So anyway, place your bets: when will civ7 arrive?

Some other thread people wrote how the civ's social media icon is Cleopatra the seventh, do you think its just a coincidence or a hint that something is close?

In the 30 years celebration video there are 7 different icons, all are Civ VI leaders but one is Lincoln (who was in other civ games). I bet he leads America in Civ VII.

There was also this Instagram posting spree of World Wonders, and some of those splashes were not in any of the games (they sadly weren't the greatest looking).

Cleopatra is probably in the top ten most famous historical figures, in particular if you go back more than a century, so I don't know if that might be reading too much into things. Oh, and she's also a woman, which probably makes her the most easily recognizable out of that entire top ten (as chances are that the others are all men), which is another reason to choose her.

2K is participating in Summer Fest this week. The trailer for the event shows scenes from Midnight Suns, a Firaxis game in development. Maybe they will make mention of Civ VII
:goodjob: Thanks for the link.

Would really be nice to hear a mention for Civ7. :please:

Why Civ 7 on a sphere? Apart from the greater realism of portraying polar regions correctly, the main reason would be having something to make the game stand out as significantly different. Just as moving from squares to hexes in Civ 5 was something that really changed the game. Given the number of mods for Civ 6, it's more of a challenge to produce a Civ 7 that really is Civ 7 and not Civ 6.1. I could make a list of things I'd like to see in Civ 7, but the result would be Civ 6 done right.

Yes, but "different" does not always mean "better." Civ 5 made the switch from squares/diamonds to hexagons in order to fix the exploitation of diagonal movement. There's no gameplay reason for Civ 7 to go to a spherical map that I can think of other than shorter flight over the poles (which doesn't really seem extremely impactful to me). Other than that, it's just a pretty aesthetic or novelty gimmick.

Hexagons have always been used by preference for most wargames since the days of Avalon Hill.

I'm not suggesting that a Civ-on-a-sphere would necessarily be better. My point is that for Civ 7 to look like Civ 7 and not like a modded Civ 6.1, some big new idea is needed. In the case of Humankind, mutating factions are it. In the case of Old World, moves as a resource to be doled out are it. A spherical map would be a big new idea. Whether for good or ill is another matter.

If not, what could make Civ 7 Civ 7 and not just Civ 6 done right? A list of wanted fixes is not enough.

One thing off the top of my head that could be new* and different is what some people around here have been clamoring for: getting rid of workers/builders and using the "public works" system where tile improvements are performed through the city build queue.

*by "new" I mean to the numerical Civ games. This was used in Call To Power, but I'm a little foggy on who actually made that game and whether or not it's considered official canon. Besides, I'm sure most people outside of CivFanatics don't even remember that game existed.

EDIT: something else that could be new and different is what @Leyrann suggested in another thread: a toggle button during game set-up where you can choose whether you want the AI to roleplay as a historic empire builder or actively pursue a Victory Condition as a pseudo-human.

I just read a thing where the Marvel game has had a leaked release date in October. So their schedules might clear up a bit after that. I bet that has the chance of making all of them giant wheelbarrows full of money, so I don't blame them for concentrating on that a big more.

Followup:
It looks like they are re-inaugurating the Midnight Suns marketing push, starting tomorrow at the Summer Game Fest at 11am US Pacific time. Maybe they will say a thing about Civ? But I'm feeling more certain that they won't. If MS is indeed coming out in October, which we will probably learn tomorrow, then it's pretty unlikely Civ VII will be out before, during, or immediately after that. 2023 looks all the more likely.

Another thing that would constitute a major change would be having some sort of tactical combat resolution, either switching the units to a tactical map, or abstracting it as in Crusader Kings. I'm not sure it would work without increasing the stacking limit, but maybe units in adjacent hexes could be drawn in.

Confirmed. Midnight Suns comes out October 7th.

Also think there will be no news Civ7 releated until October this year, we will probably see earliest hint or something in early 2023.

I've tried hard with Humankind, but found I've returned to Civ VI because its well-rounded and, well, Civ.

Civ VII will benefit from its being delayed, it can take the good feedbacked bits from Humankind for a start - Fall 2023, my prediction!
