StarNES Part I: Rise of Galactic Empires

The Jamestown Incident - Scandal for the EF

Chancellor Fredrik Wilhelm's holonet address to the people, circa 2305 AD.

"Citizens, today is a difficult day for me in particular. Long has the government harbored a secret, a secret which today I have just found out. This secret brings with it deep implications for the government of earth, for it involves our own people.

Perhaps you will recall the aliens of which we have split the system of Neu Konigsberg. Well, you will be shocked to discover that these are not aliens at all. They are humans. I know, you are deeply shocked, and so am I. You are asking yourself how, and I will explain:

Long ago, about 50 some odd years or so, the government embarked on a secret colonizing program, to establish vanguard colonies for future exploration, and to test the feasibility of a colonial venture. The colonies turned out very profitable and accounted for the economic wonders of the Franconian era. However, soon the people on these colonies became rebellious, stumbling on an antique copy of 'Tacitus'. They became lovers of the classical ideal, and looked at the Roman Republics of antiquity for inspiration. Secret deals were brokered, secret treaties signed, and the colony was abandoned. Now it seems they have developed FTL travel, and are now just as strong as we are.

Chancellor Fredrick Wilhelm addressing aboard the shuttle Scharnhorst, on a course to Neu Konigsberg, to meet our new nieghbors."

not quite- read my own "genisis" story- the colonis tbegan th ecolonby with the want of creating a classical ideal, not stubiling upon afterwards, and certinally not from a military/ political diologue of the 1st century Roman empire :p

I'm working on my link-fu. Map currently consists of 12 web pages and growing...

I'm not on the first page yet! gahh! how much money do I have?

And I just realized something... Global Nexus, you're assuming all the races breathe the same atmosphere, which every star happens to have a planet with. Otherwise, how come anyone can colonize any star, not to mention invasions!?

If somebody wants a look at what I'm doing, unzip this file into a folder and open "Mappage.html". It's not that hard.

www.geocities.com/erikmesoy/index.html

Crappy, but working. Now to add and track a billion pages.

EDIT:
Not wanting to add another post, I just say... Global Nexus, get on AIM! I have a bunch of questions, such as my economy.

Well, can you think of a better way to execute it? :p :mischief:

Well... No.

The Tau Federation, seemingly thinking that all other races would understand them, attempted to make contact with the Tectons, a nearby race of silicon-based intelligent lifeforms.
Ooh! I want my race to be germanium-based, and still somehow breathe oxygen!

And add me to the front page so I can send orders already!!!

Can I join?Do I need to write stories?
If I can I`ll be these guys:

Civilization Name:Progenitors
Name [Player]:Ruler:Seth Av'eri
Trait:Scientific
Government:Empire
Credits: 5
Background:The Progenitors were an advanced race before a disastourous event that virtually reduced their great civilization to an agricultural world.A mad scientist/evil genius had plan to take control of the planet using his weapon of mass destruction,an unknown experimental highly destructive bomb.Agencies were close to finding out his location and thus he didnt have much time to study the effects of his weapon. He detonated his bombs on few specific locations of the planet and they caused a lot of damage, but they had a side-effect he didnt predict. They have generated immense EMP pulses that shutdown the whole planet. This threw the world in disorder and long 500 years of anarchy. However they united and started rebuilding their world.A thousand years have passed since then and they are back on their feet, altough they are not as advanced as they used to be.The Progenitors are humanoids that look a lot like Terrans, but with a few differences.Evolution has taken an interesting path with the Progenitors.Progenitors with red eyes are great soldiers because of their great strength and endurance(35% of pop),those with green eyes are great workers because they have average strength and intelligence(35% of pop),those with yellow eyes are great scientists because of their amazingly high IQ(19% of pop),those with blue eyes are like born leaders because they have IQ of an scientist and a strength, endurance of a warrior(10% of pop). Those with purple eyes have telepathic/psychic powers(1% of pop).

Yes I know lame background.

Nice. GN one question, I thought that since I was diplomatic i had Basic Translation automatically and could thus communicate with any aliens?

And about the anyone can colonize a star.......surely, by now, with FTL travel, they can quite easily (or maybe not so, but still able to) terraform the worlds, at least to an extent. That solves your problem I think?

lol imagine you could use your own people to build computers :crazyeye:

Anyway,do I got the FTL tech because Basic gravity control requires FTL?
Also can I start in the upper left corner?

