I'm a little confused by the size matters mod. I see the button to split my units up into smaller units, but I haven't seen a button to merge them into a bigger unit, even with three or more of the exact same unit with the exact same promotions and xp level. Even when I take a unit, split it into three smaller units, the option to merge them back into one is not there. Am I missing something here?

There are a number of things one must keep in mind to enable merging:
1) the three units to merge must not be grouped with any other units, including each other. Select the primary unit to lead the merge and if there are 2 other units (on the same plot) that it can merge with, the option becomes available.
2) none of the units to merge may have moved this round
3) none of the units to merge may be loaded
4) none of the units to merge may be wounded
5) if given quality upgrades, all of the units must be of the same quality level
6) all three units must be of the same unit type, such as swordsmen, for example.
7) there are a number of unit types that cannot merge: Anything that modifies property values (Law Enforcement, Healers, Criminals) or is a visibility or invisibility specialist (Hunters, canines, felines etc...). Generally, merging and splitting are just for military and transport units.

That's usually the stuff that gets ya. There may be others.

how do you tell the maximum size a unit may merge to?
One higher than what it starts at is allowed per era. So in the Ancient you can merge twice. In the Classical, three times. etc...

Well, in my case, I've never seen the button for merging units appear, only the 'split unit' button. I even split up a few units just to try and merge them back together again to see how unit merging works, but no dice. Splitting units leaves them forever split. Version is 37

Are you letting the units sit there for the round? They can't merge the same round they split. And if you're then grouping them in any manner, such as selecting them all together, you'll keep yourself from ever seeing the merge option come up.

I attempt to merge them back together the next turn. Picking them one by one, grouping them, whatever I do, no button for merging them pops up.

you should just select one, and then be able to merge them, I always build 6 Archers and a Settler to expand, which in turn gets upsized to 2 Archers,

I'm sorry for the short answer previously. What I should say here is please upload a save with instructions on how to replicate the problem you are having. There COULD be a bug in here somehow.

While unlikely to help, I've noticed that sometimes ungrouping by clicking on the units fails (they stay in a group of one, or something similar).
Try to regroup, and ungroup using the buttons at the bottom.

True, just because you have a unit selected doesn't mean its not part of a group. Select the unit again and it will regroup, showing you that it was only temporarily ungrouped (until moved). Plus the other units have to not be part of a group as well.

So I started a new game, and now it seems to be working fine. I suppose something just got bugged in that other game.
