I was telling someone about Norton Antivirus not being very good, and she says "well, we have it and we haven't had any virus problems."

But...if Norton didn't actually catch the virus, how would they know? A bit of a ...um, what's the word? oxymoron? or maybe a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Not every computer gets attacked by a virus. And not every virus is something that is obvious to the user. So either one of those things could be true.

Yeah.

A question -- a few months ago, I accidentally installed some rogueware on my computer by downloading an ISO file, burning it to a CD, and popping it in the drive. When I did that, all the messages began popping up saying I had a million viruses. How did this work? Did the autoplay do something?

thanks. (10char)

"Attacked by a virus" is something of a misnomer, 99.9% of virus installations can be attributed to user error.
By and large, I guess I'd agree with this. Sadly though, users ain't users these days :mischief: ;)

Sounds like rogueware. Hehe. Pinch of salt. And congrats on your new drink coaster :D

I threw the disc out so I wouldn't accidentally use it again.

The sad part is I didn't know what it was at the time, and I was trying to wipe it or at least backup my files when mom came in and she butted in and reinstall Windows.
