Spyware Victim

I ran it on my home PC last night and found 33 spywares, including an old secure networking app.

Thanks for the tip.

or anyone else familiar with ZoneAlarm...

Will this program also block incoming ICQ messages? From the way it's set up, it would appear so.

Anyone puzzling about the validity of a suspicious startup application can likely find it (with an explanation) on this list:

Startup Applications

The list is also useful in identifying obsolete or useless apps that could be slowing the system. I recommend everyone to check all of their apps against this list. As of yet, there's no software that can do this for us.

But how do you stop some of these applications from starting up? I have WinME and I can't find out how to cut down on what starts up...

There are several ways to disable items from starting, and you don't need to download another gizmo. Read this page, from the same site.

I don't know what you mean. I have run ICQ while running Zone Alarm and I get all the messages I would normally get. If you want to stop ICQ spam (the advertisement messages) you have to choose a few options under ICQ, I don't know any program that can stop advertisers from sending you ICQs.

Your best bet to stop that is the choose the option to only receive messages from people on your user list.

EDIT: Sorry, I made a mistake when i first replied. (Thanks for pointing that out Sean Lindstrom :)) If you want to mess around with your startup items, goto 'run' and then type in msconfig. That should bring up a window. Click the "startup" tab on that. Then you get to choose what to check and uncheck (what programs load at startup and which ones dont.) Once again, don't remove programs if you don't know what they are / do. You can screw up your system.

If you don't have msconfig: If you want to mess around with your startup items, and remove a lot of them, there are plenty of third-party software programs out there that will let you edit your startup folder.

I personally would use Xteq Setup, http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10127489.html?tag=lst-0-1

This program is a Windows Tweaking program that will let you edit most anything in Windows. I highly reccommend you don't change any settings unless you know what you are doing, because it can mess up your computer if you put the wrong settings.

There are also programs out there for just changing your startup items, I don't personally know any, but I'm sure download.com has plenty of them available.

Ah yeah, another fault of WinME - the lack of msconfig.

I use WinME and have MSCONFIG in the system folder. Maybe I downloaded a Win98 version and forgot, or maybe one just has to look for it. It works fine.

Oh does it? Hmm... you're probably right. Maybe I'm just confusing myself with Windows 2000. My bad.
