The alpha version of SOE runs on the PC, but crashes during loading on a macbook pro.
The file was downloaded from the internet and extracted without issue on the mac and then was transferred to the pc using a flash drive.

What could be the most likely causes?

If I use text edit to make changes will it cause a problem? Or is there a text editor recommended to use?

Give me a link and I'll have a look.

TestEdit is fine for editing text files - that's kind of what it says in its title. It doesn't have line numbers or lots of other capabilities that more advanced text editors have. TextWrangler from BareBones is an excellent free version of the classic BBEdit, which I use.
