The only thing holding me back from enjoying this game is stability. My empires keep collapsing. Is there a way to turn this feature off? Either that or see what I'm doing wrong?

Look at the Economic advisor to see a brief overview of your stability, hovering over a value will show you the individual reasons why you have that score. Tell me all of the negative individual reasons and their value and I'll tell you how to avoid them.

Some general tips regardless:

Spoiler Stability Tips :

  1. Keep Core population high and non core low. Expansion instability is the main source of instability and is a simple fraction: Non-core pop / Core pop. The denominator is multiplied by the era you're in, so higher tech means you'll have higher room for expansion. Historical cities count for less on the numerator and foreign cities more.
  2. Moral of the story for expansion stability is to grow your core and keep your non core low in population, and to expand into historical areas. Micromanage the BFCs of your cities at the edge of your core to eat up tiles from non core cities.
  3. Economic stability is one of two main sources for positive stability. Keep your economy (as represented by (ommerce) growing (cottages are the easiest way).
  4. Civic stability is your second source of positive (and negative) stability. Pair up appropriate civics and keep incompatible ones separate.
  5. Foreign stability is a quagmire and almost always you'll get a malus from bad relations.
  6. A lot of civics have extra effects on various parts of the stability formula. As examples, Nationhood gives you stability for being at war, Fanaticism for being at war with other religions, Multilateralism decreases stability when at war and gives stability for defensive pacts. Free Enterprise doubles stability bonuses and maluses from economic stability. Public welfare halves.
Moral of the story is that most stability problems are caused by expansion. Grow your core well and things tend to be easy.

Orbii has great tips, the expansion factor has always been the important one for me because it tends to be negative.

beginner tip from a beginner: don't settle the first city outside the core. Like I did in my second DoC game, with egypts first city in the historical area instead of core. The empire crashed always within 30 turns.

Yeah, same. I finally found world builder but I couldn't find this "advanced options" he was talking about.

I see no such thing. edit: do I do this within dawn of civ or just the base game? I am looking in dawn of civ for reference.

No, I know how to get in world builder. I'm saying I can't find the option they're talking about within it.

In addition to what 1SDAN said, I recommend you study thoroughly the Stability Influence Factors section in the Civilopedia. Everything you need to know to manage your stability is basically there.

That was a joke, Leoreth was telling you to go to the main menu and unload the mod entirely.

the game options icon doesn't appear within world builder for me. Mine doesn't have all of those icons.
If you don't have all of those icons then you're probably not playing Rhyes and Fall Dawn of Civilization, nor are you playing Rise of Knoedel or Quality Mod Compilation.

Yes, building a Jail and Courthouse in every non-core city helps a huge amount.
