Spilling water/liquid on your laptop

I spilled some water on my laptop. I tried to clean it up the best I could and the computer seemed ok. I went back to watching my Simpsons' episode on DivX but then it made a not so pleasant sound and died. I turned it upside down and put it in front of the heater - still no luck. Now I'm at the library on their computer. What should I do? Just wait and see? Has this happened to anyone else? Happy outcome?

No happy outcomes I'm afraid....you should have tried to dry it more before turning it on.

Put it in a dryer at your local laundrymat

It was already on. I suppose I should have turned it off right away and put it upside down in front of the heater.

You probably didn't dry it enough, and something in there shorted.

Might it still be under warranty, perchance?

Yeah, it sounded like a short of some kind.

It's over a year old now, I thinkt the warranty for 12 months. :undecide:

liquid damage in laptops will not be covered by warranty.

Right, but "it stopped working and I don't know what happened to it" is at least going to get it to a repair center, and if they can figure out that it was water, he'll either pay for repairs or be back to where he's at right now. ;)

It's not necessarily a dead loss you may have lost just one component there and its nocked out the whole system, leave it to dry for a good long while. If it's a series of motherboard shorts and not just say the CPU or the power supply. You could be in for some extensive reconstructive surgery or a whole new build though, my advice wait and see, you'll need to get it looked at, but be careful, some computer stores are little better than shody mechanics, and they may tell you the whole things shot, get a second opinion in that case.

I work with someone who gets frequent water damaged electronics, usually it's just a chip problem and replacing that sorts it out, ocassionaly if your lucky and the shorts are not causing actual damage it may work after drying out, but in a PC this is probably unlikely.

I know from fact that a laptop that is liquid damaged (or fallen) and offered for service without telling it was damaged by an accident; you will get a bill which will be -a lot- higher than if you'd requested non-warranty service.
OTOH, getting a laptop repaired is never cheap. It can easily be more expensive than a brand new laptop. The best advise I can give you is: think about whether a couple of hundreds of dollars is worth it.

Also, does anyone here own one of those "ToughBook" laptops? Are they worth the inflated price (not that I could afford one at the moment anyway, just curious)?

Yeah that's too bad about your laptop. I remember when I was a freshman in university in 2000 or 2001 I spilt Coca Cola all over my brand new iBook and what I immediately did was turn the thing off and rush to the bathrooms to get tissue paper to dry it up as quickly as possible. I also think I turned it upside down and put the tissue under the keyboard and let it sit for about a day. Was sticky afterwards but still works to this very day.

as others have said- you should have cut power straight away.

Narz--who is the manufacturer?
I called the service center at IBM and they sent me a new hard drive when mine went kaput recently. Then they helped me install it and then load up the recovery disks.

Personally, I think the service Apple offers is top notch because you can walk right into a Apple store and get service versus talking to someone on the phone. They've been very supportive anytime my fiancee' had a problem.

sounds like you have a shorted motherboard. if you are skilled and have tiny hands you could replace it with a compatable motherboard from anywhere between 50 and 200 dollars
