Steam Global Gameplay Stats

Do these statistics also involve the players who play in "offline mode" or only the ones in s***m online mode ?

These statistics are only updated when being in online mode and playing the game, as far as I know.
What remains unknown is if the total number of *players* is updated if you start from the very beginning being in offline mode.

Personally I assume that all these figures are based on the number of online players, due to the fact that the update is made only when you play online.

Supposedly (so I've heard) Steam tracks your achievements while in offline mode and updates them when it goes back online again, but I've never tried it.

This is true, but you have to PLAY online. Being online with Steam is not enough.

Also, a lot of people play in Offline Mode, for a number of reasons, and you don't get achievements while you're offline.

Edit: Whoops, didn't see the posts above me, but I have played several games in offline mode (I have a laptop and keep it in offline mode often), even while connected to the internet, or when not connected to the internet at all.

I got no achievements during those games despite accomplishing them. So what I would do is just save a game right before I did the achievement and load it up later, get the achievement, then delete it. Well, I did that for some of them.

lol and people like me almost never finish a game. I have a HUGE problem getting frustrated or bored when i play any civ to a certain point and restart. The early building of my civilization is my favorite i guess. ;)

Yeah, in Civ 4 and Civ 3, I almost always stopped playing around Modern Era. I didn't really enjoy the aircraft aspects, or the way the civs looked in the modern era. The game play wasn't as fun.

In Civ 5, I still like the earlier game more, but I don't dislike the modern era as much.

I bet that the win % a higher difficulty levels is artificially low because a lot of people start to mod the game at some point while raising the level. And modding (I believe?) turns off achievements, rendering these stats rather inaccurate. What I would like to see is what % of players are playing modded games now, given how sorely the game needs it.

The Ottoman's special ability is horrific - I just won as Suleiman on Emperor/Small Continents, and never once captured a barbarian boat. Lots of water, and I had boats early enough, second city was a port. I met maybe three, sunk 1, the other 2 I think I killed or chased off via city bombardment. Both unique units were also useless as I wasn't at war that often and I happened to be at peace while they were useful. Ottomans aren't underrated, they're not very good. Note that I run with the Obsolete Promotions mod, so Jannisaries lose their special ability if upgraded.

There's nothing stating you do or do not know this, but you have to move your ship directly next to a barb ship to convert it to yours, and not attack it. I played small continents and had too many ships that I had to start gifting them away.

Well, you guessed right, I didn't know that! I figured I had to "kill 'em" first to get them to surrender. Anyway, there weren't that many around, and after a while I totally forgot I had that special ability. Does Bismarck work the same way? I haven't played him yet.

Playing mods prevents achievements. I'm sure that's a huge confound here.

Many people also tend to quit before completing games if they're bored. I only got the Deity achievement today, because I decided to not quit for once when I saw I was going to get the Diplomacy win. (I was going for culture :( )
