warrior defending them, which is not good, IMHO.

Pikes are moving on auto to our Southern cities to help bolster them more.

We might also want to build more catapults, since they upgrade a long way, and concentrate less on the MDI since they only upgrade to Guerilla, at best.

Hrm, what else... Discovered Mono, Chivalry (chose that to get our WE sooner, before the Iroq are destroyed, if Abe feels froggy we might get a Golden Age out of it) and Theology is next in the next 1-2 turns. Research now is at most at a slight defecit, -10 gpt, if that, but I believe it's positive now. Should be even better once the FP completes.

Korea made contact and offered Monarchy for 470 gold around 890-910 AD so I bought it in worse case scenraio we need to swap to that.

The "cowboys" are still fighting the "Indians", and our military is better than everyone BUT America's, and our culture is worse than America's as well. Let's hope Abe decides to fight France next, or better yet, not fight at all, otherwise we'll be stuck on the same land mass as the proverbial 800 pound gorilla!

America and France are building Leo's, so it looks like we're still down 4 tech's at least; Education, Astronomy, Engineering, Invention. We won't know what else until we get at least Theology shortly.

Don't forget to start re-arranging workers on our size 12 cities so they will crank more shields once max population is been reached. Some workers near Bombay and Delhi are working on more shield intensive projects to help with this fact.

IT 950AD: Where are my lines of irrigation? :whipped: Who is actually MINING OVER one of the irrigation trails bringing usable water to the reclaimed areas of the western jungle? :smoke: Don't make me get harsh with you, now! :spank:

Oh, hmm? That's it on weed usage? [pimp] Just one item? And here I was all geared up to go on a tear. Oh well.

We need more courthouses. And why the total aversion to colesseums? We're not likely to get the rest of the luxuries, so at some point after hospitals, we'll need every happy unit we can get. More culture wouldn't be bad either. Throw off old habits and fit the strategy to the scenario!

Anyway... things are in good shape. Well, except for the fact that over half a dozen city sites never did get settled. I queue up some settlers to fix that. By the end of my round, all of the remaining sites will be filled in.

Hmm. I see Dwip has once again vetoed my road projects. "What are these workers doing out in the middle of nowhere where there aren't any roads? What could they possibly have been sent out there to do? Recall them!" :crazyeye: As such, the road up to the Tibetan Monestary does not yet exist. For that matter, neither does the monastery! This must be remedied. To make it up to the Dalai Lama, I will have to pay extra to rush his temple construction. See what happens when I don't spell out a plan in bright bold pink? :)

950AD: Wake a spear, hit Shift-U, spend a few hundred gold. Bunch of military projects get the veto stamp. Yeah, I know we need more military, but I'm six turns away from Education, see? Many colesseums are ordered up.

Press Next Turn... Joanie's griping about units in her territory? Eh? What is she smoking? We ain't got no units on her soil!

Oh. We have a ship? "I see," said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw.

960AD: Any spear within two city lengths of a barracks is awakened and sent toward the nearest barracks. The newly promoted pikes are wakened and sent to where the spears are coming from. "You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out, you put your left foot in and shake these units all about. [dance] You do the shifty nifty and you turn your force around. That's what it's all about!" :wavey:

Oh Joanie... Hey Lovey. How's about we ship you some free incense? You like that? You're gracious with us now? :love2: Our ship may pass unmolested? That's very kind of you.

Press Next Turn...

Oh you want to return the favor? And sell us this technology? Sure! I'll have to invite you over to my spankin new forbidden palace for some forbidden... exercises. We have an engineering text of our own you might be interested to read. It's called the Kama Sutra. :groucho:

ssb-fp.jpg

What? The Americans have heard rumors of our new forbidden palace and they want to learn more? :jump: Hey, sure. Just start paying us taxes and swear allegiance to our empire, and we'll make sure you get your own copies of the Kama Sutra. (Poor backward America with its prissy morals. No wonder those people wanted to get out of there! Have you actually SEEN that Lincoln fellow? Redefines the word ugly!)

ssb-albu.jpg

960AD! What a year.

970AD: The Iroquois kill off four attacking American units at their final city of Kente. As art once again imitates life, the Americans "magnanimously" set aside a small reservation for what's left of the Iroquois and make peace. Amazing.

ssb-iro.jpg

980AD-1000AD: More than half a dozen new cities are founded in our northern territory in the remaining settlement sites. The hokey pokey continues as our units dance all over the place. I spend big wads of dough on unit upgrades, upgrading our horsemen to jumbos after the swords are all upgraded and all the spears I'm bothering to shuffle around are promoted to pikemen.

I sell two lux to the Koreans for gpt and small cash.

