It would be cool to start a "software starter pack" thread. A lot of places online offer packs, but it would be interesting to find out everyone's custom pack

The scenario:
You have a new computer/fresh install/whatever. What is the core software you put on the computer almost immediately?

My list, broken down by theme:

Basics
- OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit with all the cruft switched off
- PDF reader: foxit reader
- RAR extractor: winzip or 7zip or RAR extract frog. The Frog is more limited but has a smaller footprint.

Internet and media
- Internet: Firefox + adblock + noscript
- Music player: foobar2000, though I'm looking around for an alternative
- Movie player: Combined Community Codec Pack 09.09.09 with Media Player Classic Homecinema included. Handles every format with grace. If you have an older computer, augment with coreAVC. If you're running Linux or Mac, swap out CCCP for MPlayer.
- Torrent client: uTorrent

Getting work done
- LaTeX maker: MikTeX 2.8 + TeXnicCenter
- Data analysis software: Stata 11 + stat/transfer. Warning: not free. Alternatives include SAS or R. R is free. There are others - SPSS, EViews, etc - but Stata and R are really all you need unless you're running huge (>4GB) datasets.
- Text editor: notepad++ or crimson editor
- Office suite: MS Office 2002
- Coding: Netbeans for Java and Visual Studio Express for C++. I could be doing better on this front...

Backups and Antivirus
- Sync utility: Microsoft SyncToy
- Antivirus: AVG Free. If you must use antivirus software, I recommend AVG.

Games
- Steam. Done.

Here's software I put the installers into my "Basics" folder (except for things like NET Framework or Adobe Flash Player). It's in the alphabetical order. All is free.

(Right now I'm sorry for the lousy typing. I get like this in the winter.)

7-Zip, to zip zipped files.
Add Take Ownership, which is a registry hack to add "Take Ownership" to the context menu (because I'm lazy).
AVG Antivirus, antivirus
ClipGuru, I have a tendency to accidentally overwrite the clipboard when I don't mean to.
CloneSpy, to delete duplicate files, to delete duplicate files, very powerful when you make sure.
Firefox, brower
HWiNFO32 which tells me the hardware of my
ImgBurn, burns discs
K-Lite Codec Pack. I use the Mega pack. It comes with Media Player Classic so I won't list that seperately.
Paint.NET, image editor. Anyone who says that NET applications suck hasn't tried this.
Recuva, I'd rather install it before I have to use it rather than accidentally overwrite.
Revo Uninstaller To remove the junk files, that some lousy programs leave behind
RoughDraft, although it says it's for writers I found it a pretty decent general-purpose RTF editor. Although it says that it doesn't work on Vista I've had no problem.
Unlocker, for those stubborn files.
Vista Black, my prefered theme for Vista, requires patch.
VistaGlazz can apply that patch. It can be uninstalled but I just leave it because sometimes Windows Updates will un-patch it.
VLC Media Player to play videos. The portable version is very useful as you don't have to worry about if there's codecs on the machine you're using.
Winamp. My usual music player. I linked to a third-party site because I hate the navigation of the official.
WordWeb system tray dictionary. Has a very interesting license.

Very Useful Thing to do is before doing a system wipe, download latest versions of all installers and burn them to a CD. If you have a CD-RW you can overwrite older versions. This makes sure you

I dont have a software pack :D

I just have a drive image. Restore from image, and you're good to go. (well, reinstall steam and the rest of my games since thats not on my OS drive)

VS 2008 Pro
Notepad++
