I suspect Venice was the beginning of a "Italian city-state civ" rotation and whichever one they pick for Civ VI (Genoa or something) will appear in the 2nd expansion like Venice did.
That would be great, actually. The game would need to change a bit for it to be viable, though. That said, it seems they are already taking some steps in that direction with Rise and Fall. Perhaps they will move further in the second expansion.
We haven't gotten to Rise and Fall yet, and you have already got me eagerly awaiting the second expansion.
Number of civs added in the game is limited by financial considerations (development, creation times...) , so I'm sorry but YES, Tamar takes the place of another civ.
If you are happy to have Georgia in you game instead of Polynesia/Inuits/Sioux/Ghana/etc...good for you, congratulations!
*Polynesia is a blob civ. Pass.
*Inuit have no leaders or cities. Pass.
*If you want to talk about a meme, the Sioux are a meme. Pass.
*I wouldn't be horrified to see Ghana, but I'm not waiting for them with baited breath.
So yep, I definitely want Tamar, a powerful leader of a unique civilization, over all of those. And I sincerely hope we don't see Polynesia (Hawai'i or Maori or a specific Polynesian civ--fine, but not another blob Polynesia), Inuit, or Sioux.
Word for word. I don't doubt it was Tamargate which probably caused her to appear on the devs radar, but her inclusion is almost certainly the product of her own merit Strong female leader, single-handedly responsible for her country's Golden Era, appears in other countries legacies (she and Tomyris are said to have inspired the character "Tamora" in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus), popular with present-day Georgians and she fits the bill for one of the expansion's new mechanics to boot (Golden Ages). She's a great addition to that franchise, even if this will likely be her only appearance (as Georgia itself is a fairly insignificant empire. Then again, one of the staples of this franchise is freaking Zululand, soooo)
Ignorance and Sexism go hand-in-hand, sadly, so the meltdowns are going to happen and people are going to bring up the meme status forevermore because heaven forbid anyone or -thing who threatens to fracture the glass ceiling.

I may not want another blob Polynesia civ, but cultures from that region are very high on my wishlist! I just don't see why Georgia would take their place. If anything, Georgia is more likely to take the place of Byzantium, or Romania, or potentially (although I highly doubt it) Ottoman Turkey. It's like saying "Oh they've added Nubia so I guess we won't be getting the Netherlands!"
It takes the place of another civ, yes. But almost certainly a civ from Eurasia, not the South Pacific, Africa, or North America.

The Lakhota are only one branch of the Sioux; you forgot the Dakota and Assiniboine. But the Sioux are over-represented in the media and weren't really that significant aside from fighting the US. We're also sort of at "horse raiding warmonger" quota with Tomyris and Genghis. I'd much rather see some other tribe like the Iroquois, Powhatan, or Choctaw or Chickasaw.
I'd take a Polynesian blob civ. I'd at the very least like to see some form of Polynesia return, but I'm sort of attached the idea of wayfaring and Moai, which might not really work in terms of historical accuracy. I wouldn't know though, I'm not an expert on Polynesian cultures.

To be entirely fair, those are early and mid-game horse rushing civs, while a Native American horse rush civ would have its moment in the later eras, though not quite at tanks. I think it'd be interesting, though mostly as a gameplay concept.
The meme came to life from the fact that many civfanatics would think that the most interesting and relevant leader fitting the image was Tamar. Many women leaders have been included in Civ VI partly due to gender diversity (in which I see nothing wrong). However, as I've understand from the Tamar discussions, she genuinely was a historical figure worthy to be represented in Civ franchise, and also a woman. She was a monarch that indepently led Georgia during the Golden age of Georgia. Thus, she is one of the leaders that definitely should be represented in Civ VI, considering diversity in terms of yet unrepresented countries and gender. The fact that Civfanatics may have contributed to the inclusion is a merit of Civfanatics, not a reduction in the relevance of Tamar and Georgia.
Some representation from the Cacausus area is very welcome.
She certainly ruled during Georgia’s Golden Age. Peasants were like nobles, nobles like princes and princes like kings in that time, so the story goes.
The Golden Age abruptly ended less than a decade later when the Mongols destroyed the Georgia army on their grand reconnaissance mission led by Subutai during the rule of Chinggis Khaan. Georgia was subjugated by the Mongols in 1238. So, the trailer makes sense.

Well, some people were commenting that Wikipedia was in cahoots with Firaxis somehow. I had never really looked into it, but I just visited Wikipedia. Well, it got it wrong today, but maybe it is a foreshadowing for next week. It features at the Jaffa Clock Tower, which was constructed by the Ottoman Empire.
On the actual and main topic of discussion here and now, Georgia and Tamar are welcomed IMHO. Not only because different is good, but also because the idea of Tamar and Georgia are complemented by other many positive things about her that we have talked about for the past year and a half, maybe more. The icing on the cake for me is how interesting her life and reign were. Frankly, I didn't know much about her before the guessing that went on whether she was in the vanilla civ selection or not, but as we often do here, I researched her and she became a real person to me and someone who could easily fit what Civilization is all about. I like the fact that she is a she, that she fits well with one of the main expansion themes and that she is not the Ottoman empire, meaning that she is different and not an expectation. I, personally, want the Ottomans to be included now as well as the Inca, but I think Firaxis did good today by hinting at a new civ and following a pattern of giving us diversity. Hopefully, tomorrow that will be met with an out-of-the-box First look as the Cree were to me and to others.
