Welcome to Sons of Monarchy: Round VII

Our seventh round will feature Pericles of Greece
som7pericles.jpg

Pericles is:
Creative: + 2 :culture: per city and Double Production of Library, Theater, & Colosseum
Philosophical: +100% :gp: , and Double Production of Universities

The Master of Great Scientists. Quick Libraries and quick GP mean that your GS's can come early and often with Pericles. One of my favorite combos.

Greece's Starting Techs & Uniques:
Fishing & Hunting
Odeon: A Colosseum that adds an additional :), +3 :culture: per turn, allows 2 artist specialists, and gives +1 :) from hit singles
Phalanx: An axeman that gains +100% defense against Chariots

The Phalanx no longer has the axe's weakness to chariots, strengthening an early axe rush. The odeon greatly beefs up the colosseum, giving a base total of 2 :) in addition to another :) for each 20% of culture slider, in addition to its culture and artist slots. Two solid but not spectacular uniques

The Start:

No Huts, No Events, All Other Settings Standard
Spoiler Map Type (nothing specific about the map though) :
Fractal Map
Spoiler Map Edit :
Extended the western river 2 tiles north so that the wine was riverside (and thus a 2H2C tile, enticing for settling on the wine)

To play: I am using the same process as the Noble's Club so those familiar with that excellent series just do the same thing. Download the attached zip files & unzip into your BTS/Saves/Worldbuilder folder. Go to Custom Scenarios, select the SoM Save corresponding to your desired difficulty level, and customize game settings as desired. You will need to add techs to barbs. To do so:
Spoiler :
zoom all the way in, open worldbuilder, and add the appropriate techs to the barbarian civilization. This means archery at monarch or higher, hunting at emperor or higher, agriculture at immortal or deity, and the wheel at deity.

Posters are encouraged to include: Thoughts on start/where to settle first and what initial tech path. Later saves can include position at 1 AD, liberalism race as a midgame checkpoint, and the final result. Players are encouraged to post as much as they desire, though screenshots/saves make receiving help easier. Spoiler details about the map and your playing for all details except regarding the opening screenshot.

Good luck, and happy civving!

I'll move the scout to the forest hill 2S of the settler just to make sure, but settling on PH wine on a river seems obvious. Also gets you away from the southern coast which leaves a little more room for a city down there.

Going to play this one at monarch. Need an easy game after Revent's Mansa / Imm.

well if you would say after i_imperator's toku game I would agree, but after Revent's Mansa game?

come on...one of the easiest Immortal maps i had touched even if I didn't finish yet...but the amount of land I got was purely....

This is by far the easiest Immortal map I have ever seen  I started playing it today and by God, it feels like Monarch :p

I'm not even focusing on GP's right now and I'm still ahead in tech

settling on wine seems like best move here unless the west ends up being like desert :p

Boo, I had the forum's current Pericles game!

Though this is participatory and mine isn't, so I guess that's OK :p Pericles is awesome, it's impossible to have too much of him :)

I wasn't clear enough. The game wasn't difficult for imm. I just hate the micro of so many cities and I have to pay attention to detail on imm. It was won as soon as I completed GLH and no early DoW.

Maybe instead of 'easy' I should have used the word 'relaxing'.

Not a problem on Monarch!

Spoiler :
Continental Jewish lovefest with incidental "Asoka is a Buddhist" not mattering much because Asoka seems to suck as an AI, and he's easy enough to keep at Cautious anyway. I was afraid we'd get a SuperSuleiman, but the continent was crowded enough that it didn't matter. Got the Pyramids and the Oracle, expanded to 12 cities (taking a 13th later by culture), then rode the ridiculous production capitals to the important wonders. Two wonder resources within reach plus ridiculous production capital plus Pericles being awesome equals two religions founded, two earned through missionaries, bing, bang, boom, 1840 culture win. Still stayed at tech parity through beeline/trade, but if the game would've gone on much longer then I would've been in trouble.

Good map! Thanks!

Will definitely give this a go after the fun I had with the previous SoM game. Why is everybody 'whining' about where to settle?

Prince/ Settings Standard/ 1808 AD Cultural Victory

Spoiler :
I had only played Pericles once or twice before, and haven't pursued a cultural victory lately, so that is the way I went. It was quite easy actually, diplo was handled, founded three religions spread, built the standard cultural buildings, and only wonders that helped great artists. I popped one great scientist in the beginning for early academy, then all artists except one pesky spy late game. Which in retrospect probably only would have helped me win a couple turns earlier. Fun map and leader.

Ragequit 875BC. Unbelievable! Lost a 98.3% fight with a Phalanx v a Barb Archer and the following turn lost my sole defending Phalanx in Athens to a Barb WARRIOR at 99.9% odds. Barb Warrior took Athens :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Combined odds of nearly 1 in 60000? Bollocks to that, it's definitely not my day. Will restart tomorrow, stupid bloody game!

Go buy some lottery tickets. Your luck has to balance out now with a big swing to the good side.

...okay, I'm sorry, but that is the funniest thing ever. That barb warrior has clearly earned his promotion to Chief Operating Officer of Grunting and Snarling.

You're right, it's very funny now when I think about it (although I wasn't too impressed at the time, have to say). Incidently, the Barb took a Combat1/Medic1 promo next turn so I guess the Barb nation decided he deserved to retire from active duty after that herioic performance!

OMG Choggy, how unlucky can you be :p Incredible. Hate it when that happens. But I have to admit it is funny as hell :D

Monarch/Normal/875BC.

Okay...second time round. Decided to do some serious fogbusting this time round in case the RNG gods still didn't like me. They owe me

Spoiler :

Even so, a random Barb city turned up but am happy to let it grow and then kill it for the gold.

I've stopped here because I'm at my first decision point. Settled 2 cities near Asoka to block him off but there's already a Hindu lovefest going on with him and the Americans and I expect Suileman to follow suit too. I've opened borders with Asoka in the hope that he spreads his religion to me too.

Now, I can either peacefully backfill my borders or prepare for war. I've got the Oracle coming in next turn but don't have Archery yet. so will take CoL either way.

So, options are...

Option 1. Backfilling and wait for Osaka to deliver Hinduism, alongside Confu will lead me down a Culture VC path.

Option 2. Phalanx rush Osaka, take Hinduism if I need to for diplo and try and control Suileman (who true to form already has 7 cities) which will kill my economy but might be my best chance of a Dom win.

Lib 1400AD
Spoiler :

This map, leader, everything about it said peaceful Culture VC....

....so I rushed Asoka with a load of Phalanx and HA's instead (probably the wrong decision, but hey ho). Took 3 cities and split his continent up, unfortunately I couldn't get feudalism before I ran out of steam and he wouldn't give it to me in peace negotiations. Two turns later he peacevassals to Suileman.

I'm currently turtling towards Cuirrs so I can take the pair of them out, its cheesy but as you can see from the screenshot below, my borders are not exactly what you would describe as secure, especially with Asoka culture bombing me. Not sure how this game is going to pan out.