I`m sending orders soon.

Do the size of the rings around stars mean anything like more developed/ colonized?

Oh well, Thats as much as Fredrick knows, as the original report has been altered to shine a better llight on the Federation ;)

Yes, everyone starts with FTL Drive.

GN! I SUMMON YOU! RETURN AND POST!

OOC: Shouldn't my secondary race be Purple-Skin Aleans?

The percentages mean planetary defenses, right?

IC:

SPACE EXPLORER REPORT : FTL YEAR 5

VALEN (SYSTEM): No contacts. No sentient life present. Four planets. One immediately habitable planet: Valen-1 (+3). Overall Rating: +3. Recommendation: Initiate VCC.

PAREN (SYSTEM): No contacts. No sentient life present. One planet. No immediately habitable planets. Recommendation: Leave it alone for the time being.

OROS (SYSTEM): No contacts. No sentient life present. Semisentient life present on Oros-3. Nine planets. Three immediately habitable planets: Oros-3 (+2), Oros-4 (+1), Oros-5 (+4). Overall Rating: +7. Recommendation: Initiate Major VCC.

ZAKRA (SYSTEM): Sentient life present on Zakra-1: Zakra Siphilae. Two planets. One immediately habitable planet: Zakra-1 (+2). Overall Rating: +3. Recommendation: Initiate MC.

ADDITIONAL:

ZAKRA SIPHILAE (SPECIES): Location: Zakra-1. Society: Hive-based. Ruler(s): The Queens. Technolevel: Primitive. Psychical Formula: HM2Ch3R4Tel0 Recommendation: Initiate MC, try to use telepathy to break their society and put it under our control. Reasoning: Forced labor uses.

TELRAH (SPECIES): Location: Telreuth. Society: Unknown. Ruler(s): Lord Addam Tetru. Technolevel: Advanced (M+2). Psychical Formula: OM5Ch5R4Tel2 Recommendation: Establish good diplomatic relations. Reasoning: Potential allies, significant threat if otherwise.

Diplomacy:

From: Alean Dominion of Aron and Associated Colonies
To: Telrah Empire

We accept your greetings and return it. We hope for beneficient diplomatic relations.

Orders:
- Invest three credits into Basic Gravitational Control to finish research.
- One credit into VCC on Valen (SW Claimed Star System). Propagandize the colonization of that system as neccessary for our biological survival via the Collective Mind (telepathic internet).
- One credit into VCC on Oros (SE Claimed Star System). Propagandize the colonization of that system as neccessary for our biological survival, also propagandize the ranking promotion opportunities due to the creation of new major Alean communities which will need local leaders and such.
- Have our best telepaths launch a telepathic attack on Zakre Siphilae. This will be hard, but our BEST telepaths should be up to the task. The goal of this attack is to remove the pseudotelepathic control of the Queens over the Hives - destroy their coordination, undermining the very foundation of their society, and then, in the chaos (during which their planetary defenses, if present, will obviously enough be disabled as well), launch an attack. Our ten scouts will descend on the planet, destroy planetary defenses and land a group of a hundred soldiers near the location(s) of the enemy queens. They will use our superior technology and the enemy lack of coordination to capture or kill queens (ALL of them. We cannot take risks of having at least one of them survive and be free). Make sure that at least three queens are captured (the more-the better), and later exported to study them. Try to either a) put them under our control, b) create a device that could carry out their functions or c) transfer their functions to one of our telepaths. After one of those solutions is found, use it to establish control over Zakra and its population. Use the Zakra Siphilae, now under our control, as forced labor - on their planet at first. They will make efficient miners - miners about which any modern Earth democracy could only dream as they can't go on strikes. Do not send in any of our colonists yet, but keep a military garrison to make sure everything goes right.

<SNIP I removed what I considered an impolite post where I gave my opinion on the "telepathy attack". Replaced with a great story post, SNIP>
(Oh, das, it's "psychic", not "psychical", that's like saying "most bestest".)

