Can't you hear it?
The inspiration:
The scenario:
You have a new computer/fresh install/whatever. What is the core software you put on the computer almost immediately?
My list, broken down by theme:
Basics
- OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit with all the cruft switched off
- PDF reader: foxit reader
- RAR extractor: winzip or 7zip or RAR extract frog. The Frog is more limited but has a smaller footprint.
Internet and media
- Internet: Firefox + adblock + noscript
- Music player: foobar2000, though I'm looking around for an alternative
- Movie player: Combined Community Codec Pack 09.09.09 with Media Player Classic Homecinema included. Handles every format with grace. If you have an older computer, augment with coreAVC. If you're running Linux or Mac, swap out CCCP for MPlayer.
- Torrent client: uTorrent
Getting work done
- LaTeX maker: MikTeX 2.8 + TeXnicCenter
- Data analysis software: Stata 11 + stat/transfer. Warning: not free. Alternatives include SAS or R. R is free. There are others - SPSS, EViews, etc - but Stata and R are really all you need unless you're running huge (>4GB) datasets.
- Text editor: notepad++ or crimson editor
- Office suite: MS Office 2002
- Coding: Netbeans for Java and Visual Studio Express for C++. I could be doing better on this front...
Backups and Antivirus
- Sync utility: Microsoft SyncToy
- Antivirus: AVG Free. If you must use antivirus software, I recommend AVG.
Games
- Steam. Done.
