So anyway, place your bets: when will civ7 arrive?

I agree game dev roles are lower paid than equivalent software developer. But I think it's largely because so many people have a passion for it and want to work in the industry that companies have taken advantage of that and paid less.

I don't anyone leaves university really excited to work in the Fintech industry on a B2B loan website:) That's why they have to pay $50k more and stock options and "come work with the latest tech" etc
:) ... and then there is important code, which is maintained / patched since decades by many generations of developers (and it looks exactly like that!), because it is always in use and never switched off / rewritten from scratch ... eg. signalling on railway driving lanes, dynamic blocking of track sections, controlling railway turnouts, gates etc. [talking about compensation for personal suffering ;)]

Please, no. Keep Humankind/Amplitude-style combat out of Civ. Can’t stand it.

Ya it would basically be a different game at that point

Incidentally, I'm never so opposed to 1UPT as folk here call it, as I go back to hex wargaming in the 1970s when single-stacking was commonplace in games like Napoleon at Waterlooo, Blue and Gray Quad, and so on. So I'm used to it. But in fact in Civ 6 you can do some stacking - a leader on a combat unit for instance. So one possibility would be to allow stacking a missile unit on a melee unit as a compromise.

I’ve been playing Civ6 with a mod that allows limited stacking; one unit type per hex, so you can have one ranged, one melee and one cav in a hex, and it’s absurd how much it improves the game

I’ve managed to combine the best elements of Civ4 and Civ6 into a single game using Civ6 plus mods.

Funny there's no news yet on that 'Ara History' game. I thought it was supposed to be out next year?

I think that's the closest we'll get to CIVII in a long time.
They're holding tests and you can invite yourself, but I just tried last week and you can only finish the registration if you have an Xbox Live account.

Super weird.

Does it work properly? Does AI make any relevant use of it?

Tbh, I was really fearing that they might be planning a Spin-Off Game, which I wouldn't have liked no matter what the Theme would be (maybe except if it'd be a Mobile Game), bc that would be too late and also mean No Civ7 for at least 2-3 Years. So, I'm glad they are doing a Leader Pass, which shouldn't be as resource demanding as a new Game would be, and also don't require the main Dev Team to work on it, like NFP didn't. Which means that it shouldn't slow down the development of Civ7 much (which I believe is in it's Alpha Stage at this point. Rumours and Speculation suggest the Devs having started working on it as earliest as Late-2019).

So, I don't think the new Leader Pass implicitly means a delayed Civ7. Late 2023 is still a Possibility.

I'm worried the newest pass will mean civ7 comes later, if devs are still invested in civ6
If anything, I think most of the resources are being invested into the new Marvel Midnight Suns game that's releasing this month or next.
I think the leader pass is a small team working on things to at least keep the interest of the civ fans in the meantime.

On the other hand, they may be thinking that Civ 6 has taken the franchise as far as it can go for the moment. If there is a lack of vision as to what Civ 7 should be like, then adding a new DLC to Civ 6 would be a way to keep things rolling. I tend to agree that looking to 2024 may be correct.

I know you respond to my own worry, but now that you have described it in such radical form, I rethought this view and meh, I don't think that some minor dlc introducing few more leaders for some old civs engages nearly enough resources to delay the entire new game.
I think it pushes it back a little, esp considering everything else going on. But that's okay. As much as I'm excited to play a new Civ the barebones original release is also usually kind of a bummer after coming off of a game that has years to be fleshed out.

I think new DLC affects when we can expect to hear about Civ7, but I suspect the main team has been working on Civ7 for quite some time. A beta team putting out DLC for Civ6 likely doesn't affect that.

You've returned!

I would have thought that if it were releasing for Xmas '21, they'd have announced something by now. '24 seems mighty late - the longest gap by far I'm the franchise and it seems reasonable to assume that they were already working on it when they started NFP.

Im pretty sure if they had released for '21, they'd have announced before now too ;)

Jokes aside, '22 does seem tight. You would have thought that they would have let the anticipation build more. On the other hand, the timing would seem daft, releasing shortly after Christmas.
Edit: Oops, thought this about the DLC, problem about push notifications!

Hard to say, of course, but my guess is not before Autumn 23, at the earliest.

I agree, this may well have pushed Civ7 back to 2024?
I think Midnight Suns has pushed it back to 2024 and this is our compensation....
