so how does buying from the Steam works ?

my old computer died , had a shiny flashy new one . ı know it's available on Steam . So ı enter credit card numbers and the system sells it , in some way ı don't know yet . What happens then ? Is it an installer file that needs web connection ? Or will it be a .rar file or equivalent that ı can take home ? The distinction is important as ı don't have internet connection at home and using my brother's is both slow and runs out its monthly limits .

The Steam installation is a separate piece of software that basically does everything for you. You can either enter Steam codes you bought somewhere else, you can put in your credit card number or you can also upload cash via Paypal and then buy stuff with the uploaded amount. The rest (including download, installation and upgrades) is handeled by Steam. It's actually quite convenient - as long as you are aware that you are giving away ownership of you game data CD or DVD and hand over controll to an external server that in turns checks (via Online-DRM) whether you are the rightful owner of the game and prohibits you to use it if not. There is an offline mode, but whenever you actually are online or change you hardware or reinstall the game the check is done again...

thanks . So ı guess this means ı can use credit card stuff to buy from home and then go to a web cafe for the installation and play at home without connection . Is Windows8 convenient for the scenarios that ı will reload from CFC or administrator problems occur regularly ?

As someone who has downloaded the steam version, I strongly advise against it. There are missing files that won't allow you to play the PTW version of the game and the steam version is lacking a lot of the scenario files.

Your best bet is to go out and buy the full version.

The next best option is to buy from amazon.com. Amazon still has files missing however.

thanks . Living in Turkey ı think finding a full version is somewhat remote . Files could be handled seperately in case there is a list of what's missing . ı have a whole save of the XP version on an external drive , could cover the gaps .

Yes, but there are also boxed versions of C3C that lack exe files required to play Vanilla and PtW, so one has to be carefull. However it should be no big deal to get a used copy of Civ III from Ebay quite cheaply even if local stores in Turkey don' offer it any more...

I can only say that I own the Steam version and it worked fine on Win8. I also have all the cd's from vanilla and ptw and c3c.

I do not play C3 or PTW any longer. The main file missing I would guess are the extras from PTW. They use to offer those free on Firaxis, but I think they are gone now.

Only need for some scenarios iirc.

thanks . And a relief of sorts as the only time ı open the PTW is when there is a Game of the Month in which ı fail anyhow .
