Steam can't connect, Civ won't start

A lot of people have been unable to start Steam today with the error message that it can't connect to the steam network. I am one of them, even though I can readily access Steam's website, its client won't connect -- and Civ won't start.

This b.s. about being able to play Steam even without an Internet connection is bogus, apparently. :/ Feels like a little Assassin's Creed.

You should have set steam to offline mode, then you would not have these problems.
