Trade is dependent on merchant's willingness to trade with you (at least, until the state steps in and demands a trade route opened). Since you've killed/harassed the traders that arrived, no one wants to trade with you willingly (though, if the Brits want, they CAN reopen the trade route but the chance of it becoming moderate/major halves for a while).
