Skaven development thread

how about Gregorian chanting... after raising the pitch so they are high and squeaky?

plus rattling of chains, echoing dripping (like in a sewer), tribal drum beats, clashing of metal, screams of rats, sizzling of flesh, scuttling of claws on the ground as kind of background noise.

anything else?

@ mrtn- After reading this from the Aussie Games Workshop site, i think the censer bearers could be used as a cruise missile unit, instead of an upgrade from the plague priest:

Only the most deranged and fanatical worshippers of disease are chosen for the honor of carrying a plague censer. These weapons are flails whose spiked heads are filled with burning warpstone incense. On the battlefield, groups of Censer Bearers advance in front of larger units of Plague Monks reciting the Liturgicus Infecticus. When the enemy is in sight, they charge, swinging their heavy censers. The cloud of poisonous gas that enshrouds them as they fight often proves as fatal to the Censer Bearers themselves as to their enemies. However, this drawback is no deterrent to these lunatics who scream prayers of thanks to the Horned Rat even as they die with their lungs filled with blood and pus.

what do ya think?

If you're looking for skaven music, might I humbly suggest something from here

You see, I figure that the Skaven would be running some smoky, dimly lit subterranean dance club that would put the most disreputable dive in LA to shame, so why not have some dark, Techno/Industrial music for them? The one that I think would be best would be also the first song I did: B's Technodidj. This song I mixed myself playing a didjeridoo I bought in Darwin, AU as the main Bass harmony, and mixed in some somewhat distorted woodblocks, bongos, freaky guitar and synth as well as the standard techo beat and set the whole catastrophe to 140 BPM....

The Unauthorized Transmission one would work pretty good as well... I made that song one night when I was at sea, and I tried to tune in something on my shortwave radio, but all I got was sattleites and data transmissions... The song has a lot of signal-noise/data transmission sounding synth lines....

Or you can just not use them, it's all good.

BTW, what do the doomwheel and Rat Tank look like? I may do them myself, since unusual fantasy vehicles are one of my specialties.

IMO, that music is a bit too organised/civilised for the skaven. i was thinking more tribal and primative.

both the rat tank and the doomwheel can be found on the first page, at posts 4 and 5 respectively.

would you be interested in doing a skaven LH, hikaro? kinboat started one, but as we all know, he has moved on. my plan for it is at the bottom of the first page, and kinboat's previews are on "page 3/post 57", "page 5/post 94", "page 7/post 131" and on "page 8/post 149"

what i was thinking of, tho, is the pic posted by CC in post 146.

the skaven will rise!

I don't think I can do the LH.... I don't have any kind of mouse or rat-man typ figures for poser (I do have a cute animeish mouse-girl, but she looks more like Freya from FF IX than a proper skaven). I also don't think I'll do the doomwheel (at least not yet), but I can definitely do the tank in the near future... You see, I've got basically two unit making computers: One that runs Poser 5 faster and is dedicated to making poser units, and one that runs Bryce fast, and so it's a dedicated Bryce comp. Most times (if I'm not too tired), I'll simultaneously make units on both (like I've been doing the Brotherhood of Steel Airship on the second comp at the same time I've been doing the settler units on my main comp), and I'll do the Rat tank right after I make the Imperial Sky Armor airship from FF VI (which will be right after the brotherhood airship).

the contraption behind the rat tank is basically the doomwheel. just add a seat on top with a skaven in it and presto! Doomwheel has been invented!

that's cool about the LH. if you ever get bored tho... ;)

what about this from kinboat's poser stuff thread? http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=1397395

there looks to be to skaven-like head there (at the end of the first post). could they be used?

go to "go HERE to see how they fit together", then go to post 675. something like that would be cool!

We'll have to see. Units First... The main reason I'm not doing the Doomwheel right now is (A) I have NO idea of how to make it attack (and I can't import my Bryce models into Poser, and even though I can import poser models into Bryce, I can't import the skeletons, so I won't be able to animate the figure), and (B) the problem of having a humanoid unit in Bryce.... The tank, on the other hand, won't take much time at all since I have a ton of experience making tanks (GrossPanzer, Tesla Tank, Ork Looted Lehman Russ Tank, Land Battleship, Steam Tank, etc). As for the LH, again, I'll just have to see, but I have a feeling that those Trolock Heads don't have any emotion morphs, so it will be next to impossible to do moods....

thats amazing! but the singing, although high-pitched, are "squeaky" enough. maybe add a warpstone golbadier chanting deep and growly for a part of it?

Lizardman, I was going to suggest a modified version of my Technodidj, but where the Club-techno drums were replaced with Japanese Taiko, and the Guitar and synth were replaced with Pan flutes and Alpenhorns.....

but Nevermind.

I'm playing the WH fantasy mod right now as the Dwarfs, and ended up (suprise, surprise) with the Chaos Dwarves next door.... As a matter of fact, the Chaos dwarves went to war with me so that they could try to take my second iron source, but all they got for their efforts were two of my roads pillaged and about 50% of their army wiped out...

Anyways, I'll probably start working on the Imperial Sky Armor tomorrow, then after that I'll do the Rat Tank with the green "laser"... er, I mean warpfire cannon

@ hikaro: i've tried to add the Skaven music to a custom game of mine. i followed your instructions in the "Adding/Specifying Custom music" thread in the reference, tutorials and guides forum, but it isn't working.

I made a file system like this: WHDoD\sounds\build\ancient;Middle Ages;IndModern;Misc. I called the skaven music AncGRFull.mp3 and added it to the ancient folder, along with the original ancient music for the europeans, asians, mid easterns and americans (with Skaven as Mediterranean). but it plays the original greco-roman music instead of my uber-cool skaven choir :(

You said you managed this in your FF mod, but i've tried everything i can think of and nothing seems to work.

i could, i suppose, edit the music.txt file, but then the other races will have skaven music too, which i do not want. HELP!

Well, there are a series of .wav files that are basically the mp3's split up that it automatically starts, even with the custom mp3s. If you have the autosave feature enabled, start a game, then load it and it'll start playing the mp3, otherwise, it will play through the wav files THEN start on the mp3s, and keep playing the mp3s from then on out... I don't know why it works this way, and I didn't feel like splitting the FF music into about a dozen wav files, so I just either dealt with it or just reloaded from the autosaved game.
