Let's be COMPLETELY HONEST. Do you get offended by or disapprove of any kind of stereotype? Isn't there some stereotypes about you that you find positive? For example, if you are Jewish, are you really offended when people assume you are some sort of successful businessmen. If you are Asian are you offended when people think that you are a freaking genius or master martial artist? If you are Swedish are you offended when people say your women have hot bodies? If you are black, are you offended when people assume you have rhythm or have a big penis? If you are Latin are you offended when people assume you are a good lover?

There are of course people who gets offended by anything, and those who don't get offended at all, but where do the majority of minorities stand on this?

I never get offended by stereo types or any kind of bigotted words or ideas. I never get offended period. The only racism I don't like is when it results in physical or economic harm. Other than that I think words and ideas not necessarily acted upon are not anything I should spend time worrying about. Although I'm a white, middle class, heterosexual atheist. So how could you possibly offend me?

Well, just look at my avatar. And that is not even supposed to be a "flattering" stereotype...

gah, so sick of any aussie stereotypes. I HATE YOU STEVE IRWIN!!!

but to be honest i've never taken offence at stereotyping done of any group i'm a part of - ie skips, or christian, or socialist or anything :)

I think offended would be strong a word. Mostly I get embarassed. i do find it strange that some stereotypes are more acceptable than others. For instance the stereotype of Southerners in the U.S. as racist, stupid and so on. This seems to go down well in American media, although I gather the majority of Southerners are perfectly normal and sensible people.

I think that it is funny when other countries try to impersonate us into a certain stereotype. Normally it's some bloke named Bruce with Raelene as a grilfriend driving a Holden.

I don't really care. The main one I encounter is the "stupid southern redneck blah blah." I just enjoy playing with peoples heads if thats what they expect me to be. ;)

I love being stereotyped :D

Being a northener living in the south of Norway, I am constantly stereotyped.. I feel a little sorry for people who believe in stereotypes. They seem ignorant to me.

btw, what are your stereotypes about germans?

 err... there is a certain fawlty towers episode that comes to mind about some German guests......
My own personell experience with Germans is that they are nice people. I would say that 90% of them that I have met are passionate personalities, very talkative.

Whaddya mean, mate? Crikies! Is Mr. Irwin not a typical Aussie bloke? ;)

I don't really get stereotyped. Well, unless you count people thinking I'm some sort of extra-friendly party guy who knows everything about music just because I have long hair. That gets annoying.

This had happened before quite a lot, and I'm not offended by it, only too annoying. Someone follows you and asks that all day long. Zzzzzzz......

It depends on the crcumstances. E.g. being half Polish, I hear many jokes at Polack expense when I'm in the States. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I make Irish jokes myself, same difference.

German stereotypes - some of these stereotypes actually aren't just stereotypes, they are true. These guys just love rules. And formalities. Herr Professor Doktor Doktor etc. My father worked in Germany for a few years, and I visit on business 3 or 4 times a year, so I have got to know a heap of Germans and have several close friends there (but they would call themselves Bavarian). So I can unbiasedly say that all the talk about Germans being sticklers for correctness and rule-following is spot on. But talking about all the idiosyncracies would require another thread.

People like Wesley Clark certainly are not helping remove these stereotypes.....:(

Most stereotypes are accurate so why bother. Why bother anyway, they will remain no matter what.

Wicked Smurf is right.

Stereotypes exist because they are generally true. There are exceptions, but I think a good chunk if not the majority is accurate.

I'm a white person with numerous different European ancestors.

I the normal person that everyone bases there stereotypes off of!

Scary isn't it?

Well, pretty much all of the ones about Romania are offensive. But, do feel free to find new ones ;)