Arkatus Headquarters, Kreatel Proxy and Primary Planetary Governors present
Proxy Tenarrub: We are assembled to discuss the reports from the initial scouting teams. They report acceptable conditions in all systems so far, one occupied and three empty but suitable for colonization. Governor Belmanon, you had received the last report?
Belmanon: I have. That is why the Kreatel asked me to call this meeting. I ask that Governor Takandiso speak first, as dib* has the report on the colonized systems.
Takandiso: To summarize: A race called the Oou was observed. They are primitive in great measure. They appear almost unable to defend their own planet. A minor item typical of one of their cultures was sent me. I present it for your enjoyment.
Dib presented a small carved likeness of a two-legged, smooth-skinned beast.
Governor Kribera: And what aspect of their culture would this represent? Religion, thought, impulse, or luxury?
Takandiso: It is one of the planetside beasts that the Oou hunt - refer to the dossier for full information.
Spoiler Dossier on System Oulus :
Report from Scouting Group Sebalit, may the Kreatel guide us.

System: 3-4-7-D, informally known "Oulus" after sole native race
Star Type: Red Giant
Planets:
*Two subplanets in inner ring.
*Oulus I, utterly inhospitable due to liquefying temperatures
*Oulus II, a raging inferno of shredded stone. Possibly habitable long term. No life sighted.
*Oulus III, Oou homeworld. See sub-file...
*Asteroid Belt*
*Oulus IV, covered in hydrocarbon and hydroxylic substances. Habitable post-terraforming level 2. Extremely valuable.
*Oulus V, gas giant with two ring systems.
*Oulus VI, frozen rock. Terraformable level 5 but of low value.
*One subplanet in outer ring.

Overall System Rating: Krelna (Second of seven ratings where seventh is utterly uninhabitable)
Kribera: Impressive. Nine planets.
Belmanon: Here is the last dossier I received. It was fortituous indeed.
Spoiler Dossier on System Dibana ("Peace") :
Report from Scouting Group Losak, may the Kreatel guide us.

System: 6-3-2-A, informally "Dibana" ("Peace") for high quality of worlds
Star Type: Medium Yellow
Planets:
*One subplanet in inner ring*
*Dibana I, rock core, surface covered in liquid silicon. Possibly of use for mining operations later.
*Dibana II, mixed-elemental semi-liquid surface, several valuable elements seen. Habitable post-terraforming level 3.
*Asteroid Belt*
*Dibana III, planet with low organic life. (mainly prokaryotes/eukaryotes, some coastal lichen) Extremely habitable. Recommend immediate colonization. Stable weather, few valuable elements.
*Dibana IV, medium organic plant life, low to medium habitability, unstable weather, some valuable elements.
*Asteroid Belt*
*Dibana V, rock giant. Extremely stable, mining operations should be prioritised.
*No subplanets in outer ring*

Overall System Rating: Pardupar (Highest rating)
Governor Tarka: Extremely alluring. I will be hoping for a transfer there as soon as colonization has come to the point where the government needs a branch there.
Tenarrub: It shall be granted. Belmanon, would you present the third report?
Belmanon: Yes. The scout group Garho (meaning corresponds to "Yukon Ho!") named it the same, since the planets are not quite hospitable but suited for bold initiatives.
Spoiler Dossier on System Garho :
Report from Scouting Group Garho, may the Kreatel guide us.

System: 4-4-3-B, informally "Garho!"
Star Type: Aged Orange
Planets:
*Two subplanets in inner ring*
*Garho I, hemisplit (half boiling/half freezing), habitable post-terraforming level 5.
*Asteroid Belt*
*Garho II, medium amount of elements, no organic life due to mildy toxic and extremely thin atmosphere.
*Garho III, geologically moribund. Little support for life unless planet core is reactivated.
*Garho IV, cold but volcanic. High mineral content from volcanoes, but high risk. Habitable post-terraforming level 2.
*Loose Asteroid Field*

Overall System Rating: Krolo (Fourth rate)

Belmanon: The next report is of a more strategic matter. While we have seen a few signs of intelligent life in all directions, there is a cofirmed one in this direction: Rho differs by only two points relative to the system in question, even if pi is more than twice as large.
Spoiler Dossier on System Yundeli :
Report from Scouting Group Mound, may the Kreatel guide us.

