Sirp's Training Day Game for Aspiring Monarchs

If you do go to v1.21 don't underrate the scientific trait. Couple it with either expansionist or industrious and it can be quite powerful. Expansionist or industrious will allow you to keep up with the AI during the ancient age, buy the last few techs and you get a free tech in middle age. My current deity game when I got to the middle ages in 1000BC I had a monopoly on engineering. I ended up getting feudalism, monotheism, and monarchy for it.

I'm loving the Ottomans.

I hope you all dont mind me jumping in to this discussion, But when Discussing game Settings realy gets me going (Especaly with myself as a Tourney Staff, they do this all the time, Discuss the settings of the game).

I have read SP5 to date, and you don't need to sell me on expansionist. :) Not that it always works - I just started an emperor game as America and got

-maps
-maps
-25g
-advanced tribe so far away that it's the middle ages and still not connected :p
-maps

Or something like that. And that's not even to mention the plains start with no rivers. I think the random map generator is out to get me whenever I move up a level. :)

Renata

@ Speaker - Actually, it helps in the middle age draw usually, but it can be a nightmare in the draw for the industrial age if you slingshot up and get medicine, one of the few techs that I nearly allways researched myself in every game because the AI ignore it so blatantly. If you could get up to the industrial age about the same time as the AI, it was usually possible to get nationalisim and broker it, research medicine first, and often sanitation first which would keep you up via brokerage till ToE, now that can be really dicey.

Yeah I agree that the lower predictability of the new Scientific free tech can be bad as well as good.

@Renata: That doesn't sound like very many huts to pop. How many scouts did you build. Btw now you have 300 posts, you get the title 'Prince'; maybe you should change it to Princess? :) (CivIII now tries to use gender-neutral level names, but not CivFanatics!)

-Sirp.

 about 'prince' - I'll have to think about that. :)

Is five huts below average for Emperor-level 8-civ Pangaea? I've usually gotten 6-8, but there's less competition when the AI doesn't have those extra units to go scouting. At any rate, two of my scouts walked right into barbs early on (the first in 3050 BC - silly non-expansionist Koreans popping huts. :p ) And there was a lot of forest/jungle/hills/mountains. I think I built a total of four scouts.

Renata

building 4 scouts, for 5 total (add the one you start with) is a fair number for a standard pangea. How early did you build them? I usually go scout-scout-warrior-granary when I'm expansionist, although sometimes s-w-s-g if I'm scared of early aggression. The earlier you get the scouts out the better!

-Sirp.

Total four including the one I started with, not in addition to. :) Two from my capital at the start and another later from my bonus city.

Renata

Oh, then that does sound a bit thin on them Renata, I normally produce a couple more from the capital or a core city after the granary.

Ok, what patch to play this game on? Thanks to Matt_g, I have been able to get 1.21f working on my machine :goodjob:

My policy is this: Use the most recent patch that all signed up players can use.

So that means that if everyone can use 1.21f, that's what we'll use, otherwise we'll use 1.14f. Note that it is possible, and fairly easy, to switch between patches. If anyone wants the instructions on how to do it, they can be posted/linked to.

I know that Matt_g and I have 1.21f, Renata said she has the US version and so presumably can install it. Stormrider's location is listed as New York, and Borealis' as Michigan, so I assume they both have US versions and can install it.

If anyone whose signed up *can't* install 1.14f, please let me know ASAP.

So when's this puppy going to start? Probably sometime over the next few days. I'm going to run a few brief tests just to get something I think is suitable. At the moment the proposed turn order is,

Stormrider
Sirp
Renata
Matt_g
Borealis

I figure that Borealis has slightly more experience than the others, so I have tried to spread her and I out.

-Sirp.

I just need to install the patch. Afte that, I am ready to rock and roll...

Alright!! Glad to hear this.

So when's this puppy going to start? Probably sometime over the next few days.

Sirp already knows this, but I will post it here for the benefit of the other players. :)
I am planning on taking the G/F and puppy to So. Cal. probably Sat. the 5th and won't be back till Friday the 11th. I am going to take my laptop (to unload pics out of the digital camera) and as such may be able to check the thread, but there is no way I will be playing Civ. (I like it when Annie hurts me, but not that way!) ;)

This all may still fall through. There are certain things that have to happen in order for me to be able to leave. I will keep you guys posted.

BTW, 1.21 all the way if possible.

Hi there,

Even if I'm rather late with this,Well done everyone.
I enjoyed the lurking and learnt a lot.

I would be really interested to take part in a trainings game but NOT Deity.
Anyone out there to do another one on Monarch or one on Emperor?
If yes, I'd love a reservation.

Shevek

Sirp,

I assume you will start a new thread when this is ready to go down?

Stormrider

Stormrider: oh yes, a new thread of course. I just haven't started one yet because otherwise we'd be into the third page and still not have started the game. :)

Matt_g: Did you get my email? I sent you a reply, and I sent you a private message through the forums...did you get either one of those? :)

And yeah I'd probably get hurt too if I played Civ in such circumstances :)

Shevek: Glad you enjoyed reading. I have had *lots* of expressions of interest in another Monarch/Emperor TDG actually, largely in private messages. So, if there are any experienced players out there who want to run one....there'd be lots of demand for it!

-Sirp.

I was reading through the Forum and I noticed something mentioning Emperor TDG. I currently have an Emperor SG in the Discussion Phase. If I had known about the Demand of an Emperor TDG, I would be happy to Co-host or Partisipate in an Emperor TDG. With the Info I pick up from the Emperor TDG, I could Teach some players in my SG some tricks :).
I have a few Experiance with Emperor (Largely from partisipating in the DG since they are on that difficuty) I would like to Parisipate in a Emperor TDG to Refresh and Learn some skills To Benifit both my SG and the Demogame.

(Note: This post is soley for the interest of Joining an Emperor TDG if it is on the Drawining Boards)

Sure did. Both of them. :)

Edit:
@ Shaesha, I know 'hurt' wouldn't cover it in my case!
I can see it now. "Honey, let's go for a walk on the beach and watch the sunset"
No, I would rather stay here and play Civ 3. You go ahead.

Oh yeah, that would go over real well. Might even be fatal. :p

I'm not even sure fatal covers it... I'm thinking of torture <weg>

However, I will say I don't think Sirp would ever do that to me, despite his love of the game.

He knows when to be afraid LOLOL
