US has Army Rangers, Navy Seals, Delta Force and other secret forces.

Canada had an Airborne regiment.. Similiar to the british SAS.

But a few crazies tortured and killed a young somali boy while on a peacekeeping mission. Then after that videos came into the spotlight of some of their hazing rituals and general rascist activities.

Our Liberal government in an effort to appease the general public disbanded the regiment destroying 50 years of tradition and history in one fell swoop.

A few morons ruined it for everyone and the politicians allowed themselves to be led around by the publics uneducated knee jerk reactions.

We have another group that I've heard rumours of.. Something more along the lines of Navy SEALS but I can't think of their name..

Yeah my brother is a navy seal and is trying to become of member of Delta Force!

It feels good knowing your brother is apart of an elite military group

You Canadians have the Royal Mounted Canadian Police. I can't speak for the rest of the forum, but I think the Mounties are the coolest thing since law enforcement. I realize they're technically not a paramilitary group(incidentally, the French Foreign Legion and SAS come to mind, as do Spetznaz for the Russians and Mossad for the Isrealis.) but they do train in weapons, survival, and other paramilitary skills. Sort of a rural SWAT team, if you will.

Mounties always get their man.

Rangers lead the way.

I can't think of any other cool unit mottos, except:

Death from above.(Airborne Rangers)

Yeah the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles are da' bomb! DEATH FROM ABOVE!

Excellen. One of my most favourite areas in the world. Brits have SAS (The BEST IMHO), + SBS( Special Boat Squadron). We Aussies and the Kiwis also have SAS, NOT F*****G DINGOS!!!!!!!, and they are among the very best fighting men in the world.
Foreign Legion 2 REP do operate in a semi-special forces/counter terrorist role, but French also have some other units, including Frogman and combat divers ( hmm.. Rainbow Warrior.....)as well as paramilitary types attached to their foreign intelligence wing, the DGSE.
Geramny has the GSG9, not strictly military as they are part of the Federal Border Police, but very famous as counter terrorists. They were established aftyert the Munich 72 icident, as most of u would know. They did the job at Mogadishu in 1977(?Will check)
Russians/Soviets have Spetznaz as already mentioned. They differ from other special forces because of doctrinal differences and their role etc. There was a BBC documentary that, although sensationalist and partisan, provides a starting point, as does books by the GRU defector Victor Suvorov(recommended for insight, albeit biased, into Soviet military). They did a job in Beirut in early 1980s to free captured KGB- cut off heads of kidnappers relatives. Brutal but effective.

Israeli special forces are very, very good, and is hard to find stuff on them, but there are some references(see end of post)
Most secretive of them all is "The Unit", or the Sayeret Matkal. Very good soldiers, and Ehud Barak was their ex commander.
Mossad do have some "agents" who could be seen as spec forces, but their "Katsas" or case officers mainly do intell work rather than "wet work".

This is an area of immense interest to me, and one I am writing a text about, in addition to my thesis, which is on intelligence. There are quite a few sites that have quality info, so I will list a few:
www.isayeret.com/main/menu.htm
www.specwarnet.com
www.specialoperations.com
Or just look for "Special Forces" or "Counter Terrorism" in a search engine.

P.S. They need Special Forces in Civ2, Civ3 or Civ4 or whatever. Just put em in or create the units. They rock, and in real life do a difficult and dangerous job with an enormous degree of honour, professionalism, and elan.

New Zealand has the SAS there cool and there motto is "who dares wins" kinda like the tv show. also a chinok of tanya (red alert) is a elite force ( take the power and the coils and there forked)

Here in Denmark we have two Elite unites:

Jægerkorpset (The hunters)

Frømændene (The frogs)

And they use the english hunter force to train with, but the SAS is still they goal!!!
SAS rocks and are still considered the best unite in the world.

In France "civil" commando team (counter terrorists) is called GIGN. I don't if they have a military elite team.

What's best in the US? The Delta Force, Navy Seals, or Marines? I've heard that Marines are the elite, best of the best...
BTW, you forgot Top Gun at Nellis AFB...

I forgot to tell you that we, French, have the most terrible, efficient and destructive special force of all the world. And there're incredibly a lot of people in this special force. They are called... Strikers.
biggrin.gif

But I can tell you, when French go on strike, ie once every 3 days (I exagerate a bit but it's the rate), all France economic system can be shaken. See? We have the ultimate self-destruct weapon... unfortunately. But since I was in UK, British strikers are quite good, too

The Marines under control of the Navy. Though they are highly trained with proud traditions, they can be described as "merely" amphibious troops. There are two divisions of Marines (though they are usually split up into smaller MEU operating groups.)

The SEALS are used for navy special forces. I think Delta force is more of counter-terrorism force. (Think rescuing hostages.) I could be wrong here about Delta Force.

Top Gun is not a special force. Rather, it is designed to help further train pilots, and it is very prestiges to go their.

Have anyone of you seen Pensacola? It's a tv-serie from US about pilot training or something like that. Anyway I think that they have rely cool planes. Are they "Special Forces"?

maybe "the coastal rangers" would be a better translation the håkans "coast hunters". they use to kick the seals ass in nato exercises.

The Navy Seals are the special forces of the navy and they're the group that will go on ahead landing by sea in enemy territory and fock everything up before the Marines land.
Delta Force i'd say is maybe one of the best trained special forces america has! They're a counter terrorist organization.
Also you remember the Conflict in Panama in 1989? Well Panama held a US citizen living there prisoner and when we invaded panama the Navy Seals landed at their Leaders private airport and blew the hell out of it. And then the Delta Force squadron flew in by helicopter and jumped down on the roof and found the hostage adn blew the door and the guy then they went back up onto the roof and got the hell out of there and almost crashed because they got shoot with machine gun fire in the rutter.
Pretty damn cool
smile.gif

The US Rangers are pretty good though. But i think my favorite Military Squad is the 101st Screaming Eagles
smile.gif
They have some great history.
They're the squad that held out bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

What about special forces of the past?
Nazi Germany's Storm Troops
who else?

Probably the most famous 'ancient' military elite were the Swedish mercenary halbardiers. They were so feared in battle, that a pope called a council, and all of Europe agreed never to screw with the Swiss again, as long as the only force they ever fielded was a private honor guard for the Vatican. That's why Switzerland is neutral.

If you ever go to the Vatican, take a good look at the guards...and if you know any German, French, or Dutch, say hi. The Swiss use all three languages. Most of those guys will probably know Italian as well, given their posting...