System: 6-5-6-D, informally "Yundeli" ("Red Spear") after the star's harsh rays
Star Type: Red Giant
Planets:
*No subplanets in inner ring*
*Yundeli I, inferno conditions, of little value for either mining or colonization
*Asteroid Belt*
*Yundeli II, constantly experiencing seismic shock (aka "not-earth-quakes") but reasonable for mining if this can be overcome
*Yundeli III, large ice world, no valuable elements but in lower range of habitation area
*Yundeli IV, consisting of over 60% methane and useless for most purposes.
*One subplanet in outer ring*

Overall System Rating: Irkan (Fifth rate)
Kribera:You are not the sort to leave the worst for last, Belmanon. We eagerly await the last report
Tarka: <acidly> Since you seem to know so much, why don't you deliver it?
Tenarrub: Shush. Dib can.
Kribera: Indeed. The fifth system is highly unusual, and was the first to be scouted, which is why I know of it.
Spoiler Dossier on System Eia ("Strange") :
Report from Scouting Group Rikva, may the Kreatel guide us.

System: 3-3-9-F, informally Eiadol ("Strange Light") after the star
Star Type: Neutron Star
Planets:
*Four subplanets in inner ring*
*Eiadol I-A and I-B, both mildly radioactive, located at Lagrange Point 3 with respect to each other. Hot but habitable.
*Asteroid Belt
*Eiadol II, weakly radioactive, habitable but of little value.
*Eiadol III, rock planet with thin ice sheet, very weakly radioactive, stable and easily habitable if heat-retaining bases are used.
*Asteroid Belt*
*Eiadol IV, standard ice giant
There was silence for a moment.
Tenarrub: The planets are different enough that they should all be colonizable. Search for volunteers, but remember to finish the energy storage project too. Colonization will be much more efficient with it.

*The Arkatus do not have "gender" as such, and the forms "he" and "she" do not exist, instead this transcription is used.

About the System Guide: The first numbers are (the Arkatian equivalents of) rho, theta and pi - used for interstellar coordinates. The letter designates the general star type in this way:
A = Yellow or Yellow-Orange, highest quality
B = Dark Orange or Red, good quality
C = Binary system or Green, unusual but medium quality
D = Red Giant, common but low quality
E = Dwarf star
F = Neutron star
G = "Odd socks" such as trinary yellow systems and blue supergiants.

:: END STORY POST ::
Holy hell, I will have such a problem keeping all the stars and scouts groups straight. Oh well. It'll be worth it if I get any bonuses from huge stories.

GN, care to comment on relative star frequency?

Das where did you get those 5 credits, didnt you spend them last turn? You have a stabilized economy which gives you 1 CR per turn and there have been only two turns.

EDIT:*hits head against wall* Nevermind just realized that you have 3 claimed systems which equal 3 CR,sorry.

I have a question about my race, the Riddla. It says that we aren't visible to the Terran because of a difference of light spectrums. Does this apply to everyone else too?

Your guys can see in visible and infared. The description says nothing about you being invisible. :p

Oops, misread it. Great, I have glow in the dark eyes

I've been having headaches over the past few days...can everyone accept that they have 6 Credits to spend regardless? We've had weather changes and I'm SURE it's my sinuses, since they always act up when this happens. Also consider it an apology for the extended number of difficulties I've been having.

Cleric: it's always good to see people wanting to join, but are you certain this is the time you want to? Next turn I'll introduce Organizations into the mix, and you can choose to become one of those. Organizations range from pirate to privateer to mercenary and even privately-owned, government-funded submilitary agencies. This is just a suggestion -- if you would prefer a civ, I have absolutely no complaints. ^_^

Erik: Eh, technological advances can account for the breathing. Ever played Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? Planet has air that humans can't breath -- the entire game is played on a world without any breathable air outside of suits, vehicles, and bases. So there. :p

By the way...great story. Your stats are now up, too, though you'll have six credits like everyone else here in a few minutes. I love your story, expect things to happen with them. ^^ And...relative star frequency? oo Wait, are you referring to the types of star, the frequency of them showing up? If so...well, that differs in different areas of the galaxy...so I can't say. >> Let you decide, eh? Unless you need me too.

blackheart: The differences in the rings is just human error on my part. ^^;;

Espirito: My apologies. You shall be compensated next update.

All: Speaking of which. Next update is Saturday or Sunday. Only a major life changing event could stop it. Or an ice storm which wipes out my power. But those aren't likely to happen.

Global Nexus, your PM box is full.
Six credits? Great, 4 on VCCs and 2 on completing Energy Banks research.

BTW, isn't the "economy" stat rather useless, given that in a few turns my economy may be producing 2Cr/turn and my planets 12/turn. I'd almost suggest you multiply economy level by number of planets, since they produce up to 5 each, and a maximum of 2 is useless to that.
