Spring Patch notes

Between costing 20 production less, better comba modifiers, and the commando buff (+1 movement) they aren't bad units now in a vacuum. However they still suffer from the fact that you need to research military tactics and you can't hard build them. Military tactics doesn't lead to any other techs, and onyl gives access to certain military units and Huey. 275 science is a steep price to pay. I think they should look into reworking the tech tree a bit in this regard.

That being said, its still a fun and flavorful unit and I will use them en masse when playing Norway, even if it's not the most efficient route to victory.

Ok it's not that difficult to research military tactics. I think the game might be a little more strategic if there were more dead end techs and upgrading units was tougher. These units can still be produced fairly quickly via chopping or faith buying so this isn't a big deal IMO unless you are trying to post the earliest times possible.

Looking forward to read through your experiences. Wont have much time to play for some time. And i’m playing on epic gamespeed so it should take like 2 weeks for me to finish a whole game.

Fooling around a bit when the patch reached us. AI Persia sure knows what it is doing with his warriors and slingers. Very pretty surround on my capital. He did not bother to touch my units which is a smart thing to do.

all of my production buy , faith purchase and production build buttons are gone after the patch. both old saves and new games. What gives?

Started first game (trying England...how bad can it be? :p ). Start on a peninsula 9 tiles from Gilgamesh. Get boxed in quickly and give up when he gets War Carts and I still have nothing but Warriors.

I thought this starting on top of another Civ crap was supposed to be solved a few patches ago? POOR first impression...

I actually think the tech and, to a lesser extent, the culture trees are in need of a major reworking. The tech tree has too many gaps, allowing too quick of jumps in power. Additionally, there should definitely be fewer dead ends. There are some decent mods out there that work on this, but I'd like to see something done in the baseline game

... England needs a total redesign, it's currently a jumbled mess of awkward fixes.

@Uncle_Joe Pretty bad is my guess.

I'd be interested in what people think of Norway, Japan and Spain after this patch. The first two are my other Favourite Civs after England, and I thought if they got good maybe I'd give R&F a go.

A few random thoughts on the Patch:
  • Fascism now gets a 50% production bonus for building units. Does that make it the go to Civ for building Air units?

  • The loyalty bonus for Religion is very interesting. You can recruit a Great Prophet, and then hang on to it until you have Holy Sites in all your cities. Once all your cities and HSs are up, you can found your religion, get Era points (which will hopefully trigger a Golden Age) and at the same time convert all your cities to your religion and get the extra +3 loyalty. Proceed to flip all your neighbours (particularly if you can then spam religious units).

  • Conquest now easier if you have a religion, because with some inquisitors and missionaries you can gain an extra +3 loyalty for captured cities. Not game changing, but looks fun.
  • Loyalty bonus for religion is good for Spain (as someone else pointed out earlier). Probably also handy with Poland's culture bomb ability, which can also trigger religious flips.

  • Bit sad India's Dharma ability doesn't interact with the religion / loyalty mechanic. I'd like to see them ignore the negative part.

  • Nerfing Ecommerce is fine. I like that its now more neutral whether you're using it for international or domestic routes, although you'd probably be focused on international routes when you get it anyway.

  • Leaving aside the balance implications for Seondeok's Hwarang ability, it's probably going to be more fun from a gameplay point of view (do you go tall or wide?).

  • How did Firaxis rebalance Medieval Melee but not Pikemen?? There right next to them guys, c'mon!!

  • There seems to be way more bug fixes and quasi-bug fixes than balance changes. Were these and the changes to Casus Belli the cause of all the delay? Seems possible to me.

  • Berserker rebalancing seems very strong. You're bonus for attacking is now double your minus for defending. A +4 from Oligarchy would also mostly eliminate the negative, and give you +14 on attack. There's still some issues around tech placement and hard building, but Berserkers look a lot more fun now for all their effort. Particularly if you get the +1 movement promotion.

  • I'm surprised Era score overflow hasn't been tweaked. I don't like how the game currently discourages you from doing cool stuff because you don't want to waste Era score. Dealing with that might have been too much work for this patch though.

It seems they “fix” 2 or 3 major complaints from this forum in each patch, or at least awknowledge it. Maybe the summer patch will address Military Tech and air units if we keep asking for it. England got adjusted (not fixed) this time because it was constantly talked about and universally wanted

Wow. The universe is a confusing place.

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.”

I'll be interested to see if anyone can actually use Berserkers in a game in a way to help them win. Still have to build them and ever so slowly move them to where the fighting is. They need to change the movement bonus to apply when you are at war, and the +10/-4 be reversed when outside enemy teritory.

While I suspect it doesn't, has anyone tested to see if the Berserker changes effect the scenario? If they did, it'll be worth another play (so far I've conquered France and the British Isles easily enough, but the Iberian peninsula has been a roadblock).

I forget, can you play just one more turn with a scenario? I rather want to conquer everything.

The patch isnt downloading for me. Anyone else who has this issue?

Initially mine was scheduled for hours later, for some reason. I went into download management and manually initiated it. Not sure it's the same issue though, as downloads management had already recognized that it was there.

Should not need a major patch to implement basic balance changes.

- reduced Knight strength by 3
- reduced Spearmen cost by 20
- reduced Pikemen cost by 60
- increased Pikemen strength by 3
- increased AT strength by 5
- increased Modern AT strength by 5
- increased Machine Gun ranged sterngth and strength by 5
- reduced penalty Siege receives against units

Hmm, checked the game again and it seams I got the patch. But the norway berserker still say 7/7 in the info box when you create a game.
Started a game and it works, but still not sure if the patch is in or not :p.

Could someone please check if The norweigen Berserker still say 7/7 damage when you create a game?

It does for me. I wonder if its simply something they missed, or if my update is buggy.
