Spring Patch Info

Getting more wild card slots gives you more flexibility with policy cards which is a good thing.

meh, I'd just put the diplomatic policy card in there I was planning to use anyways.

I don't. I will often use the slot for an economic card based on the specifics of my current game. I find economic cards very good and having an extra slot for them is great for my playstyle. I pile on all the policy cards that boost tourism at once to help me maximize my culture victory.

I agree rough riders have it rough like sea dogs and is it not weird to have your cavalry good on hills?

It's flavourful. Would be more so if Cavalry normally had a penalty when fighting in Hills.

The revamped Founding Father ability in R&F is pretty nice too. Getting more wild card slots gives you more flexibility with policy cards which is a good thing.

Ironically, there's greater variety to the Diplomacy cards now in R&F. Had this been America's bonus in Vanilla, R&F would have represented a nerf.

I like this as an American ability, though. To me it captures how America goes back and forth between being totally inward looking (using Diplo card slots for Economic cards, etc.) and being engaged with the rest of the planet (using Diplo card slots for Diplo cards).

Agree with the last part, especially in light of Isolationism dark policy.

Most diplomatic cards are crap early on though. It's not really until Cold War until the strong ones show up, and that's really late.

Though in all fairness maybe if CS's didn't fall left and right, they'd be more valuable.

I’d like to start a game tonight, but I am afraid the patch will drop tomorrow and any saved games will fritz out. Any word on a release date yet?

Nothing official has been said. I can't tell much by QA updates. As a precaution, I'm not starting any new games until it comes out, whether tomorrow, Thursday, or next week.

Love the civilization series. But paradox games have started to dominate my pc gaming time more and more by each year.
(Europa universalis, hearts of iron, stellaris, cities skylines) All superb games with insanely good long term support. Just look at what they did with Europa universalis 4.
Just got to love their PR and constant feedback on how the game is progressing.
Even if it should dissapoint you with a setback. You know the developers take you through every hurdle. Firaxis could learn a lot from them.
I`m so bad at handling firaxis silent treatment tactics. Like you dont hear anything for a very long time. Just casual replies not interesting in the slightest on social media.
Dont get me wrong. The civilization series is what made me step into pc gaming. And there is no better game then civ 4 up to date. There is so much to love about the civilization series.
Its just that.. damn firaxis.. just trow me a bone more often.

I couldn't stop myself and started another game (after spending the weekend in the gifts of the Nile scenario), but I'm using no mods that affect saves, crossing my fingers that the patch won't break unmodded saves (they usually don't, but of course there's no guarantee).

my hope is that sneak in a little something new like a Natural Wonder

Or a new, natural special effect! When they snuck in the auroras and tundra/desert winds easter eggs, I was so dumbstruck at the awesomeness of small, hidden gems like those that make this game so visually stunning.

I can’t see myself playing Civ for a while. Possibly not until the next expansion. I might work on some mods though. But that seems daunting.

I’ve googled all those “what else should I play instead of civ” threads, but can’t see anything that will scratch the Civ-itch except maybe earlier versions of Civ. EU4 doesn’t seem to have enough exploration, and I can’t get excited about space games like Stellaris. I don’t like RTS either. I even looked at Diablo III to maybe scratch a different itch, but that seems to have been dumbed down way too much.

I’m not cross with Firaxis. I mean, how can I be? I’m not entitled to anything from them. They don’t owe many anything. I either buy their games or I don’t. But I their relative silence, and failure to address some long standing balance issues (and stufffing England) is just massive turn off.

My guess is a lot of nitty gritty game design issues, and rebalancing or even re-working of some civs, won’t happen in a patch, but only maybe in the next expansion (or after that via mod sets).

I really want to love the Paradox strategy games because I love strategy games. I've tried Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis and Stellaris. But I just can't seem to stick with it. Maybe it is because the games are more involved than what I am used to. There is a complexity that can be a bit daunting at first. I feel like there is a steep learning curve to the games. If I took the time to really learn all the mechanics inside and out, I'd probably be hooked. I think part of the problem is that when a player hits a road block (for example, not knowing how to do something or taking too long to see results), there is tendency to want to quit. That's what happens to me. One thing that I do love about civ is that it is very easy to get into it. Maybe I am just used to the civ series because I have been playing it since civ2 but things like production are very intuitive to me in ways that Paradox games are not.

Sometimes, I wish Firaxis would just take the best from each civ series and combine it into one ultimate civ game. Instead, they seem to want to reinvent civ each time. But as a result, each civ game tends to have something good about it but also new problems and new flaws. For example, civ4 is a great game in many ways but the stacks of doom are horrible. Civ5 introduced some new ideas that were really cool like social policies but also introduced 1upt which was problematic and also global happiness that hampered wide play too much. Civ6 has introduced some cool stuff like policy cards for governments and districts. Rise and Fall introduced some cool stuff too like loyalty and golden ages. But the game still suffers a bit from 1upt, bad AI, and horrible diplomacy.

I don’t know. Each Civ game seems better than the last. If R&F didn’t kill England, or if a few balance changes were made to Military Tactics and Pikes (and therefore Norway and Japan) I’d be playing this game to death. Hence the reason for thinking about modding.

Overall, yes, I do think that each civ iteration moves the franchise in the right direction. But the games do add some not so good stuff too. But for me, civ6 would be the best civ if it had good diplomacy, added production queue and some automation, added revolutions and civil wars, allowed small stacks of military units, and more units in the tech tree.

I haven’t played earlier versions, so happy to defer to your judgment.

But has Civ VI actually introduced anything bad, as opposed to not (yet) including anything or things still being buggy?

I don’t want to see production queues - but that’s personal I realise. Diplomacy isn’t bad, just maybe not working as intended and lacking some transparency.

Civ VI just seems to be missing some content and lacking some polish. What has been introduced is pretty solid.
