God no! Like another poster says, once you get past the beginning, it's a fun read. Other books are much harder than The Silmarillion.

If you can get past the opening, which is pretty dull biblical stuff, it's a corking read. War, death, murder, betrayal, heroism, the whole shebang. I've read it half a dozen times myself.

That's actually a good description of the Bible as well.
