Stalingrad

I also came up with that idea some time ago
(you would be playing Soviet of coarse)
but since i´m not a good scenario desigener and i really suck with graphics so...
I was going to make it for original Civ II
without events because I have a mac and the original version of Civ II doesn´t support events.txt files

Hey fellas,

Its been awhile since I've posted about my progress. Slowly but surely I have been tinkering on this thing, and it is really starting to take shape nicely. The AI has had no problems with some of the more odd things I am having it do.

I still have this annoying dither effect going on... small bits of ocean and also the white cursor get stuck on certain graphics. Once the screen shifts it goes back to normal, so its no big deal. Hopefully you guys can spot the problem during playtesting.

She is almost ready to be tested, at least the opening stages that is. I still have a few things to decide about and then implement. I am not sure just how I want to cover reinforcements. Should they be based on merit or turn #? By merit, I mean that you kill this or that unit, and then are given some reinforcements depending on what you killed. But beyond that, I still have to figure a way to keep the reinforcements semi close to the front. I don't wanna give you an infantryman and make you move him across the whole map in order to get in the fray.

So we aren't too far away from the opening stages of testing, though I won't ask for people just yet. But jsut know that it is comming...

I have looked high and low for this. I assumed it was in the game.txt and I looked there several times. The file is huge so I might have missed it. I want to know where to locate the text:

"The firtile XXX empire now has XXXXX citezens"

A simple question indeed, and I can almost swear it should be in the game.txt. Any thoughts?

There's a search ability in Wordpad that is most useful for this kind of thing. -I have been searching high and low through the .txt-files very much in the same way, for these kind of petty details. But then I disovered the nice and sweet search function, and now those days are gone...

Thanks Morten, Yeah thats what I ended up using... Now for another question...Is there a way in events.txt to put a message within the border... like a title-type one?

What I want to know is if there is a method to do this within typing a codesimmilar to this:
@IF
TURN
turn=1
@THEN
TEXT
^FROM THE DESK OF OKW:
^
^Herr General,
^
^ Your 6th Army...............
ENDTEXT
JUSTONCE
@ENDIF

I want the 'From the desk of OKW' to be inside the popup windows border, and also to be in that different greyish text. You know, just run any old game of Civ and you'll see what I'm talking about...

I know that the reason the text gets there in the first place is because it is a part of the game.txt. The message is an "@Message" type one in the game.txt and that the text after the '@' is what is displayed.

Is there possibly something to add within the event.txt's code to get the same effect?

Thanks,
FMK.

Let me know if this is clear enough..

I am wondering if tech obsolescence affects event-generation. I'll explain further by example:

Tech A- Given to the Germans at the start. In the events, if Germans have tech A then create units... let's say 20 miles outside the city.

I want the Germans to continue to recieve units every turn via having this tech, untill they earn another tech by capturing something. This new tech would be Tech B, and it would make tech A obsolete. Could I then make an event to move the unit generation spots to.. say 10 miles outside the city? I would of course want the units to no longer be generated at the 20 mile point.

Could this be taken care of by adding another 'if' to the code? Somehow possibly asking for the presence of Tech B before the generation of Tech A units?

What you have described here is the tech trigger - there is no way to stop the the repeating events once they are triggered because there are is no 'OR' or 'AND' implimentation in the limited macro language.

Now that I've told you it can't be done, let me give you a way around this particular problem. What you can do is to change the spot where the reinforcements appear to a pond (ocean) when Tech B is discovered. The units will still try to appear each turn but can't. If you have no sea in your map, all the better - you can make the 'denied' area look like whatever you want.

I have used this technique several times in ST-BAQ(Borg ion storm generator) and ST-DM (dominion and cardasian shipyards) without a hitch.

What I ended up doing is giving event-generated units multiple locations for placement, then I placed 0-move enemy units on those particular squares... but I gave those 0-move units nearby homecities. This gives the effect of when you capture city A, the 0-move unit that is blocking the square that your units should be generated in is disbanded. Now instead of receiving your replacements at the rear of the battlefield, the reinforcements will now have the effect of moving along with the player's successes. There is in fact 3 separate 'paths' that the event-generated units can take. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>

Big shout out to Henrik from Sweden for that idea. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0>

Whats up fellas,

So it has been awhile since my last update. Manythings have changed...all for the better hopefully. Currently, I am in the initial phases of playtesting the opening stages of the game. Since the scenario will have multiple outcomes, and paths through the game, I need to have different events for each path. I have done this in my head and all I am doing now is letting a few kids play what I have to get a feel for the span of turns needed. Once I get a feel for how the player generally progresses through the opening rounds, I can move on and set turn #'s for events that occour later in the game.

I have also begun putting together the winter files. This is of course new terrain, units and rules files.

Things are comming along great, and I never though'd I'd be able to take this thing this far along. It is really looking and sounding good. As soon as I can get a feel for the timespan, it is a matter of writing up the last of the events, plugging in some winter stuff, and getting my friend to write a batch program for me. I will then ask for a few playtesters to help me with the overall scen playtest once I am up to there. If things keep going as they are now, that just might not be too far away!

I will also be putting together a 'preview' for CF if I can find the time, and in there you might see some things that you'll like ;D

Thanks,
-FMK.

wait a second, why is your registered name brand new? I could swear i've seen you around before... I must be getting old.

Anyways, FMK is in the middle of writing some of the last events files. The play testers are done with it as far as I can tell, or they've been playing the game since before civ3 was released. For more news, check out the scenario league at apolyton, i think the mirror thread over there was just bumped too.

edit: found the most recent thread about it at poly.

this other thread is almost as out of date as this one, but i found the link for you anways. i know there is another even older thread, but that would be more than 100 days out of date.

I've had that handle since the Commodore 64 days 1982+ and on Apolyton. Only recently signed up on Civfanatics

Hey all. Yes, I know people want to play Stalingrad. That is the one thing that keeps me going. I seem to work in spirts... that is, do a whole lot for a few days..get burnt out... start up agin etc.

I had a really good idea fail miserably recently, which broke my concentration completely. I still might be able to work it in, but frustration continues... It is people that keep asking me about it that keeps me going when my patience slips...

I'd rather wait and do it right the first time, then have to release it and make innumerable updates to it. Though, nothing can be expected to be perfect the firt time out.