1010AD: We learn education! Both Delhi and Bombay are sitting on 119 shields, waiting to swap to universities. OOPS. Nope, guess not. All those jungles nobody ever bothered to clear in our FIRST RING cause a disease outbreak at Bombay and the idiot governor reshuffles the tiles, and the Colesseum is completed there, killing my waiting prebuild! :wallbash:

Colesseums under construction all over the land get changed automagically into half-built universities! Presto-chango. I wave my magic keyboard and those spectator stands turn into study halls and classrooms. Isn't Civ3 cool?

1020AD-1040AD: I set our economy on track in the second core, having peeled off more workers, rushed temples at some cities (including for the Dalai Lama), and topped off the tank for a few courthouses, too. We are now running cash surplus while doing 4-turn research, not even at last civ prices, as the Iros are frozen in time and now firmly in last place.

Dwip: USE CASH TO RUSH COUTHOUSES IN THE SECOND AND THIRD RINGS AS WE CAN AFFORD IT, TO GREATLY SPEED THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORRUPT CITIES! ALSO SPARE NO EXPENSE ON UPGRADING TROOPS!

Dwip: BUILD MORE BARRACKS AND TRAIN MORE DEFENSIVE TROOPS! WE HAVE MANY CITIES IN THE NORTH UNDEFENDED AND ALL ARE UNDERDEFENDED! MAKE DEFENSE OF THE NORTH A HIGH PRIORITY, BUT USE THE NORTH TO DEFEND ITSELF! THE SOUTH NEEDS TO WORRY ABOUT AMERICA!

1050AD: We discover Invention and start on Banking. Our first university is completed in Delhi.

Dwip: THE COLESSEUM IN DELHI IS A BANK PREBUILD! THE UNIVERSITIES ARE NOT! THEY ARE INTENDED TO BECOME ACTUAL UNIVERSITIES!

Dwip: THE WORKER IN THE DESERT IS BUILDING ROADS! USE HIM TO BUILD ROADS THERE! ALSO GO BACK AND UNVETO THE ROAD PROJECT UP INTO TIBET!

Dwip: ANY CITY WITH ZERO IRRIGATION IMPROVEMENTS IS "DRY" AND NEEDS A LINE OF IRRIGATION BROUGHT TO IT!

Your mission, if you decide to accept it, is to play a round of ten turns and stay away from the weed. This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck! :goodjob:

Half our units are workers:

Dwip: PURSUE BANKING, PRINTING PRESS, THEN DEMOCRACY!

Bam-Bam: We want to change to Democratic government the same turn the tech comes in. At some point here, we will either stop trailing the AI or we will have to slow down. By your turn, we should be gushing cash. Avoid the optional techs, except for Military Tradition. The AI's will probably offer to sell the rest to us at some point anyway. Here's hoping we have saltpeter somewhere in range!

Well I mined that one tile since it was a bonus grassland and there was irrigation on both sides of the time I was swapping. Sorry. :p

Was the 'Tibetian monastery' supposed to be to the north of the FP site? I saw the road leading to a lot of ice so sent a horeman up to investigate the area. I thought if there was a whale or fish it would make a good "fishing vilage" but the catch seemed poor up that way.

Speaking of fishing villages, do we want to add another one on the desert tile, along the river South West of Madras, where it can get the whale? Just a thought...

That desert tile? Hmm. The forest looks better. It would recover a wasted plains tile on the river, which would mean getting the desert for free. That city could reach size 12, so yeah, that would be worth doing.

As for passing up tundra in the north... why do that? There could be oil or aluminum up there. Any anything within three rings is worth grabbing. Why let the AI have it?

My apologies for missing the handover I am terribly sorry, my second son is born last thursday and even though I was sure I checked if I was up, I totally missed it...
:suicide:

Congrats, Skyfish. :)

Got it, will deal with it tonight probably.

Until then, commentary.

Roads: I roaded where I saw there was going to be a dot(1). I also tried to irrigate as much as possible and clear jungles and get workers back to the core and...

It's not like we were exactly swimming with workers during my turns, here. So for the most part I sacrificed the tundra cities and whatnot. *shrug*

For the most part I did irrigation more than mines though. ;)

Military: I've got my own estimates on how much military we should have places, but since everything I do is up for critique these days - what are we considering to be an adequate military force to shoot for? 2 defenders per city? 2 rearline/3 frontline + offensive troops? What?

As to the rest, check.

(1) - Which is to say, I was and am greatly confused on which locations are still up for settling, if any. Needed a more up to date dotmap.

Sky--congrats on the second son! My wife is on her sixth week of bedrest--trying NOT to have our second daughter early (first one was early).
